Reverse: Eagle standing right with open wings on a thunderbolt; monograms above, to right, and between legs, all within laurel wreath. Condition: Nice EF, Coin is much, much better than picture and very attractive. This coin has beautiful iridescent gray gold toned medium light silver metal with iridescent blue toning in some of the recesses. The artistic rendition of Perseus is excellent, especially his eyes and brow. See the enlarged picture of the obverse below. Excellent strike and decent relief obverse with coin 4.1 mm thick. Centering is about perfect on both sides. Only fault is some minor reverse die breaks which show up much more in the picture than in hand. Excellent example of Perseus. Valuation: Why Valuation? Compare this coin to a good VF sold by CNG Electronic Auction #9, Number 60089, for $852.50. The coin at auction has much less wear and better surfaces. Also compare with Triton II, lot 338 where a lesser EF with a slight flan edge flaw was estimated at $1000, and Triton III, lot 396 where a better EF was estimated at $1000. All in all, this is an extremely attractive coin of an uncommon Ruler with superb eye appeal. It is my personal opinion that both Lysimachos and Perseus, to a lesser extent, had a protruding brow. The die engraver would have had a much easier time engraving a flat forehead; why did he go to the extent as shown in this coin? If Perseus did not have such a protruding brow, and found it unattractive, I do not think the engraver would have engraved many more coins. Size: 15.54 grams, die axis=0.0, flan 4.1 mm thick, 33 mm in diameter. References: Mamroth Zfn 38 (1928), 19b; SNG Copenhagen 1269 variety; Sear 6804 variety.

L'abaissement pondéral interviendrait à partir de 171 avant J.-C. Après un début de règne prometteur, Persée entre en conflit avec les Romains. Pour financer la guerre, Persée dévalua le poids des espèces ce qui entraîna leur refonte. Ce type avec un poids attique réduit ou rhodien est postérieur à la réforme monétaire de 171 avant J.-C. History : Persée, le fils aîné de Philippe V (221-179 AC.), succéda à son père et fut le dernier roi de Macédoine. Après un début de règne prometteur, Persée entra en conflit avec les Romains, qui, depuis la bataille de Cynoscéphales en 197 avant J.-C., contrôlaient la Grèce. Le conflit avec les Macédoniens fut bref, mais violent. Les Romains envahirent la Macédoine et écrasèrent Persée à la double bataille de Pydna en 168 avant J.-C. Vaincu par Paul-Émile, Persée fut emmené à Rome avec ses deux fils, participa au Triomphe de son vainqueur et mourut deux ans plus tard captif en Italie (voir le denier de la gens Æmilia 10, frappé en 62 avant J.-C. et qui commémore cet événement).
