In her character as sister of Apollo, Artemis is like her brother armed with a bow, quiver, and arrows, and sends plague and death to men and animals. As Apollo was not only a destructive god, but also averted the evils which it was in his power to inflict, so Artemis at the same time cured and alleviated the sufferings of mortals.

It seems to be the depiction of a local event. We know tat Severus after his campaign against the Parthians AD 202 or 203 visited the camps in Moesia and Pannonia. At this occasion he could have visited Nikopolis too and the coin could be struck to celebrate his advent...Under Macrinus this depiction returns; there was no celebration of an advent for him, but perhaps there was another unknown reason (Pick)

The object in the r. hand of the river-god appears as a thin stick but should be a rudder; anyway it is no reed as Santini has suggested (Pick).

The term 'kyrios' is used mainly in the sacral area (see 'kyrie eleison') and appears only rarely on coins. Here 'kyriois' refers not to gods but to the emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla. The inscription is a congratulation of the city of Nikopolis to the rulers on the occasion of the elevation of Caracalla to Augustus (AMNG p.346). This type is known for Septimius and Geta too.

Pick called the object in the r. hand of the river-god a rudder. But here it is clearly a waterplant. I think this type has 2 subtypes:
subtype a with the urn within or above the groundline and a typical waterplant, and
subtype b with the urn under the groundline and a waterplant looking more like a rudder
Here it is obviously subtype a. But look at my other coins of this type!

Svoronos, who has described this coin first, interprets the child correct for sure as Ploutos. We have to see the goddes possibly as the same personification which is named EVPOCIA on coins of Hierapolis in Phrygia. It should be noted that the title EVPOCIARXHC occurs in our region, in Odessos and Tomis, too.
There is another similar type, AMNG 1866 (2 ex. in Paris and Mandl). Pick writes: It is possible, that the small Ploutos on these two coins was overlooked!

Pick writes:"the left on a tree-stump from which a lizard(?) is jumping to him." But on this coin it is rather a branch with small round fruits.
Pat Lawrence (in 'The Pontianus and Agrippa Dies for Macrinus and Diadumenianus at Nicopolis ad Istrum"): Apollo Sauroktonos, so labeled by Pick (and Taf. XIV, 35) and earlier, though Postolakas at Athens: Achilles Postolakas, Catalogue of the Ancient Coins of Regions, Nations, Cities and Kingdoms, National Numismatic Museum, 1872, no.847, is at pains to describe what he sees: "...to one side and the other of Apollo, naked, stg. r., bending his l. knee, having his head laureate and holding with his r. hand a twig (or branch) slanting downwards, placing his raised l. hand on the little tree, stripped of its branches, stand in front of him." He, too, doubted wether we may read the elements between Apollo's torso and the tree trunk as a leaping lizard. Just as the 'Medici' Aphrodite of Agrippa's engraver is comically misconstrued, so is his Apollo Sauroktonos.

scarce, VF, green patina
From Forum Ancient Coins, thanks!

Because the river-god here is holding not reed but grain-ears and poppy and there is no urn below him, I think it is not a river-god but the personification of the fertile landscape around the river.

This is the type of the Hercules Defensor reverse in Rome and, apart from the bow, the Hercules of the Di Auspices coins, very probably representing those statues at Leptis Magna. It even may have appealed to Pollenius Auspex in that connection. (Pat Lawrence)

Reminiscent of the type of Eros reclining r. on lion's skin (?), holding torch almost horizontally beneath him, known at Nicopolis for Caracalla Caesar and Julia Domna, AMNG 1468 and 1489, pl. XVI.4. There, however, one of Eros' wings is clearly visible above him. I'm not sure Eros is meant under Commodus too, since the all-important wing isn't visible. (Curtis Clay)

Where did I read that the Caracalla Eros Æ21 (Caesar) is as Eros also known elsewhere where Eros is playing Herakles, and is here sleeping as a very weary Herakles from all his Labors? So both answers may be true, or the wing (given Commodus's die engraver) might just not show. (Pat Lawrence)

The type probably goes back - like the related types of the Seleucids and the tetradrachms of Magnesia in Ionia - to a statuary model; ... On coins of imperial time the typus occurs only rarely. Most similar to our type he is depicted on a coin of Ilion. A particularity of the coin of Nikopolis is that here the altar stands in front of the god (Pick).
