Comment: from Langtoft, East Yorkshire, Hoard.
This hoard was found on 24th September 2000, and in fact consisted of 2 hoards found a few metres apart. The 'A' hoard contained 976 base silver coins from Valerian I to Galerius and was originally in a black burnished ware jar. The 'B' hoard, from which the above coin came, contained 924 base silver coins of Constantine I and Licinius I and their families. See "Treasure Annual Report 2000"

CONSTANTINE II (Flavius Claudius Constantinus)

  • Flavius Claudius Constantinus was the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta and was born in 314.
  • Following Constantine's wars with Licinius, a treaty was signed at Serdica on 1st March 317. Constantine's sons Crispus and Flavius Claudius Constantinus (Constantine II) were proclaimed Caesars, as was Licinius junior.
  • In 328 he was sent to administer Gaul, where he distinguished himself against the Goths.
  • Constantine died on 22nd May 337, and his surviving sons, Constantine II, Constantius II and Constans succeeded him, each with the title Augustus (9th September 337).
  • Constantine II's share of the Empire included Britain, Gaul, and Spain.
  • Constantine had designs on his brother Constans's territory and in 340, invaded Italy.
  • The invasion was a fiasco, and Constantine's army was ambushed and he was killed near Aquileia.
