approfitto ancora della sua disponibilità per sottoporre alla sua attenzione questo quadrante di Claudio che mi lascia perplesso per la disposizione delle scritte al dritto, per le quali non sono riuscito a trovare alcun riscontro.

Venendo alle conclusioni, osservo che effettivamente la moneta presenta delle singolarità:
  • la più macroscopica è la disposizione delle lettere della leggenda (tanto al dritto, quanto al rovescio) rispetto al tema centrale (la mano ovvero le lettere SC);
  • il peso è un po' fuori norma;
  • il tipo del dritto (la mano con la bilancia) appare realizzato con stile rozzo e approssimativo;
  • altrettanto dicasi per le lettere della leggenda. 
Ciò nondimeno la moneta appare antica, verosimilmente potrebbe trattarsi di un'emissione non ufficiale realizzata da artisti non eccellenti.6

Il RIC indica per il quadrante un peso di 3,00÷3,50g e un asse di conio disposto indifferentemente ad ore 12 o 6. Da quanto premesso emerge che il peso della moneta del lettore (4,90g) è di c. un 20% al di sopra del valore più alto indicato in tabella.
(2) La classificazione non è del tutto certa poiché la moneta, per effetto dell'eccentricità, ha perso una parte significativa della leggenda del rovescio. Il RIC indica che nel periodo 41-42 la zecca di Roma batté tre quadranti con lo stesso tipo e leggenda del dritto ma con diversa leggenda del rovescio; e precisamente:

Propenderei a favore della classificazione RIC 85 per considerazioni di spazio nella distribuzione della leggenda, poi perché sembra di intravedere la lettera T e non la I prima di PON e infine perché, tra le tre possibilità, RIC85 è la meno rara.
(3) TIberius CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVGustus. La congiura del 41, che coinvolse senatori, cavalieri e il pretorio, portò alla morte di Caligola. L'imperatore, spinto dal desiderio di autoaffermazione assolutistica, si era reso responsabile di una finanza dissennata. Per far fronte a spese folli volte ad abbellire Roma (come l'impianto di flotte lacustri o il trasferimento dall'Egitto dell'obelisco vaticano, ecc.) era ricorso in modo estensivo a condanne seguite dalla confisca di beni all'insegna dell'arbitrio più evidente; in politica estera aveva tentennato avviando i preparativi logistici per l'invasione della Britannia senza procedere poi alla conquista. Furono i pretoriani ad assassinarlo e a decidere il nome del suo successore senza interpellare il Senato. Nessuno mise in discussione il fatto che la successione dovesse avvenire nell'ambito della continuità dinastica. In questo spirito fu scelto Claudio che del defunto imperatore era lo zio (si consulti in proposito l'albero genealogico della famiglia giulio-claudia in questo sito). La continuità imperiale era un punto di riferimento per l'esercito e un fattore di sicurezza per le province. Chi lo scelse doveva comunque aver riconosciuto in Claudio qualità e capacità che i contrari (sostanzialmente i senatori e i potenziali personaggi alternativi presenti nella corte imperiale) all'opposto disconoscevano, sia disprezzando i gusti letterari dell'imperatore (aveva scritto una Storia dell'Etruria e una storia di Cartagine, introdotto tre nuove lettere nell'alfabeto latino), sia sottolineandone la mancanza di esperienza. All'atto pratico Claudio, al momento di assumere il potere, pretese il rispetto per la casa imperiale e impose la punizione degli uccisori di Caligola, cercò una riconciliazione con i senatori senza tuttavia lasciar loro molto spazio. In politica estera creò una serie di nuove province, la Mauretania Cesarense (Algeria) e Tigitana (Marocco), la Licia, la Tracia, la Giudea, quindi portò a termine la conquista della Britannia ove sostò per sedici giorni tra la fine del 43 ed il 44. Promosse la colonizzazione nella Gallia, nelle province danubiane e in Italia trasferendovi i veterani. Concesse ai maggiorenti gallici lo "ius honorum" e di conseguenza aprì loro l'accesso al senato, estese la concessione della cittadinanza romana ai veterani non cittadini. Varò una riforma dell'amministrazione imperiale basata su quattro uffici, per le finanze, le suppliche, per l'istruzione delle cause demandate al principe, per la corrispondenza e li affidò alla gestione di quattro liberti molto capaci. Avviò opere pubbliche colossali come la costruzione del porto di Roma alla foce del Tevere nel 42 e il prosciugamento parziale del lago del Fucino nel 52. Con la centralizzazione burocratica sottrasse le province alle malversazioni dei luogotenenti repubblicani. Ebbe quattro mogli: dalle prime due divorziò, dalla terza, Messalina, abbe un figlio di nome Britannico e una figlia di nome Claudia Ottavia  Il matrimonio con Messalina si concluse con la morte di quest'ultima, giustiziata insieme all'amante per aver organizzato nel 48 una congiura contro Claudio; l'ultima moglie fu Agrippina Minore, figlia di un fratello (Germanico), divorziata a sua volta in quanto aveva sposato in prime nozze Gneo Domizio Enobarbo e gli aveva dato un figlio, Nerone. Su pressione di Agrippina, nel 50 Claudio adottò Nerone, gli diede in isposa la propria figlia ed infine lo riconobbe come erede al pari di Britannico. Nel 54 Agrippina, per assicurare la successione al proprio figlio, uccise il marito con un piatto di funghi avvelenati, quindi fece acclamare Nerone come imperatore dai pretoriani ponendo tutti dinanzi al fatto compiuto. Nel 55 Agrippina fece uccidere Britannico, eliminando così un pericoloso concorrente [Notizie tratte dalla "Guida alla storia romana" di Guido Clemente].

(6) Al tempo di Claudio, a causa dell'incapacità della zecca di Roma, di battere moneta nella quantità necessaria alle esigenze della circolazione, non era infrequente imbattersi in copie non originali della moneta, prodotte da zecche locali non autorizzate ma tollerate dalle autorità centrali.
