Uncertain mint in (Kabul or Ohind?). 19mm, 2.98 grams. Tye #21. SKU 42564

Samanta Deva just meant "The Feudatory Chief" - it was the title assumed by the Kabul Shahi and their Islamic successors, and was probably not a personal name. Hundreds of types of jitals inscribed "Samanta Deva" (in imitation of this type) were struck by numerous dynasties in the later period. The Kabul Shahi dynasties also called Shahiya ruled the Kabul Valley (in eastern Afghanistan) and the old province of Gandhara (northern Pakistan) during the Classical Period of India, from the decline of the Kushan Empire in the 3rd century to the early 9th century. They are split into two eras the Buddhist-Shahis and the later Hindu-Shahis with the change-over occurring around 870. These coins are of full size and weight, but were probably not minted by Samanta Deva but can be considered anonymous issues of his successors

Philip Jr, Antioch billion tetradrachm. 244-249, 11.9 grams, 26.3 mm186 viewsMarcus Julius Philippus Severus, also known as Philippus II, Philip II and Philip the Younger (237–249) was the son and heir of the Roman Emperor Philip the Arab by his wife Roman Empress Marcia Otacilia Severa. According to numismatic evidence, he had a sister called Julia Severa or Severina, whom the extant literary sources do not mention.

When his father became emperor in 244 he was appointed Caesar. In 247 he became consul, and later elevated by his father to the rank of Augustus and co-ruler.

His father was killed in battle by his successor Decius in 249. When news of this death reached Rome, he was murdered by the Praetorian Guard. He died in his mother's arms, aged eleven years.

Very rare! Late silver obol, trident type with "Sri YaShaaDiTya", Hephthalites, 6th-7th century AD182 viewsCrowned bust right, no inscriptions / Trident with curved prongs, five Brahmi characters "Sri YaShaaDiTya" around, beginning at 12 o'clock. 12mm, 0.7 grams. Unpublished.

In 2003 or 2004 a small hoard of small silver coins was unearthed in (reportedly) Northern Pakistan. The hoard was dispersed between a number of dealers, and I was lucky enough to get the bulk (reportedly) of the hoard. These fascinating little silver coins were originally sold as "Hephthalite" coins, as per attribution of the Pakistani dealers, but they are completely unpublished in any catalogue and were completely unknown until this find.

Mr.Wilfried Pieper, to whom I am indebted for bringing these coins to my attention, examined a group of 42 pieces and published 15 distinguishable types in a wonderful article in the Journal of the Oriental Numismatic Society - 'New types of early medieval silver portrait coins from northern Pakistan' in ONS-NL 181 (2004).

Comments Zinat al-Din Kamalat Shah, born as Putri Raja Setia, was the great-granddaughter of Sultan Mukmin who ruled in the late 16th century. Her brother was married to her predecessor, Sultana Zaquiyat.

The 1886 Elliot description of his 189-192 Viraraya fanams as obv:(?): Transverse bar, sometimes with the end turned up, or simply elongated like a crocodile or saurin above three lines of dots and a reverse design not explained. He says The many varieties of gold fanams, through no longer current are found in considerable numbers, many of them having curious devices, without legends.

Note that this example is probably much more recent than the original Hoysalas fanam illustrated in Mitchiner. The animal figures are more stylistic. The angle between two sets of dots on the obverse in this example is much less than 90 degrees while it is more than that in the Hoysalas fanam. The two groups of dots in the obverse merge in the Viraraya fanam, to 2 arcs, each of 6 dots.

According to Elliot (page 148), small coins were measured or counted by means of a chakram board, a small square wooden plate with a given number of holes the exact size and depth of a chakram. A small handful of coins is thrown on the board, which is then shaken gently from side to side so as to cause a single chakram to fall into each cavity, and the surplus, if any swept off with the hand. A glance at the board, when filled, shows that it contains the exact number of coins for which it was intended. The rapid manipulation of this simple but ingenious implement requires some practice, but the Government clerks and native merchants are exceedingly expert and exact in its performance.

