RIC 364 (C). BMC 112. RSC 144. BNC 90. Hendin 1587.
Acquired from Vaughn Rare Coin Gallery, June 2006.

This coin is part of a series of denarii which commemorates Vespasian's deification. The others in the series include the following reverses: the shield column and urn, two capricorns supporting a shield, and funeral quadriga.
The reverse is a reference to Vespasian's great victory in the Jewish War and the type was also used during the last year of his reign, of course with a different legend.

A very nice example of this type: good metal, strong portrait and a well executed reverse. Note the dot at the end of the Obv legend. I've always preferred the style of Titus' denarii which feature the dot.

Marsyas was a Silen who found the flute which Athene had invented some times before. But when Athene saw in a mirror how awful her face was looking when playing the flute, she throw it away with a curse. Marsyas then learned to play the flute better as everyone else so that he challenged Apollo to a contest. The Muses should be the arbiters. But in this contest Apollo outsmarts Marsyas by singing to the cithara what Marsyas was not able to do with his flute. So he lost the contest and Apollo hung him up in a tree and let him skinned by a Skyth alive. His blood or the tears of the Muses then became the river Marsyas.

Suebian_warrior.jpg
Suebian warrior (Germanic tribes) circa 1st century A.D.337 viewsThe Suebi occupied more than half of Germany, and were divided into a number of distinct tribes under distinct names. In his Germania Tacitus mentions the Semnones as being "the oldest and noblest of the Suebi". One of the most distinguising features of the Suebic people was the so called 'Suebic knot', which is also seen on this specific model. According to Germania by Tacitus, the Suebian warriors combed their hair back or sideways and tied it into a knot, allegedly with the purpose of appearing taller and more awe-inspiring on the battlefield. Tacitus also reports that the fashion had spread to neighboring Germanic tribes among the younger warriors, while among the Suebians, the knot was sported even by old men as a status symbol, which "distinguishes the freeman from the slave", with the most artful knots worn by the most wealthy nobles.

Scale of this model: 75mm (1/24)

A coin which is considered by some as part of Vespasian's IVDAEA CAPTA series. Here Victory is placing a wreath on a military standard, 'Victory crowning the successful arms of Rome'. The type can be better interpreted as a general 'Victory' type.

One of my favorite coins.

Baal or Zeus (Interpretatio Graecia) on Cilician Stater of Satrap Mazaios335 viewsCirca 361-334 B.C. AR Stater (10.88g, 24mm, 5h). cf. SNG Levant-106; SNG Paris-. Ex Ponterio and Associates Sale No. 84, November 1996, lot 141. Ex Stacks Bowers and Ponterio Sale No. 172, November 2012, lot 11680. Ex Pars Coins.

The depiction of Phoenician-Canaanite god Baal on Cilician coinage suggests the preeminence of his cult in Tarsos. He is shown enthroned, most probably on Mount Zaphon. The symbols corn-ear/barley and grapes suggest Baal’s capacity as a god involved in the seasonal cycles of life and death, or a more specific reference to Cilicia’s fertile plains. The iconography of this late coinage is also a syncretic mixture of other cultures, including Greek. The treatment of the god’s body gives us a hint of the extent of influence of Hellenic culture exerted in Eastern Asia Minor long before Alexander’s conquest, and it is said that Baal could be equated with Zeus in the Greek context. After the conquest of Alexander III of the East, Mazaios was appointed governor of Babylon. The new coinage of Alexander was strongly influenced by Mazaios’ pre-Alexandrine coinage (the Zeus Aetophoros commonly found on the reverses of his tetradrachmai is a direct descendant of this). The reverse depicts the City’s Emblem and clearly has an underlying meaning now lost to us. Some say it symbolizes the victory of Day over Night, while others suggest military conquest and subjugation of the enemies by the Persian Empire. Marvin Tameanko has persuasively argued (see Celator, Jan. 1995, pp. 6-11) that the kneeling bull (without the lion) is symbolic of Zeus, as attested on scores of later Greek and Roman coins; and the lion is symbolic of the supreme god Baal of the Cilicians. This concludes the lion-over-bull motif on this coin delivers a message that is blatantly direct and simple, if the argument put forward is to be believed.

From Numiswiki:
"Having to contest the crown with his competitor Vitellius, whom he three times defeated, Otho was vanquished in his turn at the battle of Bedriacum and rather than be the coccasion of further bloodshed in civil war, he preferred making the sacrifice of his life, and with a frimness wholly unlooked for from so effeminately luxurious a character, deliberately slew himself with his own hand. He died on the 16th of April 69 AD, in the 37th year of his age, having reigned only ninety-five days."

This type was struck in Kremnitz (formerly Körmöcbánya, Hungary, now Kremnica, Slovakia) by Veit Mülstein, oberkammergraf, in 1470-1471 (per Pohl) or 1468-1470 (per Huszár & Unger, although these dates do not entirely coincide with Mülstein's tenure at the Kremnitz mint). Said to possibly be a contemporary counterfeit by Huszár.

Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 6.

The substitution of the letter E for the letter A in the word PATROn is not described in Huszár (although depicted there, and in Pohl), nor depicted in Unger or Réthy. Mülstein also made this substitution in another emission bearing this privy mark.

PROVIDENTIA, foreseeing, especially of the emperor, a so-called emperor's virtue in the emperor's cult. 'Monarchy, in fact, is Providence', Charlesworth. As legend it appears first under Tiberius, showing the Altar of Providence. Under Hadrian the idea of PROVIDENTIA DEORUM (Divine Providence) begins to be symbolized as the foresight of the gods.

Head of young Herakles right in lion-skin headdress, paws tied at neck. / ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡOΥ Zeus left seated on a backless throne, eagle in right hand, scepter held in left hand, pellet under throne.
Price 2990; Le Rider Pl. 1, 1 (same obverse die); Newell Tarsos 1 (Newell’s Officina A, dies III/5). Tarsos mint 333/2 BC.
(25 mm, 17.22 gm, 2h)

This coin bears what is variously described as a pellet (Newell), or globule (Price), beneath the throne on which Zeus is seated, with no other mint control marks. It is from the first emission (Newell Tarsos 1) of Alexander tetradrachms from Tarsos, which is now understood to have been the mint from which Alexander the Great produced the first coins of what were to become his distinctive standard type. It comes from the third obverse die made for the type and dates to 333 BC, effectively amongst the first ‘Alexanders’ to be struck. Such being the case, this coin was probably minted in the period Alexander the Great was resident in the city and certainly preceding his advance to the Battle of Issos in November 333 BC.

Acquired from Glenn W. Woods, February 2005.

A 'rustic idyll' reverse that is part of an agrarian themed issue of types struck in 77-78. Peace and prosperity was the dominant theme here. One (far-fetched?) theory puts forward the idea that the sow and piglets represents the X legion based in Judaea because the pig was their legionary symbol. I believe this is stretching a connection too much.

Artistically rendered and very pleasing to the eye with nice toning.

This coin, without any doubt, is the most beautiful issue that I have ever owned. It looked to have been cut from a pidgeon's-blood ruby, rather than struck from metal. I sold it to a very descerning Canadian collector a few years ago for an ungodly price. The money seemed good at the time...but in retrospect, I wish that I had kept it for my own.... Sad but true.
