An interesting reverse depicting a mythological scene: Leto and her children Artemis and Apollo. The two were fathered by Zeus, arousing Hera's jealousy. Leto was banned from giving birth on earth or sea, but found the island of Delos, which supposedly was not connected to either.

Obv: IMP CAES DOMIT AVG GERM P M TR P VI; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: IMP XIIII COS XIII CENS P P P; Minerva stg. l., with spear (M4)
RIC 511 (C). BMC 107. RSC 213. BNC 107.

The first denarius issue of 87 continued in the same style and format as those of 86 (an unadorned, idealised portrait with the four basic Minervas on the reverse), setting a tone the rest of the reign for the denarii. These issues were quite small compared with what was to come over the next nine years. This coin from the first issue has a very idealised portrait in the Flavian baroque style. Icy cool with an expression of "critical disdain" as C. H. V. Sutherland put it in his book "Roman Coins".

Struck on a large flan with a stunning portrait in extraordinary condition - part of Domitian's mutton-chops beard is visible, a very rare thing indeed. One of the finest portraits of him in my collection.

[IMP] CONSTANTINVS PF AVG, bust left, cuir., laureate, shield over left shoulder, spear over right

PROVIDE-NT-IAE AVGG, female figure (possibly Moneta) on prow, holding cornucopia, facing what must be the personification of Arles, who is holding a standard (Ben informs me that this may be a symbol of Constantine's Italian victory).

QARL in exergue

3.57g, 21.4mm
RIC Arles 30

This particular issue is quite unusual with this obverse type, however I am aware of one other in existence. The symbolism of this type and it's partner, VTILITAS PVBLICA, is rather special. On the VTILITAS issue, Moneta is on prow also, but facing away from the figure (probably the personification of Ostia) on the shore, as if departing. On the Providentiae issue, Moneta is depicted as arriving at Arles. An interesting oddity of my example however: On most of these coins, the figure on shore is not wearing a turreted headdress, while on this example, she is.

Interesting coin because it was the last of the billion tetartera , the billion series was retired due to inflation. Hendy has dated this coin early in his reign partially because of the legend of the DOC example. However, this coin contridicts that, here the legend is not abreviated but has the complete family name as does the example in coin archives. I still believe that these coins were minted early on in the Alexius IIIrd sole reign. This example is the nicest of the other examples I have seen on the web and in DOC

Huszár 576, Pohl 117-1, Unger 449a, Réthy II 121230 viewsHungary. Sigismund (Zsigmond, in Hun.) of Luxembourg (1387-1437; Holy Roman Emperor 1433-1437). AR denar, 14 mm.

Obv: MOn • SIG—ISMVnDI, Patriarchal cross.

Rev: + • REGIS VnGARIE ETC, Four-part shield (Árpádian stripes and Brandenburg eagle).

The type was struck in 1390-1427 (per Pohl, Huszár & Unger).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4. The descriptions and depictions vary amongst the references with respect to the presence or absence of pellets in the reverse legend. This coin comports with the description and depictions in Huszár.

This emission was withdrawn from circulation after 1427. It was struck with a nominal fineness of 0.582 silver and an average weight of 0.51 g. (per Huszár). However, Engel notes that in 1390 Sigismund was able to temporarily restore the stability of the denar by the issuance of this new emission, which was referred to as nova moneta. For thirteen years the value of the denar remained stable, and 100 were the equivalent of the aranyforint. In 1403 debasement occurred, and130 were the equivalent of the aranyforint. The debasements continued, so that by 1406 the price of an aranyforint was 160 denars, it was 200 in 1421, 225 in 1423 and 320 in 1426.

“Owing to inner strife and disordered general conditions, the coins [of this period] were usually minted with extremely low precious metal content; moreover, poor mintages were often struck with negligently engraved dies. As a result of the hurried, superficial minting, it was sometimes doubtful whether a faulty coin had been issued officially, or was a forgery” (Huszár 1963, at 15).

Rev: anepigraphic, Augustus, radiate head right between two stars. RIC I 2, BMC 4, Sear 1808. Ex personal collection Steve McBride/Incitatus Coins.

Son of Germanicus, Gaius was adopted by Tiberius and was proclaimed Emperor on Tiberius’ death. His reign, marked by cruelty, was ended when he was assassinated by the Praetorian Guard. There is some question when the Imperial Mint was moved from Lugdunum to Rome, but the majority view holds at least Gaius’ early issues were still from Lugdunum.

With more than moderate wear and damage, this coin still has an almost complete obverse legend, and is a decent weight. It was very difficult for me to track down a denarius of Gaius.

RIC 941 (C). BMC 210. RSC 136. BNC 186.
Acquired from Glenn W. Woods, November 2003. Ex unspecified CNG MBS.

A somewhat common reverse type which copies a design previously struck for Marc Antony. One of the major themes of Vespasian's coinage was his recoining of many past reverse types. Perhaps not chosen at random, many of these may have had some sort of contemporary meaning.

A most intriguing reverse type with the star and prow creating an eye appealing reverse design.

*Graffiti: On the obverse of this coin two dates have been carved in the open fields on either side of the busts. They appear to be "27/3/83" and "24/3/83" I don't know whether the '83" in the date is for 1883 or 1983, since this coin was minted in 1861.

