Note 1: When Marcus Aurelius was emperor, all his coins, including those struck for the Caesar Commodus, showed his own regnal dates. Commodus carried on the same dating sequence for his own coins minted at Alexandria. So even though Commodus was Augustus for only 15 years (including three years as co-ruler with Marcus Aurelius), it is possible to have a coin such as this one that shows a regnal year of 30 — it was struck in the 29th year since Marcus Aurelius became emperor in 161 CE. Note 2: Milne gives the bust description (of Selene) as "hair twisted on to crown of head" (which would be as seen on this tetradrachm of Claudius II Gothicus) but on this coin the hair appears not to be so twisted, and is constrained by a tainia. Although there is damage to the top of the flan, there is an undamaged area above the head where twists of hair would be seen if they existed. | |
