Historical background;
Hieron II was tyrant and then king of Syracuse, c. 270 to 215 B.C. His rule brought 50 years of peace and prosperity, and Syracuse became one of the most renowned capitols of antiquity. He enlarged the theater and built an immense altar. The literary figure Theocritus and the philosipher Archimedes lived under his rule. After struggling against the Mamertini, he eventually allied with Rome.Steve E

The construction of this temple dedicated to Roma and Augustus was started after the visit of the latter to the city in 29 BC. In 121 AD the city was destroyed by an earthquake so the image on the reverse is possibly that of the temple reconstructed under Hadrian who visited Nicomedia in 123 or 124 AD.

RIC 331 (R2). BMC 82. RSC 181. BNC 84.
Ex Roma Auction V, 23 March 2013, lot 728.
In either 82 or 83 AD Domitian conducted a census of Gaul as a smoke screen in order to make preparations to invade the Germanic Chatti lands across the Rhine. Not much is known of what the actual war consisted of - perhaps some road building, punitive raids against Chatti strongholds, and some minor skirmishes. No large battles, a la Mons Graupius, have come down to us, prompting Tacitus' assertion, 'that in recent times, the Germans were more triumphed over than conquered'. Even the date of the conflict is in dispute - although Domitian did rack up four salutations between June 83 and September 84, several of which must be attributed to the Chattan Campaign.
Domitian celebrated a triumph over the Chatti in 83, after which he claimed the title 'Germanicus'. This rare denarius from 85 is a record of the war and triumph over the defeated German tribe. The coin is part of the last series of denarii minted with the recently increased silver fineness before the lesser Neronian standard was restored. During this period particular attention was paid by the die engravers to Domitian's portrait, evidenced here by the aegis and fine style. The Germania Capta reverse has become an iconic Flavian type, along with Vespasian and Titus' Judaea Capta types, despite the 'hollow' triumph it records.
A most wonderful coin in hand!David Atherton

A coin issued either to commemorate Titus' Judean victory in 70 or a contemporary Agricolan victory in northern Britain, possibly in connection with Titus' 15th imperial acclamation upon reaching the Tay river. I believe it to be a Judaea Capta commemorative. Titus's bronze coinage overtly advertises the Judean victory with no hint of a British one. It would be odd if the propaganda messages on the precious metal coinage diverged so significantly from the bronze!
Another scarcer reverse type that can be quite expensive.David Atherton

Rev: PATROn – VnGARIE, Veiled Madonna with infant Jesus to her right, B–trident (privy mark) in fields.
The type was struck 1468-1470 (per Unger), 1468-1481 (per Huszár) or 1468-1484 (per Pohl) with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g. Those with this privy mark were struck in Buda (now Budapest) by Stephen Kowách in 1469 (per Pohl).
Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 3. It is a highly variable type with four Subtypes. Subtype C is one of the least common, comprising around 10% of the coins in the emission. This is an uncommon privy mark, appearing only on this subtype and on only around 1% of the coins of this type.
Subtype C coins lack a cross at the beginning of the obverse legend, which is M • MAThIE • R • hVnGARIE • (or a minor variant), have an escutcheon, and are without a ring in the raven's beak. They are neither described nor depicted in any of the catalogs.
There is typically a highly stylized Gothic letter T, which looks like the letter C, on coins of this subtype. On those struck in Buda this letter appears on the obverse.

Struck at Esztergom, and issued continuously, probably for decades (per Tóth-Kiss), beginning ca. 1020 (per Gyöngyössy), or 1018-1038 (per Jonsson). According to Jonsson, this type was struck according to two weight standards; a "heavy denar" (average weight 1.24 g.) and "light denar" (average weight .80 g.), with different issuance dates. However, no catalog differentiates the type by weight. It would appear that Jonsson's "light denar" corresponds to this type (which has an average weight of .78 g.) and that his "heavy denar" corresponds to the similar Huszár 4; Tóth-Kiss 1.7, Réthy I 7 (which has an average weight of 1.24 g).
Faintich speculates that the wedges on this coin are cometary symbols that may represent the comet of 975 (the year of Stephen's birth).
Huszár rarity 9, Toth-Kiss rarity 200, Unger rarity 65, Frynas rarity N.
Note: “[T]he half denars or obols of the Bavarian princes, coined at Regensburg, have been identified as the direct models for the first Hungarian coins. . . Yet the design of the Hungarian coin refrained from a servile imitation of the Bavarian model, partly by omitting to copy the representation of the Carlovingian [sic] church from the reverse of the Bavarian obols, partly by showing independent taste in shaping the cross, and applying the linear Greek cross. Finally the capital letter types of the legend on Bavarian coins completely differ from the peculiar characters to be seen on the first Hungarian coins, which are engraved with unusual forms actually reminiscent of runic marks” (Huszár 1963, 6-7).Stkp

