CLODIUS ALBINUS (Decimus Clodius Septimius Albinus)

• Clodius Albinus was born at Hadrumetum in Africa.
• He worked his way up in the army and at the death of Pertinax, he was governor of Britain.
• Septimius Severus, in order to keep the West quiet whilst he consolidated his position, offered Albinus the title of Caesar, which he accepted.
• In 195 when he Italy and the East were under his control, Severus had Albinus declared a public enemy.
• Albinus, having been saluted as Augustus by his troops, set out to fight Severus, but after some initial successes he was battle fought on February 19th, 197 AD near Lugdunum (Lyons).
• He then committed suicide and his body, together with those of his wife and children who were put to death, was thrown into the Rhone.
