Aes Grave Sextans Circa 269-266 BCThe sextans was an Ancient Roman bronze coin produced during the Roman Republic valued at one-sixth of an as (2 unciae). The most common design for the sextans was the bust of Mercury and two pellets (indicating two unciae) on the obverse and the prow of a galley on the reverse. Earlier types depicted a scallop shell, a caduceus, or other symbols on the obverse.

reverse on coins of Gallienus
Surface find, Caesarea Maritima 1977
J. Berlin Caesarea Collection
This coin commemorates the mythological figure of Cadmus on his quest for his sister, Europa, founding the city of Thebes as a colony of ancient Phoenicia-Tyre in the place where the sacred cow lay down. I love this coin for its connection to ancient mythology and history. Stevenson's Dictionary of Roman Coins gives an excellent description of this same reverse for a coin of Gallienus, on page 825v-drome

Schjöth 120, Hartill (2007) 9.1, Fisher’s Ding 417Xin Dynasty. Wang Mang (7 23 A.D.)
50 cash (cast bonze), 7-14 A.D, 27 mm.
Obv: Da Quan Wu Shi.
Rev: Blank.
Wang Mang was the regent for the last two infant emperors of the (western) Han Dynasty who usurped the thrown and founded the Xin Dynasty (meaning New Dynasty), of which he was the only emperor. He was a radical visionary reformer, but his reign resulted in chaos and rebellion.
Wang Mang’s reforms of the currency began in 7 A.D., and included the introduction of the Da Quan Wu Shi, with a nominal value of fifty. In 9 A.D. he introduced an impossibly complex system involving tortoise shell, gold, silver, six round bronze coins, and a reintroduction of the spade money in ten denominations. The Da Quan Wu Shi (= large coin fifty) was the largest denomination within “The Six Coins” series of fiduciary round coins. The public rejected this fiat coinage, and secretly continued to use the former Wu Zhu coins, despite an imperial decree threatening exile to those caught using the former coinage. In 14 A.D. the “Six Coins” were abolished and replaced by new round coins (the Huo Quan).
