Roman Empire, Julian II, AE3, Constantinople391 viewsClosest match is RIC 160. This coin is now published on both Wildwinds.com and the dirtyoldcoins website. This coin is "barely" published as the other example had the exergue broken off of it and the mint was assumed Cyzicus..until now...as my coins shows...it is Constantinople.

APIS, holy bull of Memphis/Egypt, herald of god Ptah, making oracles in the name of the god. Each new bull should have a white triangle on the forehead or a moon-like spot at the sides. After his death buried as Osiris-Apis, from which the Serapis cult developed. Julian II has renewed this cult. For a new interpretation of the bull see the remarks in 'Jochen's Folles' to Julian II RIC VIII, 163! Jochen

GREEK, Pamphylia, Aspendos stater with Ba'al countermark388 viewsThis BOT entry asks you to consider more than the usual question of coin grade. To match or exceed this 'type' I ask you consider not just the coin but the countermark and its placement. The countermark should have a better strike of the bull and, especially, better clarity of the LUY legend (Aramaic for Ba'al read right to left). Further, I'll expect the flat mark on the opposite side to do less damage to that design than this one. My example suffers from the dotted border falling across the middle of the bull so there is a lot of room for improvement here. Each voter can deside if the off centered reverse is a fault or a benefit since it makes room for the countermark.
This BOT entry is to demonstrate that there are many factors to consider when 'grading an ancient coin. dougsmit

Italy, Rome, Arch of Titus371 viewsThe Arch of Titus, on the Via Sacra, Rome, just to the south-east of the Roman Forum, was completed by Domitian in 96 A.D. to commemorate Titus' victories, including the Siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. The Arch of Titus has provided the general model for many of the triumphal arches erected since the 16th century—perhaps most famously it is the inspiration for the 1806 Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France, completed in 1836.J. Ancient even for the Romans. Italian or Etruscan origin for this goddess and directly identified with the Greek Athena. Shown here wearing a Corinthian helmet. Although a war goddess, she is also the patron of wisdom and handicrafts. This latter is probably what made her attractive to Claudius who reportedly authored several histories, none of which, unfortunately, have survived.

Apollo, naked, laureate, with crossed legs, stg. r., r. hand raised behind holding arrow, l. hand resting on tree before him; at the tree a lizard, touching Apollo

Rare, only one spec. in AMNG ex coll. Löbbecke
From Pliny the Elder we know the detailed description of a famous bronze sculpture of Praxiteles (4th century BC) named Sauroktonos, the Lizard-killer. The original sculpture is lost. We have two Roman marble copies in the Louvre and in the Musei Vaticani in Rome. May be the coin is the pic of Pliny's description or may be not. But the reverse shows clearly the two sides of Apollo: Here the youthful smiling bringer of light and in the same moment the merciless killer for fun.Jochen

To me the portrait on this coin is like a window to his personality and character. His gaze seems to mirror what is written about his life and the way he ruled.

Italy, Rome, Pantheon inside367 viewsInterior view of Hadrian's dome and ocular center. An engeneering masterpiece, the concrete gets thinner as it rises. The open ocular in the center allows light to flood into this massive ancient space. The walls at the bottom are about 12 feet thick. The interior is completely ancient from the marble floors to the walls and dome. Origianlly dedicated to all the god's it is now a Catholic church.Jay GT4