King Kanishka coinage bears eloquent testimony to his zeal for Buddhism. Lord Shiva and bull, Nandi were commonly portrayed on his gold and copper coins, but the most important numismatic contribution of him is as follows: he was the first ruler (and perhaps only one in ancient world) who minted coins with image of Buddha. The coins depicting Buddha are extremely rare. There exist only 5 gold coins (2 dinars and 3 quarter dinars) in the world having portrait of Buddha. There are some copper coins which show Buddha which are also rare. All these coins have been minted by Kanishka, most likely to commemorate building of great stupa of Purushpur (modern Peshawar, in Pakistan).

The Maurya Empire (322–185 BC), ruled by the Mauryan dynasty, was the largest and most powerful political and military empire of ancient India.

Originating from the kingdom of Magadha in the Indo-Gangetic plains (modern Bihar and Bengal) in the eastern side of the sub-continent, the empire had its capital city at Pataliputra (near modern Patna). The Empire was founded in 322 BC by Chandragupta Maurya, who had overthrown the Nanda Dynasty and began rapidly expanding his power westwards across central and western India taking opportunistic advantage of the disruptions of local powers in the wake of the withdrawal westward by Alexander the Great's Macedonian and Persian armies. By 316 BC the empire had fully occupied Northwestern India, defeating the satraps left by Alexander.

RR!! Last coins of the Hindus in Multan before the Islamic conquest - EXCEPTIONAL quality silver drachm, SRI PARAKUTA type, Chach of Alor dynasty in Sindh and Multan, ca.632-711 AD115 viewsStylized head right within a dotted border, Brahmi letter "Pra" on the forehead / Stylized Sassanian altar with the shaft replaced with three dots, stylized Brahmi letter "Sri" above, four characters "At-Pa/Ku-Ra" (probably should be read counterclockwise from "Sri", giving an inscription "Sri PaRaKuTa"). 13mm, 0.70 grams, Multan mint. Mitchiner ACW 4905-4909; Mitchiner NIS 269-276.

These coins are fairly common, but ALWAYS appear in a very poor state of preservation. Because of this, these coins were misdescribed both times they appeared in publications - Mitchiner described them as "Guptas from north of Malwa" (and this is the most common attribution for these coins used). In a mongoraph published about these coins LC Gupta and SJ Mangalam attributed them to Sri Gupta, the first Gupta ruler. Both attributions are certainly wrong, since these coins are found in eastern Sindh, and not in Malwa.

The misattributions took place because of the poor state of preservation of the available specimens - no coins with a full inscription were known until a small hoard of high quality coins (including this piece) was recently discovered. I am currently writing an article about these for the Journal of Oriental Numismatic Society, it should be published by the end of the summer.

113 viewsHistory of Thessalian League
The Thessalian League/confederacy was made up of several cities in the Thessalian valley in Northern Greece. This area was completely surrounded by mountains and isolated except for a few passes. It was one of the few areas of Greece self-sufficient in grain and produced livestock and horses. Thessaly had the best calvary in Greece. The league was frequently weakened by intercity rivalries and lost its strength in the 5th century BC. The league was re-established in 374 BC by the tyrant Jason. He was assassinated in 370 BC, when it became evident that he had plans of conquest against the rest of Greece. After the death of Jason, there was infighting in the league and some of the cities requested help from Philip II of Macedon to settle the rivalries, which he accomplished in 353 BC. A few years later (344 BC), Philip II simply took control of the entire area. Thessaly remained under Macedonian control until Macedonia was defeated by the Romans in 197 BC. A new league was established in 196 BC. The league continued until 146 BC, then became part of the Roman province of Macedonia.

Bronze_stater_of_King_Harsha_(1089-1101_AD),_Kashmir,_North_India.jpg
Bronze stater of King Harsha (1089-1101 AD), Kashmir, North India99 viewsEnthroned Ardoxsho facing; Nagari legend: "Harsha Raja" / King standing, Nagari legend "Deva". 19mm, 5.5 grams. Very attractive. Mitchiner NIS 188-189.

