Huszár 722, Pohl 223-1, Unger 567b&e, Réthy II 232, Kaplan Subtype A 240 viewsHungary. Matthias "Corvinus" (Mátyás Hunyadi in Hun.) (1458-1490). AR denar, 16 mm.

Obv: + M • MATHIE • R • VNGARIE •, Four-part shield with Hungarian arms (Árpádian stripes, patriarchal cross, Dalmatian leopard heads, Bohemian lion), raven with ring in escutcheon, pellets to sides.

Rev: PATRON — VNGARIE •, Nimbate crowned Madonna with nimbate infant Jesus to her right, K—P/rosette (privy mark) in fields.

The type was struck in 1487-1490 (per Pohl) or 1489-1490 (per Huszár & Unger), with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g. This privy mark was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Peter Schaider, oberkammergraf (per Pohl), in 1489 (per Pohl & Unger).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4. This type has three subtypes. Subtype A comprises around 70% of the coins of this emission. This privy mark appears on multiple subtypes, and on roughly 85% of the coins of this type.

Subtype A coins have pellets to the sides of the shield. It is depicted in Pohl, and also in Unger and Réthy (albeit inaccurately – they do not depict a ring in the raven’s beak).

COVENTRY HALF-PENNY240 viewsCOVENTRY HALF-PENNY - CU 1797 Coventry half-penny. Obv.: Lady Godiva rides horse left. Above: PRO BONO PUBLICO - Date in exurge. Reverse: Elephant with tower on back walks right. COVENTRY HALF-PENNY. Reference: Conder #68.
From the Birmingham Museum: In the late 18th century the Royal Mint did not make enough low value coins to satisfy the growing demand for small change. As a result, many towns and cities started producing their own token money. This halfpenny token was issued at Coventry in Warwickshire. It depicts the famous story of Lady Godiva, who supposedly rode naked through the streets to win a reduction in the city’s taxes from her husband, Earl Leofric. The reverse shows that the die cutter had clearly never seen a real elephant!

Serpent, Nero Tetradrachm - Agathodaemon with Opium Poppy Pods and Grain, RY: 3240 views--
*Not sure if this would be considered a 'zoo animal'.... it seems at least half of it is ..... but it sure does look amazing and intricate on some coins, and is often depicted wearing the crowns of upper and lower Egypt, like the Pharohs of old, you can see the crown on his head on this example fairly well, as well as the Opium Poppies and Grain.
-----
Description:
-------------
Roman Empire
Emperor Nero Caesar (54 - 68 AD)
AR/BI Tetradrachm of Alexandria, Egypt.
Regnal Year: 3 = ( 56/57 AD )

(titles in Greek)
obv: Laureate head right
rev: Agathodaemon serpent rearing up, with two Opium Poppy Pods, and two Grain Ears. Date in right field. Regnal Year: 3

Size: 28mm
Weight: 12.4 Grams
---
more info on the coin:
-------------------
The Agathodaemon was a good spirit/demon that was worshipped by the ancient Egyptians.
He had the shape of a serpent with a human head.
The Greek inscription on the reverse of this coin shows that this is the "neo" or "new" agathodaemon serpent, or, in other words, the new good spirit (of rule by Nero).

RIC 845 (R). BMC 255. RSC 2 (under Domitian and Domitia). RPC 866 (6 spec.). BNC -.
Acquired from Harlan J. Berk, eBay, 30 December 2013. Ex Harlan J. Berk BBS 145, 14 September 2005, lot 459.

Domitian's cistophori were minted in Rome for distribution in Asia Minor on two separate occasions: at the beginning of the reign in 82 and near the end in 95. The type with the empress Domitia on the reverse can be dated to the first group based on Domitian's COS date. The style and die axis are similar to the denarii minted at Rome during the same period, firmly placing these cistophori to that mint.

A most fitting type to be minted at the beginning of the reign. Two similar portraits in a wonderfully "Flavian" style.

Rev: PATROn — VnGAR •, Veiled Madonna with infant Jesus to her right, K –shield (privy mark) in fields.

