Dalla tabella si evince che le
caratteristiche fisiche della moneta di figura (6,72g, c. 25-26 mm), anche
tenuto conto dello stato di usura, non si discostano in maniera significativa
da quelle dei conî d'epoca.
(2) Basilio
II Bulgaroctono, imperatore d'ORIENTE (957-1025). - Successe al padre Romano
II nel 963, sotto la reggenza della madre Teofano e avendo a fianco coimperatori,
prima Niceforo Foca, secondo marito della madre, e poi (969) il generale
Giovanni Zimisce. Preso in mano il governo (a partire dal 10
gennaio 976), dopo aver consolidato il potere contro la nobiltà
feudale insofferente dell'autorità imperiale, attaccò (986)
i Bulgari. Sconfitto, riprese più tardi la guerra e il 29 luglio
1014 la concluse con una carneficina che gli valse il soprannome di massacratore
dei Bulgari (v. nota *) e l'ampliamento dei confini dell'Impero
fino all'Adriatico. Altri notevoli successi egli raggiunse ricacciando
gli Arabi da Aleppo, sottomettendo parte dell'Armenia e la Georgia. In
Italia domò la rivolta pugliese di Melo (1018) e fronteggiò
la spedizione di Enrico II. La morte (15 Dicembre
1025) gli impedì di intraprendere la riconquista della Sicilia
(gli elementi biografici sopra esposti sono tratti dal DEI- Diz. Enciclopedico
Italiano). Fu l'imperatore bizantino che regnò
più a lungo. Ebbe al suo fianco suo fratello Costantino VIII che

(3) Leggenda
+EMMA NOVHL in lettere greche, ovvero Emmanuel in lettere latine (da cui
Emanuele, nell'onomastica cristiana) ovvero Immanuel in ebraico, con il
significato di "Dio con noi". I Cristiani riconobbero, nel fanciullo vaticinato
da Isaia (VII, 14; VIII, 8) come salvatore di Israele, il Messia. Fu questa
la ragione per cui Emanuele divenne titolo e quasi un altro nome di Gesù.
La moneta è anonima
ma comunemente riferita "al tempo di Basilio II", perché in quell'epoca
ne furono battuti centinaia di milioni di esemplari (notizie tratte dal
sito, oggi non più attivo, http://www.suc.org/exhibitions/byz_coins/present/Basil_II.html).
(4) La
leggenda IC XC (lettere greche) va così interpretata:
I C, sono la prima
e l'ultima lettera della parola IESUS (in greco la "S" maiuscola si scrive
"C")
X C, sono la prima e l'ultima
lettera della parola Christus (in greco XPISTOC).
(5) + IhSuS
/ XRISTuS / bASILEu / bASILE che, translitterando in caratteri latini,
diventa "Iesus Cristus basileus basileon", ossia Gesù Cristo, re
dei Re. Guarda caso Basilio (in greco BASHLIOS) era anche il nome del sovrano
sotto il quale la moneta verosilmente fu battuta.
