EX; FORVM Ancient Coins.
Lifetime Issue! Signed by the artist!(?) The K behind Herakles ear had traditionally been identified as the signature of the artist. Matt Kreuzer, however, believes the K (the Greek numeral 20) was used c. 325 B.C. to introduce the Attic drachm to Miletos by indicating either that 20 of these was equal to a gold stater, or that one of these drachm was equal to 20 of the 3 to 4 gram bronzes circulating at the time.

GREEK, Egypt, 420 - 380 BC, AR Tetradrachm (Athens owl imitative)290 viewsObv:– Head of Athena right, droopy eye, crested helmet with olive leaves and bent-back palmette, wire necklace, round earring, hair in parallel curves.
Rev:– AΘE, right, owl standing right, head facing, erect in posture, olive sprig and crescent left, all within incuse square;
Minted in Egypt from . B.C. 420 - 380.
Reference:– cf. SNG Cop 31 ff., SGCV I 2526 (Athens),
ex-Forum. From the Harald Ulrik Sverdrup Collection. Ex CNG. From a small hoard of 5 Athenian and 4 Athenian imitative issues.

Athenian tetradrachms with this droopy eye and bent back palmette have been identified as Egyptian imitative issues because they are most frequently found in Egypt and rarely in Greece.

Early in his reign the Egyptian Pharaoh Hakor, who ruled from 393 to 380 B.C., revolted against his overlord, the Persian King Artaxerxes. In 390 B.C. Hakor joined a tripartite alliance with Athens and King Evagoras of Cyprus. Persian attacks on Egypt in 385 and 383 were repulsed by Egyptian soldiers and Greek mercenaries under the command of the Athenian general Chabrias. Perhaps these coins were struck to pay the general and his Greek mercenaries.

The metal did not fill the die completley on the obverse resulting in the rough flat high area near Athena's temple. A test cut on the reverse was filled with pitch in antiquity.

Extremely rare. RIC 66a is based on the B.M. coll. but not such coin is listed in the BMCRE vol. II later published, except a footnote questioning: "does the rev. legend .... occur with this reverse type?" Hence Ian Carradice omitting it from his thesis written in late '70's. At this moment I can only confirm the specimen from Leu 83 lot 751 struck from the same dies.

Weight : 3.486gms. Ex FORVM.

This coin commemorates the Roman advance into Scotland which saw the beginning of construction of the Antonine Wall, running across the central belt from the Clyde Estuary in the west to the Forth Estuary in the east. Since Antoninus had already taken the title “Imperator” on his adoption by Hadrian, he was hailed Imperator for the second time after this victory in Britain which was possibly engineered simply in order to give the new emperor military prestige.

Märkl states in his work "The Imperial Mints during the Reign of Claudius II. Gothicus and their Issues" that RIC attribute these coins wrongly to Milan (or Gallic mint) but they are in fact from Tarraco. No two mints in empire were allowed to strike same issue. Tarraco mint should have made "DIVO CLAVDIO GOTHICO" but this coin has only short (Siscian) legend: "DIVO CLAVDIO". Two known exemplars with short legend are mentioned by Märkl.

Unusually nice condition and portrait style for the Alexander-in-Elephantskin type. Wear ordinarily obscures the Ammon horn which here is visible through the skin headdress. Unusual type that appears to conform to post-260BC weight categories but lacks central depressions, a bit of a conundrum in this type.

Ariarathes VII was the nephew of Mithradates VI Eupator of Pontus and a hapless pawn in the developing power struggle of his uncle with Bithynia and later Rome to control Asia Minor. After rebuffing Mithradates VI's 'advice and assistance' the armies of Mithradates and Ariarathes met prepared for battle. At this point Mithradates called for an unarmed discussion meeting with Ariarathes in the middle ground of the battlefield. In front of the two assembled armies, Mithradates drew a concealed blade and slit his nephew's throat, thus avoiding battle and clearing the way for a new puppet, his stepson, to be appointed ultimately as King Ariarathes IX.

Antiochus VI was the son of Alexander Balas and Cleopatra Thea and daughter of Ptolemy VI of Egypt. He was nominated in 145 BC by the general Diodotus Tryphon in opposition to Demetrius II. He did not actually rule and served only as the general's pawn. In 142 BC, Diodotus deposed and succeeded him.
