frustino con la destra, davanti un uccello. In esergo C.FABI C.F2.

This piece was minted circa 102 BC under the authority of the moneyer C.
Fabius C.f. Hadrianus. The obverse type depicts the veiled and turreted
head of Tyche facing right, with letter behind. The reverse type features
Victory in biga right, stork before, with legends C.FABI.C.F. in the exergue.
Coin shows a bit of reddish patina, but otherwise grades F/Near F, with
mostly clear devices and partial legends visible. A decent and affordable
example of the type, catalouged as Fabia 15. Currently $20.00 03/04/99.
Concludo osservando che la moneta
di figura ha l'aspetto e lo stile di un denario che però era una
moneta d'argento. Ne deriva che la moneta di figura è un falso (forse
d'epoca).

Dall'esame della tabella, mi pare
si possa concludere che il peso del denario di figura, così come
comunicato dal lettore (3,43 g, 19 mm, asse 2h), ancorché più
basso rispetto ai valori sopra tabulati, non si discosta eccessivamente
da quello dei denari d'epoca. Destano invece perplessità le tracce
di ossidazione presenti sulla superficie del tondello, che rivelano la
presenza nella lega metallica di rame.
(2) Riferisce
il Crawford che dovrebbe trattarsi di un C. Fabius Hadrianus, pretore nell'84.
L'uccello che appare sul rovescio assomiglia ad un fenicottero; si può
perciò identificare con uno dei due uccelli che i Romani chiamavano
"buteo". Dovrebbe trattarsi dell'uccello che si posò sulla nave
di un Fabius che, in seguito all'episodio, assunse il cognomen di Buteo.
Se è vero quanto sostiene L. R. Taylor che C. Fabius Hadrianus
è un Romano di prima generazione, si può ritenere che egli
si attribuisca un'affinità con i Fabii Buteones, all'epoca ormai
estinti, che non usavano il praenomen Caius. |
