Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow put more into the treasury than all the others. For all of them have contributed out of their abundance; but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."

This may have been the famous V Alaudae ('the larks'), a Caesarean legion which remained loyal to Antony but was later retained by Augustus. There are other possibilities, however: V Macedonica, a Caesarean legion about which little is known; V Urbana, disbanded after Actium (and therefore quite likely an Antonian legion); and V Gallica, a Caesarean legion that was probably the one that under Lollius lost its eagle to German raiders in Gaul in 17 BC.

This legion was recruited in 52 BCE by Julius Caesar in Gallia Cisalpina, and saw its first action during the campaign against the Gallic leader Vercingetorix, who was besieged at Alesia.

AR silver Legionary Denarius. 32-31 BC. 18mm, 3.6g.

An extremely odd and interesting specimen, apparently either overstruck due to an error, struck on clashed dies, or partially double-struck. The III VIR RPC part is laid overtop of the left hand side of the ship itself, rather than below the galley as usual. The lettering is the overtype, or the doublt-struck part, since it cuts into the galley underneath.

Gordian III, 29 July 238 - 25 February 244 A.D., Ancient Counterfeit72 viewsFouree plated denarius, ancient forgery cf. RIC 53, S 8620 (Rome mint, 239 A.D.), aF, illegal, 4.261g, 23.5mm, 165o, 239 - c. 244 A.D.; obverse IMP CAES GORDIANVS PIVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust seen from behind; reverse LIBERALITAS AVG II, Liberalitas standing front, head left, holding an abacus and and cornucopia;

Gordian III was the grandson of Gordian I and nephew of Gordian II. He was proclaimed Caesar shortly before the murder of Balbinus and Pupienus, and he succeeded them. Little is known about his reign. In 242 A.D. he embarked on a campaign against the Persian Kingdom which was so successful the Persians had to evacuate Mesopotamia. However, Gordian III died shortly after, through illness or the machinations of his Praetorian prefect and successor, Philip I.
