L. PLAVTIVS PLANCVS e la Medusa

Egr. Dott. sono in possesso di una moneta trovata intorno al 1965 zappando la terra, la moneta pesa 5 grammi, purtroppo pesata con una bilancia che ha come precisione 1grammo, quindi peserà realmente tra i 4,5 e i 5,4 grammi, di diametro compreso tra 26(MAX) e 25(MIN) mm di colore argenteo con zone più scure penso ossidate. L'asse di conio sembra ad ore zero, e il materiale visto il colore argenteo penso che sia argento. Vorrei sapere gentilmente l'anno di conio e il valore odierno sul mercato. Egregio Lettore,
mi sono già occupato di questo denario circa sei anni fa su mandato di un altro lettore. Riprendo l'argomento in considerazione dell'attuale disponibilità di un'immagine sufficientemente dettagliata della moneta. Di seguito trascrivo i dati significativi in mio possesso:

Denario1, zecca di Roma, 47 a. C.2, Crawford 453/1a (pag. 468), Sydenham 959 (pag. 160), indice di rarità "(3)".

Descrizione sommaria:
D. Testa di Medusa3 di fronte,  con serpenti attorcigliati su entrambi i lati. L PLAVTIVS. Bordo perlinato. 
R. Vittoria di fronte, sorregge con la mano sinistra un ramo di palma mentre conduce quattro cavalli. Sotto PLANCVS4. Bordo perlinato.

Die Rückseiten sind sehr selten so gut ausgeprägt wie auf unserem Exemplar.

Concludo osservando che mentre da un lato le caratteristiche fisiche della moneta di figura si discostano in modo significativo da quelle dei conî originali, risultando per altro straordinariamente simili a quelle del denario già oggetto di studio, dall'altro le lettere della leggenda appaiono realizzate in modo assai approssimativo. Ciò porta inesorabilmente alla conclusione che la moneta non sia autentica. Sarebbe interessante conoscere la composizione della lega nel tondello (materiale ferromagnetico?).

Dalla tabella si evince che le caratteristiche fisiche della moneta comunicate dal lettore (26 mm, 5,0±0,5g) non sono compatibili con quelle dei conî d'epoca. 
(2) Nell'anno in cui la moneta fu battuta, erano probabilmente triumviri monetali, con L. Plautius Plancus, anche A. Licinius Nerva e C. Restio. Si ricorderà che quello di monetiere o triumviro monetale (responsabile della zecca), era uno degli incarichi minori che potevano essere conferiti a giovani senatori al  termine del servizio militare e all'inizio di una carriera civile che, iniziata all'età di 20 anni per i più giovani, si sarebbe potuta sviluppare sino al consolato, attorno ai 35.
(3) Secondo Sydenham ed altri numismatici di tradizione più tarda del Craword, non di Medusa si tratterebbe, ma dell'Aurora alata che conduce i quattro cavalli del Sole.
(4) Il Crawford formula un'ipotesi suggestiva sulla tipologia del rovescio di questa moneta, basata su di un passo di Plinio il Vecchio (NH XXXV 108)5 che ricorda come il generale L. Munatius Plancus6, fratello di L. Plautius Plancus, in occasione del trionfo del 43 a.C., avesse dedicato in Campidoglio un quadro di Nicòmaco (pittore greco vissuto attorno alla metà del 4° secolo a. C.), nel quale era ritratta la "Vittoria che spinge una quadriga nel cielo". Di qui l'ipotesi che il monetiere, avesse tratto ispirazione proprio da questo quadro nel rappresentare la Vittoria sul rovescio della moneta e ciò in onore non già del fratello ma di Cesare verosimilmente. D'altro canto bisogna riconoscere che i tipi del dritto e del rovescio di figura erano comuni nelle gemme tardo - repubblicane.
(5) Plinio - "Naturalis Hystoria" - XXXV 108:
".. His adnumerari debet et Nicomachus, Aristidis filius ac discipulus. pinxit raptum Proserpinae, quae tabula fuit in Capitolio in Minervae delubro supra aediculam Iuventatis, et in eodem Capitolio, quam Plancus imperator posuerat, Victoria quadrigam in sublime rapiens" [.. a costoro si deve aggiungere anche Nicòmaco, figlio e discepolo di Aristide. Egli aveva dipinto un "ratto di Proserpina", conservato in Campidoglio nel tempio di Minerva, sopra l'edicola della Gioventù e una "Vittoria che trasporta in cielo una quadriga" appartenuta al generale Planco e da questi portata in Campidoglio].
(6) Il Generale L. Munatius Plancus fu in vita politico accorto che seppe attraversare indenne, restando sempre sulla cresta dell'onda, i massacri della guerra civile, appoggiandosi ora all'uno ora all'altro dei contendenti, tanto che di lui Velleio Patercolo aveva detto con bruciante battuta, "morbo proditor", "traditore per disposizione morbosa". Maestoso si erge sul Monte Orlando, l'alta collina boscosa che domina il golfo di Gaeta, il suo mausoleo, cilindro imponente, più largo che alto, senz'altro punto d'ingresso che una piccola porta in cima alla quale un'epigrafe reca l'orgoglioso messaggio con cui il defunto volle essere ricordato:
" L. Munatius L.F.L.N. Pron. Plancus Cos. Cens. Imp. iter. VIIvir epul. triump. ex Raetis, aedem Saturni fecit, de manibiis agros divisit in Italia Beneventi, in Gallias colonias deduxit Lugdunum et Rauticam." [Lucio Munazio Planco, figlio di Lucio, nipote di Lucio, pronipote di Lucio: Console, Censore, per due volte comandante militare, settemviro al banchetto degli dei; trionfò sui Reti; costruì col bottino di guerra il tempio di Saturno; divise tra i soldati le terre di Benevento in Italia; fondò in Gallia le colonie di Lugdunum (Lione) e Raurica (Basilea).]