The type was struck 1468-1470 (per Unger), 1468-1481 (per Huszár) or 1468-1484 (per Pohl), with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g.
This privy mark was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya,
Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Johannes Constorfer, kammergraf, in 1469 (per Pohl).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 3. This is a highly variable type with four subtypes. Subtype A is the most common variety, comprising around 50% of the coins in the emission. This is a common privy mark, appearing only on this subtype and on around 33% of the coins of this type.

In Subtype A coins, the obverse legend is + M MAThIE.R.VnGARIE (or a minor variant), per Huszar and Pohl, but contrary to the description in Huszár, there is either no escutcheon or just faint hints of an escutcheon, and there is no ring in the raven's beak. They are depicted in Huszár/Pohl but not depicted in Unger or Réthy.

RIC 131; RSC246a.

At the age of fourteen, Elagabalus became high priest of the sun-god Elagabalus at Emesa in Syria. The cult was represented by a sacred stone, and in AD 219 when he moved from Emesa to Rome, he took the stone, probably a meteorite, with him. During his reign, Elagabalus devoted his efforts to the promotion of his cult god, building a lavish temple to house the stone. The reverse type and legend on the present coin promote his position as high priest of the sun-god Elagabalus.

(27 mm, 17.29 g, 5h).

This is the only known example of SC 94.3c that bears a reverse struck from a die on which the anchor that is normally found in the outer left field has been erased. It is the one of two erased anchor issues in the name of Alexander outside of museum collections. The other example SC 94.5 is also to be found in the LT collection. The anchor erasure has not been documented on SC 94.3c, although it is known on three examples of SC 94.4 that bear a ΠAT monogram mint control in the place of the circled NE monogram found on this coin. The obverse of this coin is a die match to an example of SC 94.4, SNG Copenhagen 670, illustrated in Morkholm Plate V, 82. This previously unrecorded example of anchor erasure is further evidence that the erasure was a systematic and deliberate act in the Babylon II mint that appears to have occurred around the time that Seleukos adopted the royal title.

“Apart from Demeter, lady of the golden sword and glorious fruits, she was playing with the deep-bosomed daughters of Oceanus and gathering flowers over a soft meadow, roses and crocuses and beautiful violets, irises also and hyacinths and the narcissus which Earth made to grow at the will of Zeus and to please the Host of Many, to be a snare for the bloom-like girl -- a marvelous, radiant flower. It was a thing of awe whether for deathless gods or mortal men to see: from its root grew a hundred blooms and it smelled most sweetly, so that all wide heaven above and the whole earth and the sea's salt swell laughed for joy. And the girl was amazed and reached out with both hands to take the lovely toy; but the wide-pathed earth yawned there in the plain of Nysa, and the lord, Host of Many, with his immortal horses sprang out upon her -- the Son of Cronos, He who has many names.”

Signed: DVFOVR

Jean Warin was born at Liege about 1604 and died in Paris in 1672. He is considered to be one of the foremost medallists of France and the best French Engraver of coin-dies of the seventeenth century. Of the many medals attributed to him, most were engraved and struck although some were cast. Besides medal making Jean Warin had a variety of other interests. He distinguished himself somewhat as a painter but most particularly as a sculptor, even rivaling the great Italian sculptor Bernini. He also experimented in medal making capacity of machinery and helped develop an improved method for coin making. In fact, his fame was established more for his other artistic endeavors than for those as a medallist.

Jean Warin led a somewhat checkered personal life. He seduced the wife of one of his compatriots and was accused at one point of forging coins, for which he was sentenced to banishment for five years. Fortunately for him he had cultivated a champion in Cardinal Richelieu, who, so as not to lose the skill of this great artist, intervened on his behalf, resulting in a pardon.

Jean Warin occupies a pivotal place in the history of medallic art. He took the techniques developed during the Italian renaissance and by mastering the machinery at the Monnaie du Moulin, transformed the art to serve the state. His influence extended not only in France but throughout all of Northern Europe, well into the eighteenth century.

BMCRE 155; Cohen 94, RIC I 176 var (obv legend)
38.6mm, 180o, 63 A.D. Rome mint.
This sestertius was an early emission from the Rome Mint, which resumed striking bronze after about 10 years of inactivity. The talented engraver, perhaps with extra time for this initial project, produced one of the best dies in the entire imperial bronze series. The special style, complemented by superior execution, has similarities to later medallions.

