History: MARCVS VLPIVS TRAIANVS, born near Seville, Spain in 52 to Marcia and Marcus Ulpius Trajanus, pursued a military career and was appointed Governor of Germania Superior by Nerva in 97 shortly before being adopted by him. He became Augustus upon Nerva's death on January 25, 98. Although best known for adding Dacia to the Empire by a series of wars (101-106), he also built many public works and administrated ably. The Empire reached its maximum size in 117 after his Parthian victories (114-117). He died on August 8, 117, was deified, and buried in his monumental column in Rome. Condition: The coin is in VF condition with a somewhat rough, dark green patina and bronze highlights. There is a pit in the patina on Oct-14-00.

Concludo osservando che, per quanto consentito da una valutazione a distanza, le caratteristiche fisiche, generali e di stile della moneta di figura appaiono coerenti con quelle dei conî autentici del periodo. Il valore venale della moneta potrebbe aggirarsi sui 100,00€.

Note:
(1) Dupondio (bronzo). Che di tale nominale si tratti lo si deduce dalla testa radiata dell'imperatore. Riferisce BMC, che il dupondio di Traiano pesava 13,19 g. (media calcolata su 111 esemplari). Riassumo in tabella le caratteristiche fisiche dei dupondi della tipologia di figura reperiti in rete (v. link) e nel sito dell'ANS (American Numismatic Society):

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche della moneta di figura (10,6 g, 26mm, 7h) non si discostano in modo sostanziale da quelle dei conî d'epoca, pur con un peso del campione in esame al di sotto della media.
(2) La moneta può essere genericamente ascritta al periodo che inizia con il 5° consolato di Traiano (103 d.C.) e si conclude con l'inizio del 6° (111 d. C.). Il tema del trofeo allude chiaramente ad una vittoria militare (il trionfo sulla Dacia, celebrato nel 102 al termine della prima guerra o la vittoria definitiva nel 107 al termine della seconda?)
(3) Le leggende del dritto e del rovescio della moneta vanno lette unitamente: IMPeratori TRAIANO AVGusto GERmanico DACico Pontifici Maximo TRibunicia Potestate COSuli V Patri Patriae SPQR OPTIMO PRINCipi e quindi: il Senato e il Popolo di Roma [dedicano] all'Imperatore Traiano, Augusto, Germanico, Dacico, Pontefice Massimo, Console per la 5a volta, Padre della Patria, Principe Ottimo. Per il profilo biografico di Traiano si rimanda al portale dell'Enciclopedia Treccani consultabile in rete (v. link).
(4) Per il significato di aegis vedere la nota in altra pagina di questo sito. Quello sulla spalla sinistra di Traiano viene variamente interpretato come aegis (RIC 586 - v. link 4 ) o come leggero drappeggio (RIC 587 - v. link 5). In realtà la distinzione si presenta talora difficile (v. link 3, definito come aegis ma potrebbe intendersi invece come leggero drappeggio). Più netta sembrerebbe la distinzione tra le due numerazioni RIC se si prendono in considerazione solo gli scudi alla base del trofeo, scudo rotondo più scudo esagonale per RIC 286 e due scudi esagonali per RIC 287; ma anche qui ci sono fogge di scudi non facilmente classificabili come rotondi o esagonali (v. ad es. link 12).
(5) S. C. (Senatus Consulto, "per decreto del Senato") era la consueta sigla apposta sui nominali in bronzo romani (sesterzi, dupondi e assi) ad indicare la competenza esclusiva del Senato Romano nelle decisioni attinenti alle emissioni di quelle monete (la monetazione in oro e in argento, che non riporta quella sigla, rientrava invece nelle competenze dirette dell'imperatore).