This coin holds it own amongst the masterpieces of late Hellenistic portraiture. The obverse image is that of a confident and contented ruler, Nikomedes II (149-127 BC), comfortable in his role leading a client state of Rome, while secure in the knowledge that the military might of the latter underpinned his position. Following Nikomedes II reign, the portrait on the obverse of the kingdom’s coinage continued unchanged, through the reign of his son (Nikomedes III) and grandson (Nikomedes IV). However, the issuing king can be readily identified by the date on coins and to a lesser degree by the style of the obverse.

Nikomedes II commenced the practice of dating Bithynian coinage, with reference to the era commencing 297/6 BC, this date being the date of foundation of the Bithynian Kingdom by Zipoetes. This coin was struck shortly after the death of Nikomedes II and the portrait closely resembles that on coins struck during his reign. It is an accurate portrayal of Nikomedes II. With time the portrait became increasingly stylized so that some examples struck toward the end of the kingdom’s existence bear only a passing resemblance to the original portrait.

This celebrated temple had been rebuilt by Nero following the great fire of 64 AD. The Neronian structure survived until another conflagration late in the reign of Commodus and was again restored early in the 3rd century by Julia Domna. It was again rebuilt in more modern times where it still stands in the Roman Forum to this day.

Die notes from Curtis Clay:

"Same dies, and better condition, than the Paris spec., pl. LVII, 663.

The BM spec., pl. 26.9, also illustrated in RIC, pl. 40, 601, is also from the same rev. die, but a different obv. die.

The BM and Paris specimens of the same As for Titus COS II CENS are also from that same rev. die: BM pl. 27.7 = RIC pl. 42, 640; Paris pl. LIX, 689."

Hercules of the Theatre of Pompey229 viewsThe Hercules of the Theatre of Pompey, from the 2nd Century A.D., was discovered in 1864. It had been carefully buried under protective tiles, incised FCS (fulgor conditum summanium), indicating that it had been struck by lightning, and had been carefully interred on the spot. The figure supports himself lightly on his grounded vertical club; the skin of the Nemean Lion is draped over his left forearm, he holds the apples of Hesperides in his left hand. The sculpture is now in the round room area of Museo Pio-Clementino.2 commentsJoe Sermarini

Ref: Randolph, Marc A. “Jewish Homes for the Aged Tokens,” The Shekel, XXXVI No. 3 (May-June 2003) 14-19, Figure 2.

Note: The B & S. Steinhouse Old People’s Home opened in Montreal in 1923 and soon merged with the Nachlass Zkainim Home. In 1927, encouraged by the newly formed Federation of Jewish Philanthropies of Montreal, the combined B & S. Steinhouse/Nachlass Zkainim Home For the Aged amalgamated with the Montreal Hebrew Sheltering Home, a/k/a Moshav Zkainim (which was founded in 1910, and then housed six residents on Evans Street). The institution raised funds for the construction of a larger building on land owned by the Montreal Sheltering Home on Esplanade Street. By 1945, the average age of new residents was over eighty, and increased medical and nursing staff were required. The institution changed its name to Maimonides Hospital and Home for the Aged to reflect this expanded role. The institution still exists, as the Maimonides Geriatric Center of McGill University.

Note: The token was issued sometime between 1923 (when B & S. Steinhouse Old People’s Home opened) and 1945 (when the amalgamated institution changed its name to Maimonides Hospital and Home for the Aged), and probably no later than 1927 (when the combined B & S. Steinhouse/Nachlass Zkainim Home For the Aged) amalgamated with the Montreal Hebrew Sheltering Home, a/k/a Moshav Zkainim). It may even have been issued in connection with the fund drive that was initiated in 1927 to build the larger building on Esplanade Street.

The r. leg of the figure has these strange indentations. But here the die cutter has cut a vertical deepening at the right side of the pattern in question so that there is no direct connection to the rest of the garment. It looks more like a obliquely grooved column.

Fake RIC 22a228 viewsHere we have a series of late Otho obverses. The one on the left (RIC 10) and in the middle (RIC 22) are authentic coins minted with the same obverse die. The one on the right is a cast copy (RIC 22) based on the same die (but not either of these coins!!). The forger has overdone the job in making the coin look better. Clearly the original one had worn hair and the added detail is not well executed. The neck has been slightly modified as well, but all in all this would fool the majority of buyers. The reverse has fatal flaws revealing the casting - please have a look at the accompanying detailed image.jmuona

An early issue Eastern denarius of Vespasian, perhaps one of the first. Attributed to an uncertain mint in Asia Minor, the jury is still out concerning the exact location, Ephesus is the most likely candidate.

I love this coin. The portrait is one of my favorites and the style is simply beautiful. A welcomed addition to the collection.

Perge_Collonaded_Street.jpg
Turkey, Perga - Collonaded Street227 viewsPart of the wide (20m) colonnaded boulevard which runs almost the whole length of the lower city (over 500m), testimony to Perge’s importance as a commercial centre. In antiquity both sides of the street would have been lined with fancy shops, and the ‘shopping experience’ was enhanced by an ornamental water canal running down the middle of the road, fed from the nymphaeum which you can see at the far end. Beyond the nymphaeum is the path leading up to the city’s acropolis. Abu Galyon
