The figure on the reverse is discussed controversial. Eckhel thought it to be the rivergod Strymon. Some numismatists assume it to be feminine and call her nymph or Tellus. I think it is the Roman coin with the most details I have ever seen.Jochen

Deep sea-green patina (reverse is lighter), better in hand than the picture allows.
The reverse of this sestertius depicts the chief Roman god, Jove or Jupiter, with the epithet "Victorious," apparently a general reference to Domitian's success in securing the western and northern frontiers at this time. Although Minerva as his patron deity was usually the object of Domitian's thank offerings, Jupiter was also a pre-eminent war god who occupied a special position in the empire as protector of the emperor.

303. Gordian III88 viewsGordian III was a child emperor, but his reign was not perceived as having been burdened by the troubles faced by other young emperors. Competent administrators held important posts, and cultural traditions appear to have been upheld. Gordian III's unlikely accession and seemingly stable reign reveal that child emperors, like modern-day constitutional monarchs, had their advantage: a distance from political decision-making and factionalism that enabled the emperor to be a symbol of unity for the various constituency groups in Roman society. The paucity of information about Gordian III's reign makes it difficult to know whether the young emperor truly lived up to such an ideal, but the positive historical tradition about him gives one the suspicion that perhaps he did.

Silver Indian fanam, Cochin-Malabar Coast, Changalya Rajah, 17th-19th century88 viewsSilver Indian fanam, Cochin-Malabar Coast, Changalya Rajah, 17th-19th century
Notes: Stylized boar facing right on obv., stylized deity on reverse. 6 mm in diameter, 0.5g. Scarce.
These are actually scarcer than the gold fanams - debased gold and silver fanams were minted for short periods of time in the 18th century, and are less common. Most of these coins have 6 to 8 karat gold content and have very pale golden look to them.

Anonymous Vienna denar per Huszár (who wrote that “t cannot be determined under which ruler th[is] w[as] minted”); attributed to Béla IV (1235-1270) by Toth-Kiss, to István/Stephen V) (1270-1272) by Lengyel, tentatively attributed to László/Ladislaus IV (1272-1290) by Unger and Frynas, and to László by Adamovszky
AR denár; .56 g., 14.38 mm. max.
Obv: Agnus Dei facing left with cross-banner.
Rev: Hebrew letter ט/tet in floral wreath.
The Hebrew letter ט/tet is probably the mark of Teka, per Rádóczy and Nagy. Teka was ennobled by András II (1205-1235). A source document refers to “iudeus Teha comes in reddenda ratione nostri negocii de opere camere” (= “the Jewish Teha count by reason of our chamber [treasury] business”). His activities are recorded as early as 1225, when he acted as a financial intermediary between András II and Duke Leopold VI of Austria. He disappears from the historical texts by 1243. Rádóczy and Nagy attributed this coin to Béla IV.
“[F]oreign influence spread to contemporary Hungarian coinage from the Vienna denars, a collective term applied to the coins issued by Austrian princes beginning with the end of the 12th century through various mints. Such coins appeared as commercial currency in large quantities all over Hungary in the course of the 13th century . . . [T]he types virtually vied with the fantastic animal shapes of contemporary sculpture . . . Of these motifs, that of the Agnus Dei enjoyed particular favour in contemporary Romanesque sculpture.” (Huszár [1963] at 12).

After Zeus had defeated the Titans in the Titantomachy and apportioned their former relatives to his fellow Olympians, he was compelled to resolve a conflict with the Giants, offspring of Gaia and Cronus. Known as the Gigantomachy, these chthonic half-man, half-serpent creatures attempted to wrestle power from the Olympians by casting them out of Olympus. To accomplish this, the Giants attempted to reach Olympus by heaping up one mountain range on top of the other. From above, Zeus and the other Olympians defended themselves by hurling their weapons. In the end, however, it was the assistance of Hercules, that won the day.
