A reverse that announces Vespasian's desire to found a dynasty. Titus and Domitian are represented here as magistrates holding the branch of peace. A rare type.
A coin that looks much better in hand than the picture allows. I was pleasantly surprised when I first saw it. A reverse I have sought after for quite sometime. Earlier this year (2006) Harlan J Berk sold a coin of this type that was both an obv. and rev. die match with mine. After a casual look around, I was able to locate another die match. David Atherton

The only known example of the TI mint control on the Holt F series - previously unrecorded.
Based on die matches to Holt F8.2 (obverse) and Holt F8.3 (reverse with modified controls) the coin is an immediate precursor to the Holt F8 group and thus fits between Holt’s F7 and F8 groups. Struck at Mint "B" (probably Baktra/Balkh) ca. 230-225 BC.

Greece, Delos - Temple of Issis262 viewsThe Cycladic island of Delos was revered in antiquity as the birthplace of Apollo and Artemis. During the early Classical era it was a sacred religious precinct dedicated to the worship of these gods. In the late fifth century BC, at the peak of its role as a religious sanctuary, neither birth nor death was permitted to occur on the island. However, commercial imperatives were soon to over ride this religious taboo. Delos occupied a central position with respect to the trade routes of the Mediterranean, so that by the late 3rd century BC commercial activity overtook its role as a religious sanctuary. The sacred character of the island dissipated, displaced by a cosmopolitan trading centre. By the 2nd century BC it had evolved to become the centre of the Mediterranean slave trade. Strabo recorded that up to 10,000 people per day were trafficked through its slave market. This role continued into the early Roman era, until in 88 BC Mithradates VI, King of Pontus, decimated the population in an attack on the island. In 69 BC the pirates of Athenodoros destroyed what remained of the commercial centre of Delos and it fell into decline, to be effectively abandoned by the 6th century AD.

In 80 AD while Titus was away in Campania surveying the damage Vesuvius had caused in the region the previous Fall, a devastating fire broke out in Rome, damaging much of the city center. One of the most important buildings affected by the fire was the Temple of Capitoline Jupiter, rebuilt recently by Vespasian. The temple being the most sacred and important building in Rome, Titus began rebuilding it immediately. Construction was still ongoing when Titus died of natural causes in September of 81. A cistophorus commemorating the rebuilding of the structure was struck for Domitian but it was not until 1948 with the discovery of this reverse type for Titus when the BM acquired a specimen was the type known to be minted for Titus. Needless to say it is extremely rare. Since 1948 seven other examples have surfaced, four of which are in public collections. A.M. Woodward speculates the type for Domitian is actually a hybrid struck from carry-over dies intended for Titus. This cistophorus was minted in Rome for export to Asia Minor. The style and die axis are similar to the denarii from Rome during the same period, firmly placing it to that mint. This coin is an obverse die match with Gemini IX, lot 458.

Claudius was a capable, yet unlikely emperor. Shunned as an idiot by his family due to a limp and embarrassing stutter. After Caligula's murder the Praetorian Guard proclaimed him emperor. He governed well and conquered the troublesome island of Britain. He was poisoned by his second wife, mother of Nero. CLIPEUS, a round shield, taken over from the Greeks, a symbol of valour and victory in Roman art. CLIPEUS VIRTUTIS, an award given to soldiers who have saved the life of a comrade in battle, like the CORONA CIVICA. In the case of Nero the meaning is probably a more general one.Jochen

Following description taken from NAC auction 40, #617, about an other example of the same coin :
"This denarius, depicting the bare heads of Marc Antony and his youngest brother Lucius Antony, is a rare dual-portrait issue of the Imperatorial period. The family resemblance is uncanny, and one wonders if they truly looked this much alike, or if it is another case of portrait fusion, much like we observe with the dual-portrait billon tetradrachms of Antioch on which the face of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII takes on the square dimensions of Marc Antony. When Antony fled Rome to separate himself from Octavian and to take up his governorship in Gaul, Lucius went with him, and suffered equally from the siege of Mutina. This coin, however, was struck in a later period, when Lucius had for a second time taken up arms against Octavian in the west. Marc Antony was already in the east, and that is the region from which this coinage emanates. Since Lucius lost the ‘Perusine War’ he waged against Octavian, and was subsequently appointed to an office in Spain, where he died, it is likely that he never even saw one of his portrait coins."Potator II

Note the sharp detail in recessed parts of the real coin - pellets behind the horse's neck etc - all absent or mushy in the cast coin, althoug it appears to be less "worn". Also note that the forger has re-cut the emperor´s leg, the original having been in a different angle clearly still visible in the more worn authentic coin.
