La moneta di cui è allegata la foto del dritto e rovescio è stata rinvenuta personalmente in un fondo vicino Metaponto, ai piedi di Ferrandina per la precisione. Si tratta di un DENARIO C.Antestius Labeo - ANTESTIA (146 a.C.) di Roma Repubblicana.
Sul dritto: Testa di Roma a destra, con elmo attico alato. Dietro: C.ANTESTI. Davanti:X
sul rovescio: Dioscuri a cavallo verso destra con sotto un cane; esergo ROMA

Egregio Lettore,
C. Antestius, nel cui nome la moneta di figura fu battuta, firmò cinque varietà di denari, accomunati dalla presenza di un cagnolino (catulus in latino). Da ciò il Crawford avanza l'ipotesi che il cognomen del monetiere fosse proprio Catulus, quindi il suo nome per esteso sarebbe Catulus Ancestius. E' solo un'ipotesi perché il nostro monetiere è conosciuto solo attraverso le monete.

Descrizione sommaria (sono indicate in rosso le parti della leggenda usurate o comunque non più leggibili):
D. Testa elmata di Roma a destra, dietro monogramma 2 a salire, sotto il mento X3. Bordo perlinato.
R. Dioscuri a destra. Sotto, cane a destra, zampe anteriori sollevate. In esergo ROMA. Bordo lineare. 

La ricerca nel web delle monete di C. Antestius4 ha consentito di individuare, tra le cinque varietà elencate dal Crawford, solo tre che ho provveduto più avanti ad ordinare secondo il tipo. Nella varietà RIC 219 1b, il cagnolino è rappresentato dietro la testa di Roma nell'atto di muovere verso l'alto (la varietà RIC 219 1a, non disponibile nel web, differisce dalla precedente per il fatto che il cagnolino si muove invece verso il basso). Nelle varietà rimanenti il cagnolino avanza a destra, nel rovescio della moneta, sopra la linea d'esergo, ma mentre in RIC 219 1.c (non disponibile nel web) e in RIC 219 1.d l'animale ha la zampa anteriore sinistra sollevata, in RIC 219 1.e entrambe le zampe anteriori sono sollevate:

Concludo osservando che, per quanto consentito da un esame a distanza, dal confronto tra la moneta in esame e quelle autentiche del periodo non emergono differenze sostanziali. Il diametro del tondello di figura risulta un pò più piccolo del conio che l'ha battuto con il risultato che le teste dei Dioscuri risultano fuori bordo, il monogramma del monetiere è solo parzialmente leggibile mentre il segno del valore sul bordo della moneta è scarsamente leggibile. Alla luce di ciò ritengo che alla moneta in esame possa attribuirsi un valore venale attorno ai 60,00€.

La moneta del lettore (3,7g, 16,5-17,5 mm, 7,30h) presenta caratteristiche fisiche non dissimili da quelle delle monete autentiche del periodo.
(2) Il monogramma  sta per C. ANTESTIVS. L'associazione con Labeo non è provata secondo il Crawford.
(3) X è il segno del valore (1 denario = x assi).
(4) Oltre ai 5 denari sopra menzionati, l'emissione di C. ANTESTIVS comprende una serie completa in bronzo (asse, semisse, triente, quadrante e sestante).
