This sestertius is a fairly common type but examples are so often misshapen or split at the edges. Also it has one of the liveliest portraits of Philip the Arab that I have encountered. He seems to be keeping a watchful and sardonic eye on the viewer.

Repeating pattern of cloaked male figure blowing horn while engaged in a sexual act with a female bending forward and looking back. additional information from Harlan J. Berk: Erotic bowls of this type are extremely rare and this example appears to be unrecorded. Restored from many fragments, but only two significant loses to the rim with one extending into the design.

Without the breaks in the silver, the unofficial lettering would give this away as a fouree, as would the die axis and light weight. Interestingly, this coin mimics RIC II 737 minted in 92 A.D. which RIC lists as vary rare (R2). IMP XXII was Domitian’s final imperial acclamation.

Aristobulus, the oldest son of Hyrcanus, was the first Hasmonean to officially take the title “King of the Jews.” This was the kingdom of a Levite priest, it was not a restoration of God’s kingdom in the line of King David of the royal tribe of Judah.
The Judaeans considered him heartless and cruel. This reputation appears completely justified even within his own family. After taking power he starved his mother to death in a dungeon and assassinated his brother. His rule lasted no more than a year.

In classical times the modern city of Ayas was called Aigeai and belonged to Greater Cilicia (Cilicia Pedias). The site is strategically located on the Gulf of Issos and was originally founded by Greco-Macedonian colonists and named after the Macedonian capital Aegae. Due to its strategic location in launching attacks against Armenia, Pontos and Parthia, Julius Caesar gave the city a special status of oppidum liberum or a “free city” in autumn of 47 BC, probably early November of that year.

This is an exceedingly rare Domitian, this may be the third known specimen that shares dies with the other two known examples. Domitian’s Censorial title was added at this time, and began as CENSORIA POTESTAT as seen on this example before being shortened to CENS POTES. Coins with these titles are rare indicating the production may have been short lived. It’s also a rare example of the portrait with an aegis.

Reverse: "mah-i isfandarmuz-i ilahi / zarb agra / sanat 10 / 1025" (the month of Isfandarmuz of the ilahi month, struck Agra year 10, 1025).

Prince Salim's accession to the Mughal throne occured in 1605 AD following the death of his father, Jalal-ud-din Muhammad Akbar. Prince Salim chose the titular name of Nur-ud-din Muhammad Jahangir and ruled in a fair and just manner. Jahangir was born amidst luxury and opulence and he was a refined, educated and cultured man. He excelled in astronomy, zoology, painting etc and was liberal and tolerant towards other religions. As a prince, he was known for his affair with Anarkali, a courtesan, who, as rumoured, was buried alive by an incensed Akbar. Later Jahangir married a Persian widow, Nur Jahan, who became his favorite wife and a capable administrator as in the last few years of his reign Jahangir's mental and physical health deteriorated under the influence of alcohol and opium. Jahangir died in 1627 AD.

Under Jahangir, numismatics reached its greatest zenith. Jahangir minted some of the best known coins of the world including the largest gold coin ever minted, a 1,000 Tola (12 Kg) gold mohur, zodiac coins in gold and silver, portrait coins of himself and Akbar, and coins featuring poetic couplets. Some of these innovations were radical and defied the Islamic tradition viz zodiac & portrait coins. Shah Jahan, Jahangir's son and successor, ordered death penalty for anyone found using the zodiac coin series (consider as un-Islamic) as well as coins bearing the name of his step-mother, Nur Jahan, as she had undue influence over Jahangir and had interfered in Shah Jahan's accession, that makes them a great rarity today. No wonder coins of Jahangir are considered works of art and are much sought after by collectors around the world.

The featured specimen is an elegant square coin of Jahangir with magnificent work of calligraphy and depiction of vines, creepers, flowers, sunbursts and what not on the coin. It is most certainly struck from the Gold Mohur dies. All square rupee's were intended as 'nazrana' or tribute. The Ilahi coins were struck as round or square shape in alternate months. The ornate multiple dotted borders (thin inner border, thick outer border) together with the artistic scroll work, calligraphy and the flora depicted on the coin makes it an exquisite specimen, more so remarkable due to the absence of any shroff 'test' marks that disfigure and plague the Mughal coin series. The coin has great eye appeal and is a fine tribute to one of the best known numismatic innovator of his time.

HUN_Zsigmond_Huszar_580_Pohl_119-29_2.JPG
Huszár 580, Pohl 119-72, Unger 451ll, Réthy II 125A68 viewsHungary. Sigismund (Zsigmond, in Hun.) of Luxembourg (1387-1437; Holy Roman Emperor 1433-1437). AR parvus, 8x10 mm.

Obv: Four-part shield (Árpádian stripes and eagle), S—V—R above and flanking, symbols to the left and right of the S (privy mark).

Rev: Cross with four crowns between its arms.

The type was struck in 1387-1427 (per Pohl, Huszár & Unger, although this emission terminated in 1410 per Engel). This privy mark was struck in Buda (now Budapest) by Onofrio Bardi, kammergraf, from 1418-1424 (per Pohl).

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4.

The parvus (also called the “small denar” fillér or pankart) was struck with an average nominal fineness of 0.353 silver. Because of many worn out and counterfeit coins it was pulled from circulation after 1427 (per Huszár). Although not specifically discussed in this context in Engel, the parvus must have experienced the same rampant debasement as the denar did.

“Owing to inner strife and disordered general conditions, the coins [of this period] were usually minted with extremely low precious metal content; moreover, poor mintages were often struck with negligently engraved dies. As a result of the hurried, superficial minting, it was sometimes doubtful whether a faulty coin had been issued officially, or was a forgery” (Huszár 1963, at 15). This emission is typically struck on a small flan.

O:Laureate bust right, slight drapery, IMP TRAIANVS AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P
R: Marcus Ulpius Traianus seated left on curule chair, holding patera in right hand and hasta pura in left (attributes of divinity), DIVVS PATER TRAIAN
RIC II 252 corr. (fully draped bust); Woytek 406b; RSC 140.

Trajan's father, Marcus Ulpius Traianus was the most distinguished of the gens Ulpii, a family originally hailing from Tuder in Umbria which had settled in Baetica in Spain. His success in both war and politics paved the way for his son to become the first non-Italian emperor of Rome.

He came to prominence while commanding the 10th Legion during the Jewish War. Having pounded the city of Joppa close to submission, he presented Titus with the honor of leading the final assault. As a reward, Vespasian made Ulpius Traianus a consul.

Serving as governor of Syria from 73 to 77, the elder Trajan was later proconsul of all Asia from 79 to 80. In that capacity he earned honors in actions against the Parthians, built two vital roads and shored up the frontier defenses.

Trajan deified his adopted father Nerva in 98, though without immediately striking coins for the new Divus. Trajan Pater died about two years after his son took the purple and was also, as this coin shows, deified by him.

Trajan's natural father seems to have been consecrated in connection with the dedication of Trajan's Forum in Jan. 112. That was the occasion for the striking of this denarius type for DIVVS PATER TRAIAN early in 112.
