Alexander Jannaeus (Yehonatan) (103-76 B.C.E.)Hendin (4th ed.) 475; Hendin (5th ed.) 1146; Meshorer TJC Group R; Meshorer AJC Group G.

AE Prutah; beveled flan with legend on beveled side; .2.30 g., 14.24 mm., 0°

Obv.: Paleo-Hebrew legend in four lines within wreath:

הודים

Yehonatan Kohen Gadol v’Hever h’Yehudim = Yehohanan [the] High Priest and the Council of the Jews
Rev.: Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons.

Meshorer wrote of the cursive style on this type, "The letters appear is if they were written with pen and ink. They are schematic, elongated, oblique, and very small. Some are so minute as to be little more than points. Although small, the shapes of the letters are simple and quite legible. The inscription is mostly complete and contains no errors."

AE Prutah; beveled flan with cornucopia on beveled side .2.18 g., 14.07 mm., 180°

Yehonatan Kohen Gadol v’Hever h’Yehudim = Yehonatan [the] High Priest and the Council of the Jews.

Rev.: Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons.

Meshorer notes that the legend on Hendin 1144/TJC Group Q coins contain many errors. On this coin the legend errors are: (1) KH/כה instead of KHN/כהן; and (2) YHYM/יהימ instead of YHWDYM/יהודימ. Meshorer also notes that the article H/ה (= the) is often missing. On this coin it is missing before KHN/כהן.

This coin has the following affinities with pre-Jannaeus types, which suggests that it was issued very early during the priesthood of Jannaeus: (1) The letter He = H/ה in the second line and in its first appearance in the fourth line is in the old style, which is typically found on Hendin 1139/TJC Group E coins issued by John Hyrcanus I (134-104 B.C.E.), but is perhaps unrecorded on the coins of Jannaeus; (2) The style of the letter Resh = R/ר is open, which is typical of Hendin 1142/TJC Group V coins issued by Judah Aristobulus I (104-103 B.C.E.); and (3) The word GDL/גדל is written GDWL/גדול, a spelling typical of Hendin 1143/TJC Group U issued by Aristobulus, and also recorded on the majority of legend variations of Hendin 1444/TJC Group Q coins.

Hyrcanus I AE prutahHendin 457. Hasmonian Kingdom of Judaea, John Hyrcanus I AE Prutah. 135-104 BC. Archaic Hebrew text within wreath: Yehohanan the High Priest and the Council of the Jews / Double cornucopia adorned with ribbons and pomegranate between, Faded monogram to the bottom left. AJC I Group N.

Hyrcanus I really put the Hasmonean country on the map by conquering so much land around, making Judaea the biggest it has ever been, larger then during the reign of King Solomon.

This type could have been struck during the reign of his mother, Salome Alexandra, as queen, 76-67 BC, or during his reign as king or ethnarch. Some scientists think that this type has been struck under Alexander Jannaeus at the end of his reign. Usually this type is crude with unreadable letters and incomplete legends.

extremely rare, F+, dark green patina

Pick: The inscription on the wreath is certainly to be understood as a congratulation or homage to the emperors; since the coin is struck under the governor Ovinius Tertullus, so perhaps the appointment of Caracalla as Augustus can be seen as the presumption. - The designation of emperors as kyrioi is not otherwise found on European coins, but it can be found on indeterminate coins from the time of M. Aurelius on coins of Kaisareia in Cappadocia and on Alexandrians of Gallienus.

RIC 700 (R2). BMC p. 7 †. RSC 275. BNC -.
Ex Private Collection.

A very rare variant of the oak wreath type struck for Vespasian in 74. The much more common variants of this type have SPQR within the oak wreath. Alternately, here we have the legend OB CIVES SERVATOS around the wreath: OB CIVES above; SERVATOS below. This variant is so rare Mattingly citing Cohen in BMCRE stated in a footnote that this type needed verification. Curiously, in the RIC concordance with the first edition, this type is listed as old RIC 17 'Unverified: plated hybrid?' (again citing Cohen) without a new corresponding RIC number even though it is in the catalogue as RIC 700 with no such disclaimers. My example possibly has evidence of being plated; however, the flaking and cracking on the surface could just be due to preservation issues, the style is consistent with official denarii, and it is a double die match with the similarly worn RIC plate coin which shows no signs of plating. Additionally, Curtis Clay has an example from different dies that is solid silver.

The corona civica was originally a military honour bestowed upon a Roman who had saved a fellow citizen's life in battle. It was one of the greatest public honours. In the imperial era the honour developed from a coveted military decoration into an imperial emblem granted by the Senate to the emperor. The wreath was made of oak leaves and is sometimes called a corona quercea after the common name for the oak. The Wreath was awarded to Vespasian by the Senate for rescuing the Roman people from civil war and bringing about peace.

- RIC 131 (R), BMC 82, RSC 323a

Reka Devnia hoard, recording only 3 specimens with ravens and the dolphin and 24 specimens of the regular type with only the dolphin. The dolphin, ravens, laurel and tripod are all symbols of Apollo. His most famous attribute is the tripod, the symbol of his prophetic powers. It was in the guise of a dolphin that Apollo brought priests from Crete to Delphi, explaining Apollo's cult title "Delphinios" and the name of the town. He dedicated a bronze tripod to the sanctuary and bestowed divine powers on one of the priestesses, and she became known as the "Pythia." It was she who inhaled the hallucinating vapors from the fissure in the temple floor, while she sat on a tripod chewing laurel leaves. After she mumbled her answer, a male priest would translate it for the supplicant.

This is not only a rare, but a very historical coin. Meshorer: " Of special interest is a type of coin...inscribed in Greek 'In the time of Vespasian, in Caesarea, Year 14 (of Nero)', indicating that already at this early stage in his life, when Vespasian was still an imperial legate in the Roman army, coins were issued with his name. This fact substantiates the story related both by Josephus and Sueton, namely that the people of Judaea foretold, while Nero was still reigning, that Vespasian would be proclaimed emperor of Rome.'
