Description: Library terracotta seal/bulla for papyrus scrolls.
Period: 1st - 2nd century AD
Size: 1.68g, 18mm
Comment: This seal comes from a large collection, all that remains of a library burned to the ground some 2000 years ago. Thousands of papyrus scrolls were tucked away in nooks lining the walls of this library, each papyrus sealed with a blob of clay, marked with the seal of the owner's signet ring. The intense heat burned the papyri, leaving behind the scorched seals.
