Israel, Jericho - Herod's Palace210 viewsThe ruins at Tulul Abu el-Alaiq, site of Herod the Great’s winter retreat on the outskirts of Jericho. Jericho is over 300m below sea level and hence pleasantly warm in winter, even when it's freezing in Jerusalem. Around 35 BCE, Aristobulus, the last Hasmonaean high-priest and Herod’s brother-in-law, was murdered here on Herod’s orders, drowned in a fish pond. The palace and grounds extended across the Wadi Qilt (the seasonal river-bed in the foreground of the picture), which was spanned by a bridge. Abu Galyon

Buckles - 4th century AD - Late Roman210 viewsTwo buckles circa 4th century AD.

The upper example, with its small, odd-shaped hinged plate is likely late 4th century.
It is known as Soupault, type 1, variant I2a and is found in Eastern Europe.

The lower example, with its square hinged plate, dates from the mid- to late-4th century AD.
It is known as Soupault type Ib with plate type 1, variant I2aI.
Example #1 in Soupault was found in Callatis, Romania.
Though mostly found in Eastern Europe and example is known from Winchester (Roman Military Equipment, 1st edition, figure 137, #4).
Also Carnuntum AD 313, # 390.

Despite use by barbarian soldiers both are considered Roman types.

Phillipi AE 15 Commemorative210 viewsThis coin was struck at the Roman colony of Philippi, near the site of the battle. The colony was formed by troops from both sides who settled there after the conflict. The coins picture winged Victory on one side and three Praetorian Standards on the other. The bronze coin is approximately 18-19mm in diameter. It is a bit unclear when the coin was struck. Some attribute it to Augustus, who won the battle and ruled Rome from 29BC to 14AD. Others feel it was issued by Claudius in 42AD to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the battle and to honor the Praetorian Guards of his time, who helped assure his ascension as Emperor. Either way it is a fascinating and important ancient Roman commemorative coin.

RIC 651A Domitian210 viewsAR Denarius, 3.49g
Rome mint, 88-89 AD
Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VIII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: IMP XV COS XIIII CENS P P P; Minerva stg. l., with thunderbolt and spear; shield at her l. side (M3)
RIC 651A (R2). BMC -. RSC -. BNC -.
Acquired from Sondermann Numismatics, June 2014.

During 88-89 Domitian's imperial salutations were coming fast and furious due to wars being fought against both the Chatti and the Dacians. As a result, the honours piled up rather quickly. The different issues during the time period are divided up by imperial acclamations. Some issues are rather small, depending how long it was before word reached the mint of a new salutation. It was previously thought when Domitian became TR P VIII in mid September he was at IMP XVI, however, with this new denarius we now know he was still IMP XV. This realisation bumps the number of issues for 88-89 from 6 to 7, this coin being part of the new first issue now dated TR P VIII IMP XV. The issue had to be quite minuscule (T.V. Buttrey joked perhaps struck for only 30 minutes until news of IMP XVI arrived), only this one Minerva type has surfaced, doubtless the other three standard Minerva types were struck alongside but have yet to be recorded. Forvm member tacrolimus reported an example of the type in 2009, a die pair match with my coin. T.V. Buttrey has assigned this coin 651A in the upcoming RIC II.1 addenda.

The coin isn't only rare but also struck in a very fine Flavian baroque style, in good metal and well centered. Even if it was common it would be outstanding.

Rome mint, 76-77 AD
Obv: CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: COS IIII; Pegasus, standing r.
RIC 921 (C2). BMC 193. RSC 47. BNC 169.
Acquired from Nilus Coins, March 2007.

The reverse copies an Augustan one and might possibly allude to Domitian's foray into poetry. (BMCRE xl)

Unlike most of the crude Domitian portraits of the time from the Rome mint, this one has a great beauty and nobility to it that few of his contemporary denarii strive to achieve. Was it a minor slight that most of the better die engravers were used for Vespasian and Titus' coins? Thankfully one slipped through to create a wonderful portrait of the young caesar.

