Aelia Eudoxia was the wife of the Eastern Roman emperor Arcadius.

Her father was a Frankish chieftain and Roman consul in 385, named Bauto.

Her marriage on 27th April 395 to Arcadius to Eudoxia was arranged by Arcadius' corrupt minister, the eunuch Eutropius.

She came to resent being dominated by Eutropius, and in 399 helped bring about his downfall.

She was designated Augusta on 9th January 400, and dominated her ineffectual husband from then on.

Although a devote Christian, she quarreled with John Chrysostom, patriarch of Constantinople, and in 404 had him exiled.

On 6th October 404, she died from a miscarriage.

Arcadius and Eudoxia had four daughters and a son, who became the emperor Theodosius II. One of the daughters, Pulcheria, was regent for Theodosius II for several years.