These remarkable and attractive coins are the descendants of the gold and silver Kushan staters, and have a distinction of being the longest-minted issue in history - the Goddess/King design remained virtually unchanged in the 1300+ years history of this issue.

From 1089 to 1101 A. D., King Harsha ruled Kashmir. Versed in many languages, a good poet, lover of music and art, he started his rule in a remarkable way, and became famous in northern India. His court was a centre of luxury and splendour. He introduced new fashions in dress and ornaments. His ministers were gorgeously dressed, wore earrings and head dresses, previously reserved for the members of ruling families only. But strangely enough, Harsha's career became a record of follies and misdeeds. The people also suffered from famine, and plague as well, and a considerable section of people became victims of these calamities. A confusion followed these misfortunes, leading to a general rising of the people under two royal princes Uccalia and Succalla. Harsha along with his son Bhoja were murdered, and the Kashmir throne passed into the hands of two princes respectively. Both the princes met the fate of Harsha and when our great historian Kalhan completed his 'Rajatarangini' in 1149 - 50 King Jaisimha, the last great ruler of the Hindu times was ruling the state.

SC 2109.5a; Newell, Tyre 121; HGC 9, 1074.

Antiochos VII was called Sidetes because he was reared in the Pamphylian
seaport of side. He was the younger son of Demetrios I. his elder brother Demetrius II was captured by the Parthians. He undertook the reconquest of
Palestine, he besieged and captured Jerusalem. ( 134 BC).
Ultimately the ruling high priest John Hyrcanus accepted seleucid suzerainty,
though retaining autonomy with respect to internal affairs.
Antiochos temporarily recovered Babylonia from the Parthians, but while
wintering in Media he was caught off guard by a native revolt coordinated
with an attack by the Parthian army. He was vanquished and killed by
Phraates II. His body was returned to antioch in a silver casket, but his son Seleucus was kept as a hostage at the Parthian court.
These events marked the permanent loss of the eastern Seleucid empire.

Extremely rare! Gold 1/2 fanam (1/4 rupee in gold), Shah Alam II (1759-1806) as "Shahi Gohar Alam", mintless type, Mughal Empire95 viewsExtremely rare! Gold 1/2 fanam (1/4 rupee in gold), Shah Alam II (1759-1806) as "Shahi Gohar Alam", mintless type, Mughal Empire

Notes: Persian inscription divided with a line: Shah Gohari / Alam * and date ((11)83=1768 AD) / Blank. Mintless type. 7mm, 0.18 grams. Herrli "Gold Fanams" - (listed for a fanam as #8.08.05, mentioned as existing for 1/2 fanam but not illustrated (same die as this half fanam?)).

"Gohar Shah" was the title Shah Alam II used as a Prince (also, the Marathas sometimes struck coins giving this name to Shah Alam II). Herrli could not find an example with a readable word in the second line ("Alam") and reported it as "unread text" - this word is very clear on this coin, completing the reading of the inscriptions on this type.

Gold fanams (weighing 0.36 grams and equal to 1/32nd of a mohur or 1/2 rupee in gold) in the name of various Mughal Emperors are perhaps the most obscure Mughal coins, poorly studied and mostly unlisted in various catalogues. They were issued in various mints, but are often difficult to attribute because of the mint is not readable or absent. This difficulty in attribution is evident from the fact that these coins were attributed to different States, dynasties, people and governors by various scholars.

Half-fanams (weighing about 0.17-0.18 grams and equal to 1/64th mohur or 1/4 rupee in gold) are much more rare and more obscure than the whole fanams. They are unpublished in all catalogues, but were recently mentioned by Herrli in "Gold fanams" for the first time, though not illustrated. These 1/2 fanams were struck from the same dies as the whole fanams, but are much scarcer and extremely difficult to find.