The fine expressive portrait has higher relief than the more common Lugdunum issues.
The reverse uses the roundness of the flan and three geometric planes of relief to both present the scene in a format that draws the eye to the emperor and show movement that is lacking on almost all other Roman coins. The rare use of geometric planes was repeated on ADLOCVTIO sestertii of Galba five years later, perhaps the work of the same artist. Rome sestertii after 70 A.D. are of far less impressive style.

The lack of SC leaves the reverse fields uncluttered. SC stood for Senatus Consultum, "By Decree of the Senate" and signified the role of the Senate in the minting of brass and bronze coinage. Many sestertii of Caligula and some brass and bronze of Nero lack SC. Subsequent issues include SC again, until inflation produced the demise of the sestertius under Gallienus, c. 265 AD

The type was struck 1468-1470 (per Unger), 1468-1481 (per Huszár) or 1468-1484 (per Pohl), with an average fineness of approximately .500 silver, and an average weight of .59023 g.
This privy mark was struck in Buda (now Budapest) by Stephen Mikola or Stephen Kowách in 1468 (per Pohl).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 3. It is a highly variable type with four Subtypes. Subtype C is one of the least common, comprising around 10% of the coins in the emission. This is an uncommon privy mark, appearing only on this subtype and on only around 1% of the coins of this type.

Subtype C coins lack a cross at the beginning of the obverse legend, which is M • MAThIE • R • hVnGARIE • (or a minor variant), have an escutcheon, and are without a ring in the raven's beak. They are neither described nor depicted in any of the catalogs.

There is typically a highly stylized Gothic letter T, which looks like the letter C, on coins of this subtype. On those struck in Buda this letter appears on the obverse.

RIC 0985 Titus as Caesar [Vespasian]236 viewsAR Denarius, 3.53g
Rome Mint, July 77 AD - December 78 AD
Obv: T CAESAR VESPASIANVS; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: IMP XIII in exergue; Goatherd std. l., milking goat l.
RIC 985 (R). BMC 230. RSC 103. BNC 204.
Ex Harry N. Sneh Collection.

This type had been one of my 'dream coins' since I started collecting Flavian denarii. A very tough coin to find and one I couldn't resist. Curiously enough, it has a frequency rating of rare in RIC, as does the more common Vespasian variant of the type. I think the Titus is a bit rarer.

It is quite obvious that this reverse is part of an agrarian propaganda series. Unlike the goat referring to Jupiter as seen on a denarius of Domitian as Caesar (RIC 267 (Titus), this type has rustic overtones.

I love this reverse, well centered and fairly clear. Unfortunately, I only have the old dealer's pic.

PET095_Jerash_Temple.jpg
Jordan, Jerash - Temple of Artemis236 viewsArtemis was the patron goddess of Gerasa, and the temple dedicated to her was one of the city’s grandest monuments. It was reached by ascending an imposing processional Sacred Way, starting from the Cardo. The temple was built during the mid 2nd-century CE and worship continued there until suppressed by Theodosius around 391. Afterwards, in Byzantine times, part of the Sacred Way was converted into a church (the ‘Propylaeum Church’) and the temple courtyard was used as a pottery workshop, while the naos itself was left to crumble quietly away. Greek, Ptolemy II Tetradrachm 236 viewsSilver tetradrachm, Svoronos 626 var (no monogram) or Svoronos 644 var (D behind ear), VF, Phoenicia, Tyre mint, weight 14.076g, maximum diameter 27.4mm, die axis 0o, obverse diademed head of Ptolemy I right wearing aegis; reverse PTOLEMAIOU BASILEWS, eagle standing left on thunderbolt, Tyre monogram and club left; rare;

Ex Forvm

Svoronos' description for tetradrachm 626 is the "same as the gold pentadrachm." In the notes for the pentadrachm he notes the type sometimes has a Tyre monogram, but the notes for the tetradrachm 626 discuss only countermarks and not a monogram. The monogram is absent on the plate coin.

Svoronos 644 is be marked with a tiny D behind Ptolemy's ear. On this coin the mark appears to be absent.