Despite some minor flaws, this is a wonderful coin that I'm happy to add to my collection.

Struck in Kremnitz (formerly Kormocbanya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Hans Thurzo, kammergraf, ca. 1498-1503 (per Unger) or ca. 1500-1502 (per Huszar and Pohl).

Huszar/Pohl rarity rating 3. Subtype B coins are those in which the letter “A” is a stylized Renaissance letter without an interior bar and a bar at the apex of the letter. It is not depicted in any of the references, although the coin described and depicted in Huszár portrays one letter “A” in this manner. It is the less common of the two subtypes of the emission.

This privy mark was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Paul Peck, kammergraf (per Pohl).

The type was struck in only in 1383 (per Huszár, Unger and Frynas) or from 1383 through 1385 (per Pohl). It is traditionally viewed as the second of three denarii struck by Maria (after Huszár 565 and before Huszár 569). More recently, it has been viewed as Maria's third type (per Gyöngyössi and Toma), struck in 1386-1387, ending when Sigismund's coinage began (per Gyöngyössi). This coin, with lilies in both reverse fields, was struck in Kassa/Kaschau, now Košice, Slovakia (per Pohl).

Toma notes twelve legend variations among 456 coins of this type in the Cluj-Mănăştur Hoard, found in Cluj-Napoca, Romania (formerly, Kolozsvár, Hungary), in 1934 (but lists only eleven). They differ mainly in terms of completeness of legends, presence of pellets, and the styles of the letter A. Toma lists eight variations among 93 coins struck in Kassa with two lilies (Pohl 112-2). The legends on this coin are as per Toma 1. Toma notes 36 coins with this combination.

Toma further notes three versions of the patriarchal cross and eight versions of the crowned M. There are fourteen obverse/reverse design combinations appearing among 411 coins from the hoard, of which only the B/c combination is listed by Toma as being among 79 Kassa issues with two lilies (Pohl 112-2). This coin appears to bear that B/c combination.

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 5; Frynas rarity C. The legend combination appearing on this coin is depicted/described in Unger, Réthy and Frynas. The legend combination depicted/described in Huszár and Pohl differs in that there are small pellets between words on both the obverse and reverse.

Minted at Trier, 323-4 AD
This coin alludes to the Sarmatian war and the victories of Constantine in the year of Christ 322. According to Zosimus, that great emperor drove back the routed Sarmatae beyond the Danube, and they pursued them to a place where they had rallied for the purpose of renewing the fight. He there again defeated and put them to flight, taking a great number of them prisoners, whom he doomed to captivity, and their King, Rausimodus being left among the slain.

Vitellius was member of the XVviri sacris faciundis. This collegium of priests was responsible for the interpretation of the Sibyllinic Books. They were bought by Tarquinius Priscus and contained instructions for religious procedures. Augustus brought them into the temple of Apollo 12 BC for there were connections to Apollo. AD 408 they were destroyed by Stilicho.

Tripod and dolphin were the symbols of the XVviri. The raven is a symbol of the prodigies.

The type was struck 1471-1481 (per Huszár & Unger) or 1472-1478 (per Pohl), with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g. This privy mark was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Veit Mülstein, oberkammergraf (per Pohl).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4. This is a variable type with two subtypes. Subtype B is the less common, comprising around 20% of the coins of the emission. This privy mark appears on coins of both subtypes and on around 15% of the coins of this type.

In Subtype B coins, the obverse legend is + M • MAThIE • R • VnGARIE (or a minor variant). They are neither described nor depicted in any of the catalogs.

In 197, Septimius Severus returned to Rome and executed about 30 of Albinus' supporters in the Senate. After his victory he declared himself the adopted son of the late Marcus Aurelius. This type refers to games held to celebrate the victory over Albinus before departing on his second Parthian campaign. They are mentioned by the vita Severi: "He then set out for the Parthian war, after holding gladiatorial games and distributing a largesse to the people."
