Germaincus by Gaius SIGNIS RECEPT DEVICTIS GERM RIC 57.jpg
Germanicus by Gaius SIGNIS RECEPT DEVICTIS GERM RIC 57455 viewsDupondius, 30mm, 14.17g.

Obverse: GERMANICVS/CAESAR in two lines across field, Germanicus, bare-headed and cloaked, in slow quadriga, R. Eagle-tipped sceptre in L hand.

Reverse: SIGNIS - RECEPT/DEVICTIS - GERM/S - C in three lines to L and R of Germanicus, bareheaded and cuirassed, standing L, R hand raised, L holding eagle-tipped sceptre.

Struck under Gaius in honour of his father, 37-41.

Rome, RIC 57, Common.

The coin is badly struck rather than heavily worn. Issued to commemorate Germanicus' capture of the standards lost in the Teutoberg Forest in 9AD. He had been awarded the ornamenta triumphalia by Augustus, the trappings of a triumph without the thing itself; the full triumph was finally awarded by Tiberius in Ad15, but not actually celebrated until Germanicus returned to Rome in 17, after a successful campaign. Although RIC does not say so, I assume the figure of Germanicus in a quadriga commemorates the triumph.

Blundered inscription recogniseable as:

BASILEWS BASILEWN/ARSAKOU/EUERGETOU DIKAIOU/EPIFANOUS FILELLHNOS

The letters of the inscription are only about 1mm high, which may well explain the minor blundering; some Parthian celators, especially under the later rulers, were clearly illiterate in Greek, and substituted patterns for writing, but the meaning of this one is apparent.

Orodes II was the king who destroyed Crassus and his army at Carrhae in 53 BC.

VIRTVS AVG, RIC 699139 viewsAnt, GALLIENVS AVG, Radiate and Cuirassed R; VIRTVS AVG, Virtus standing R holding spear and shield. Antioch, RIC 699, Common.

I wish I had a 'before' pic of this one; it came covered in green tarlike patina which concealed most of the detail, apart from the odd bit of bare metal sticking out. I could just about tell it was Gallienus and that was all. Now, OK, you can tell its been stripped, but at least it has good detail.

Treasury of Jewish Coins 40.

There are two interesting things about these coins. Firstly, the flans were cast in double-sided moulds, giving a rather odd appearance. Secondly, the Hebrew inscription is retrograde. Meshorer says that signatures were sometimes reversed in the ancient world, and thus the inscription may have this character.

This is evidently an engraver's error, as Postumus was COS II in 260-1, when he was TRP I, and this is as stated on the common dated coin of this year. I have two of these, from different dies, so evidently the mistake was repeated.
