C·CASSI e la Libertas in quadriga

La ringrazio per il grande lavoro fatto, anche se purtroppo ha portato a definire la moneta come non originale. Come le avevo detto ho altre 2 monete, se ha la possibilità di identificarmele mi farebbe un grande favore; non sono ancora riuscito ad andare da un'orefice a pesarle con precisione me conto di farlo la prossima settimana. Le invio la prima. Sembra d'argento, il diametro è di 17,5 mm, l'asse di conio è a ore 6, non subisce l'influenza di magneti, il peso rilevato è di 3grammi(precisione della bilancia al grammo). D. Testa elmata di Roma a destra. Dietro, urna per votare4 e segno del valore, .5 Bordo perlinato.
R. Libertas in quadriga a destra sorregge le redini e la "vindicta" con la mano sinistra e il pileus con la destra6. Sotto C·CASSI7; in esergo ROMA. Bordo lineare.

Venendo allo specifico della moneta in esame, ancora una volta osservo che i dati forniti dal lettore sono insufficienti a determinare con certezza l'autenticità della moneta. Aggiungerò che le immagini sfocate che ho potuto esaminare inducono forti riserve sulla compatibilità dello stile e dell'aspetto generale della moneta con i conî d'epoca.

Il lettore dovrebbe verificare, attraverso una bilancia da 0,1g, se il peso della moneta di figura rientri nei margini di oscillazione individuati dalla tabella. Quanto al diametro, parametro per altro meno significativo, certamente è compatibile con i conî d'epoca.
(2) L'emissione monetale del 126 a. C. comprendeva, oltre alla moneta sopra descritta, le seguenti: (3) 119 - 110 a.C. è la datazione fornita dal Sydenham.
(4) La Libertas sul rovescio, in associazione con l'urna per votare sul dritto, alludono alla Lex Cassia tabellaria del 137, responsabile dell'introduzione del ballottaggio segreto in tutti i processi popolari con l'eccezione di quelli per alto tradimento ("perduellio").
(5) La X barrata era il segno del valore, 1 denario=16 assi unciali (l'asse unciale era una moneta bronzea che pesava 1/12 libbra, cioè 27,3 g).
(6) La "vindicta" era la verga con la quale, per ordine del pretore, si toccava lo schiavo che si voleva affrancare. Il pileo era il berretto a punta indossato dai liberti in segno della conquistata libertà. Sono tutte simbologie associate alla Libertas.
(7) C. CASSIus dovrebbe essere il figlio di C. Cassius Longinus, console nel 124.
