Le sottopongo questa moneta per saperne qualche cenno storico e la sua attuale quotazione. Qui di seguito i dati della moneta:

Diametro: cm 3
Colore: ottone come nella foto.
Tipologia della lega metallica: bronzo?
Sembra esserci se pur in piccolissima parte presenza di materiale ferro magnetico.
Non ho potuto verificare l’asse di conio.

Descrizione: sulla dritta si può notare un effige ed una scritta, TI CLAUDIUS CAESAR VGPMTRPIMT. Sulla rovescia, una sorta di soldato o comunque una figura umana e la scritta SPES AUGUSTA e le sigle SC a pedice.

Venendo alle conclusioni, osservo che per quanto è consentito di giudicare dall'immagine telematica a disposizione, la moneta presenta caratteristiche di stile e un aspetto generale accettabili; le anomalie di cui alla nota 1, invitano solo ad un approfondimento che solo un raffronto diretto tra il campione alla mano e quelli presenti nel web può consentire. A questo proposito faccio rilevare come il raffronto possa essere esteso a tutte le monete di cui al link di coinarchives e alle altre di cui al link http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/sear5/s1853.html.

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche del sesterzio comunicate dal lettore (23g, 30mm, 7h) evidenziano un peso nella norma, un diametro un po' bassino [su 42 monete della tipologia di figura presenti nel data base dell'ANS, il diametro minimo più basso riscontrato (32mm) ricorre una sola volta] e un asse di conio che si discosta di poco dalla norma. D'altra parte la tendenza generale in campo numismatico vuole che le monete antiche si valutino a peso. La leggera ferromagneticità del tondello potrebbe trovare spiegazione in un dato non statistico fornito da BMC I (pagina lvii) il quale informa che un sesterzio di Claudio, sottoposto ad analisi, presentava la seguente composizione, 76,85% di rame, 21,33% zinco, 1,62% ferro, 0,2 piombo.

(3) SPES AVGVSTA. La personificazione della Speranza (iconografia basata sul profilo - di solito a sinistra - della Kore arcaica o delle statue di "Persefone", come suggerisce il sito: http://etext.lib.virginia.edu/kinney/small/n3.htm), viene di solito rappresentata nella monetazione romana come leggiadra fanciulla che si muove a passo di danza recando un fiore e sollevando un lembo della veste. Riferisce BMC che la Spes fece il suo primo ingresso nella monetazione romana proprio con questa moneta di Claudio. Ciò potrebbe spiegarsi con il fatto che il giorno natale di Claudio è il primo di agosto nel quale si solevano tributare voti alla Spes. Ma il motivo principale sarebbe legato alla nascita del figlio ed erede di Claudio, poi detto Britannico, il 13 febbraio del 41 d.C. Sarebbe pertanto il primo apparire di un tipo dinastico poi ricorrente in tutte le serie imperiali.
