1 cash (cast brass), Board of Revenue/Board of Works mints (both in Beijing) mule, 22 mm.
Obv: Qianlong tongbao.
Rev: Boo yuwan.
Note: The obverse is of Type G1/Hartill (QC) 5.106 promulgated by the eastern branch of the Board of Revenue mint between approximately 1782 and 1795. The reverse is of Type E1/Hartill (QC) 6.66-67, promulgated by the Board of Works mint between approximately 1768 and approximately 1773. This is a fantasy coin which was perhaps fabricated by a mint worker, although the motivation for doing so is obscure. Rather illusory 'disfigurement' on the portrait, due to wear of the relief on the outer form of the ear. This ear is nevertheless still present and discernable on close inspection. Roman, Aurelian Silvered Antoninianus RIC 368296 viewsOBV: IMP C AURELIANUS AVG; Radiate and cuirassed bust right,
REV: RESTITUTOR ORBIS; Aurelian receiving a wreath from a Woman (PAX), Cyzicus Mint, about 275 AD
The coin is not the most perfect but the portrait is super. Done after Aurelian had reunited the Empire the Emperor is depicted as warrior hero, tough but humane -which Aurelian was. The relief of the ear is low compared to most coins, probably to avoid having the silvering wear off too quickly. The highlight of the eye is very realistically imitated and this makes a very animated portrait.daverino

Antony & The 12 Caesars295 viewsA variation on my other virtual coin trays. This one includes a lifetime portrait of Julius Caesar. It's difficult choosing which coin to include in this set, in some cases I only had one (Galba, Otho) but others I had many more to choose from. I do have better portraits of some but I thought these had more interesting reverse types or portrait styles:
Marcus Antonius denarius
Julius Caesar denarius
Augustus denarius
Tiberius denarius
Caligula AE As
Claudius AE As
Nero Dupondius
Galba AE As
Otho Tetradrachm
Vitellius denarius
Vespasian denarius
Titus denarius
Domitian denarius
Image is clickable for larger size.

During his reign the 1000th anniversary of the foundation of Rome (248 A.D.) was celebrated, and magnificent games were held on a scale rarely seen. In 249 A.D. a series of rebellions occurred, both Philip and his son were killed after their army was defeated near Verona by the forces of Trajan Decius. Cleisthenes

Tyche of Antioch293 viewsThe Tyche of Antioch was a cult statue of the city goddess (fortune) of Antioch, venerated in a temple called the Tychaion. The statue was made by Eutychides of Sicyon (c. 335 - c. 275), a pupil of the great Lysippus. It was the best-known piece of Seleucid art, remarkable because it was sculpted to be viewed from all directions, unlike many statues from the period. Although the original has been lost, many copies exist, including the one in the photograph right, now at the Vatican. The goddess is seated on a rock (Mount Sipylus), has her right foot on a swimming figure (the river Orontes), wears a mural crown (the city’s walls), and has grain in her right hand (the city's fertility).Joe Sermarini
