hadfour.jpg
Hadrian RIC-0541 Fouree8 viewsRome mint, AD late 121-123, Group 3.

This denarius is actually a fourée - a base-metal coin plated with silver. The silver has partially worn away revealing the darker base metal.

IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, Laureate bust right, drapery on far (left) shoulder (RIC bust type A2).

PM TRP COS III, Roma seated left on pile of arms, holding long scepter with last hand, victorious (small statue of Victory) in right.

2.7 g; 19.1 mm dia; 5h.

This type was likely intended to portray the statue of Roma that was to be installed in the new massive Temple of Venus and Roma (Templum Veneris et Romae). The boundary (pomerium) of the temple had been laid out in AD 121, though the temple was not completed until circa 135. The plans for this temple were reportedly drawn up by Hadrian himself and were subsequently criticized by the Greek architect Apollodorus who thought the statues were too large for the temple. He was reportedly put to death as a result of this criticism. Unlike in other dual temples, the two goddesses were in separate cellae which were placed back to back. Roma faced West (and therefore faced the forum).

The temple aroused the wonder of Constantius II during his visit to Rome in 356 and was probably the biggest temple, and only decastyle or ten pillar-fronted temple, in the city. According to Platner, the temple was 145 meters long by 100 meters wide. The pillars were 1.8 meters in diameter and the entire roof was gilt. It was made of concrete with a facing of travertine. It sat immediately to the north of the via Sacra between the Forum and the Flavian Amphitheatre (Coliseum) and reportedly necessitated the relocation of the Colossus Neronis slightly closer to the Coliseum.

haddupannona.jpg
Hadrian RIC-0161 Dupondius Annona8 viewsRome mint, AD 118, Group 1.

IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, Radiate nude bust right with trace of drapery on far (left) shoulder.

PONT MAX TR POT COS II, S-C, Annona standing left, holding grain ears over modius in right hand, cornucopia in left, [prow at feet to right]. ANNONA AVG in exergue.

12.2 g; 27 mm dia; 6h.

This coin was issued in AD 118, likely around the time of Hadrian's post-accession return to Rome. It was struck at the same time as the FORT RED and CONCORDIA sestertii. It celebrated the annona (the free grain distribution) of that year - Hadrian's first annona distribution - likely representing, according to Abdy, "the general enrichment of the citizens".

Hadrian RIC-0461 As Victory8 viewsRome mint, AD late 120 - April 121, Group 2a.

IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, Laureate nude bust right with hint of drapery on far (left) shoulder.

PONT MAX TR POT COS III, S-C, Victory standing right, holding our wreath in right hand and holding laurel branch in left.

10.0 g; 27x29 mm; 6h.

The Victory reverse, though not very common on Hadrian's aes coinage up to this point, must probably be considered a simple "stock" type. There had been no significant victory up to this point in Hadrian's reign.

The obverse strike is fairly significantly off-set. However, the quality of the design and engraving is very high (despite the poor condition the coin is in today). Overall it would appear to be a genuine issue, or at least struck from genuine dies.

Hadrian RIC-0236 Sestertius Libertas Restituta8 viewsRome mint, AD 119 - mid-120, Group 1a.

IMP CAESAR TRAIANVS HADRIANVS AVG, Laureate nude bust right, trace of drapery on far (left) shoulder.

PONT MAX TR POT COS III, S-C, Hadrian seated left on curule chair set on platform, right hand extended towards draped woman, who stands left on ground, holding one child and leading another. LIBERTAS RESTI / TVTA in two lines in exergue.

21.5 g; 32 mm dia; 5h.

This coin was likely struck in AD 119. The coin legend proclaims the restoration of freedom and liberty. According to RIC, the scene shows Hadrian "bestowing his protection on innocent women and children". This likely refers to the reported conspiracy that Hadrian defeated upon his return to Rome in July 118 and which resulted in the execution of four consulars for sedition. It is possible that they had been behind rumors (and possibly more) to the effect that Trajan had not truly named Hadrian his heir.

HOLE(S)
#: 1
Location (obverse): 12h
Type: round, drilled
From: reverse
Dimensions: 4.6 mm hole

NOTES
This large, but relatively thin coin was clearly carefully holed to ensure that the Emperor’s portrait hung properly. It was likely used as a pendant of some sort. There are faint traces of drilling on the inside of the hole, which goes through 2.1 mm of metal.

Holed Coin - c - Roman Provincial - Caesarea Maritima - Severus Alexander8 viewsCOIN

Issuer: Severus Alexander

Date: circa 222 - 235
Obverse: Laureate head right.
Reverse: Eagle, holding wreath with SPQR, in upraised wings.
Weight/Diameter/Die Axis: 7.7 g; 23x24 mm; 12h.
Ref: Kadman 97; Rosenberger 87/99.

HOLE(S)
#: none
Location (obverse): 12h
Type: possibly square punch
From: obverse
Dimensions: 2 x 2 mm

NOTES
This coin has chip and tear damage. It is possible, but not certain, that the damage derived from the use of a square punch in an attempt to make a hole. The crack appears to originate in a square mark that goes most of the way through the coin. The nearby edge of the coin is bent as if from a blow from the obverse. I believe that this is a failed attempt to hole a coin.

Belt Hanger - Celtic Trumpet style.8 viewsRoman military belt plate with hanger loop.

I have found no parallel for this item.
However, it is clearly a belt plate with hanger loop similar to the other items in this galley.

It appears to be in the Celtic Trumpet style which flourished from mid-2nd to mid-3rd century AD,
which is contemporary with the other hanger plates.

Diameter 16mm

This portrait of Queen Victoria was designed by William Wyon (1795 - 1851).

This coin was produced exclusively for use in Malta, but it is considered to be part of the British coinage as at that time Malta was considered more as a part of Britain than a colony. Because the cost of living was lower in Malta than in Britain it was not considered necessary to introduce the third-farthing coin into Britain itself.
