053. 2'nd Jewish (bar Kokhba) Revolt.Zuz (denarius), attributed to Year 3 (134-35 AD).
Obverse: (Shim'on) / Bunch of Grapes.
Reverse: (For the Freedom of Jerusalem) / Lyre with three strings.
3.19 gm., 18.5 mm.
Mildenberg #205.19 (this coin); Hendin #734.
This coin likely started out as a denarius of one of the Roman emperors between Vespasian and Hadrian. Many coins of the Second Jewish Revolt show traces of the earlier Roman coin. This coin is no exception, and traces of the previous coin can be seen on the obverse in and around the bunch of grapes.
The bunch of grapes on the obverse is an ancient symbol of blessing and fertility. As such it occasionally appears on ancient coins of other areas besides this series. Given the messianic nature of the Bar Kokhba revolt, the bunch of grapes takes on added significance because in Jewish prophetic literature, grapes (and the vine or vineyard) are often symbolic of the restoration of Israel, or even symbolic of Israel itself.
The lyre on the reverse is associated with temple worship, as are trumpets, which are also found on coins of the Bar Kokhba Revolt. King David is mentioned as playing a lyre, and there are numerous Biblical references to praising the Lord with the lyre and trumpets. (The word "kinnor," sometimes translated as "harp," is really a type of lyre.) Even today the lyre is an important Jewish symbol and the state of Israel has chosen to portray it on the half New Israeli Sheqel coin. Callimachus

The lyre was the symbol of harmony and unity among men.
This orichalcum semis (= 2 quadrantes) was in the auction of Dr. Busso Peus, date: 3 November 2004. It’s the same what the coinarchives shows. Although in RIC this coin rate is common, I think it’s a bit scarcer.

Akanthos, Macedon ObolAR Obol
Size: 9 mm Weight: .60grams Die axis: 12h
Akanthos, Macedon
390 - 382 BCE
Obverse: Laureate head of Apollo to right.
Reverse: Seven-stringed lyre, around which AKANΘION
References: British Museum Collection, object number 1947,0406.168 (online)
Notes:
- Akanthos was a colony of the Aegean Island of Andros.
- Situated on the Chalkidike peninsula, Akanthos was an important and powerful city. The city was never willing to join the Chalkidian League, 430 – 348 BCE, a federation based on Akanthos’ rival Olynthos. The Chalkidian league’s famous lyre coinage is well known, and bears the name of magistrates rather than city epithets. Yet the use of the lyre on this coin, along with the inscription AKANΘION, indicates there was at one time some significant cooperative arrangement between Akanthos and the Chalkidian League.

Hamburger suggests that this type, found 6
times in her corpus, was used in relation
to private marriage festivities. The stringed
instrument, perhaps a lyre, was used in the
procession to the house of the newlyweds.
"The single serpent might then be understood
as the house snake, Agathodaimon, bringer of
fortune to the house of the newlyweds".

Domitian struck Lycian drachms in 95, the first Lycian silver issued since the time of Claudius. They are in fine Rome mint style with a six o'clock die axis and therefore are most likely products of that mint. Surprisingly, K. Butcher and M. Ponting's analysis of the series show these drachms were struck with Greek silver at 80% fineness - a different metal and fineness than contemporary Roman denarii. Lycian drachms were of similar size to the denarius and they circulated quite widely throughout the empire.
A good Rome style portrait. Much better in hand.David Atherton