The extra obverse titles give away the fact that this was struck at the Unknown Eastern Mint, another obverse type has the 'PM' underneath the bust of the Emperor on the Obverse.
One of three known reverse types struck at this Unknown Mint of the East of the Emperor Philip I. The other two are the ' PAX FUNDATA CUM PERSIS' - and 'SPES FELICITATIS ORBIS'

Now, I know some other people on here have some other, and much nicer examples from this mint, and I would encourage them to post them in this 'Roman Mint Styles' Gallery.
Some people classify these coins as being from Antioch, here is an interesting link:

Huszár 580, Pohl 119-24, Unger 451b, Réthy II 125A217 viewsHungary. Sigismund (Zsigmond, in Hun.) of Luxembourg (1387-1437; Holy Roman Emperor 1433-1437). AR parvus, 11.5 mm., .27 gr.
Obv: Four-part shield (Árpádian stripes and eagle), S—V—R above and flanking, * (privy mark) above at left.
Rev: Cross with four crowns between its arms.
The type was struck in 1387-1427 (per Pohl, Huszár & Unger, although this emission terminated in 1410 per Engel). This privy mark was struck in Nagybánya (now Baia Mare, Romania) (per Pohl).
Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4.
The parvus (also called the “small denar” fillér or pankart) was struck with an average nominal fineness of 0.353 silver. Because of many worn out and counterfeit coins it was pulled from circulation after 1427 (per Huszár). Although not specifically discussed in this context in Engel, the parvus must have experienced the same rampant debasement as the denar did.
“Owing to inner strife and disordered general conditions, the coins [of this period] were usually minted with extremely low precious metal content; moreover, poor mintages were often struck with negligently engraved dies. As a result of the hurried, superficial minting, it was sometimes doubtful whether a faulty coin had been issued officially, or was a forgery” (Huszár 1963, at 15). This emission is typically struck on a small flan. This coin is unusually well struck for the type, and on a full flan.Stkp

Belt Strap Ends - not Apron terminals!217 viewsI had previously listed these items as small pendants hung at the end of the straps found below the Legionnaries armour.
This is not correct!
They are actually pendants for the ends of military belts from the mid-2nd to the mid-3rd century AD.
These belts, which used a variety of different buckle styles, split into two towards their end.
Each of the two parts ended in one such hanger, thus each belt set used two.
References:
Two examples on left with small tip at bottom:
Militaria Sisciensia, # 318, 322 + 330.
Redzic, Viminacium, # 814 + 817, type XXVIv1.
Example second from right with plain bottom:
Militaria Sisciensia, # 320, 321, 323, 324, 327, 328, 333, 336 + 339.
Redzic, Viminacium, # 815, 820, 830, 835, type XXVIv1.
Caerleon Canabae, fig. 92, # 167.
The large example, with a concave back, is similar to a 1st century example from the Rhein at Mainz in Roman Military Equipment, 1st edition, figure 99, #1 but is quite large and may instead be a brass drawer handle from post-medieval furniture. However, one was also found in a Roman context at Rusovce near Bratislava, Kostromichev, Kherson necropolis, page 116, fig. 8, # 12.SC

1 mon (cast copper alloy), from 1728 (Kyoho 13), Ishinomaki, Sendai mint, 24 mm. This variety is known as isho choutsu (different writing, high tsu).
Obv: Kanei tsuho.
Rev: Blank.
Kanei Tsuho coins were first cast in small quantities in 1626 in Mito, but in 1636, the Tokugawa government ordered that large quantities be cast, and distributed model coins to private subcontractors in locations throughout Japan. By the 1650’s 16 different locations were casting these coins. When the Kanei era ended in 1643 the legend was kept in use until the 1860’s. All of the Kanei coins cast before 1668 are known as “old Kanei” and those cast from 1668 are now known as “new Kanei.” They are distinguished by the legs of the Ho character. This coin is a new Kanei. In the early 1700’s copper mines began to be exhausted in Japan and it gradually became too expensive to manufacture copper coins. In response, the government authorized the casting of iron coins in 1739. Copper alloy coins continued to be made but were frequently of less weight and lower quality, and from 1768 were mainly minted in a higher denomination.
