ALEXANDER_III_AR_Drachm.JPG
Philip III Arrhidaios, 323 - 317 BC. AR Drachm struck in the name and types of Alexander III at Lampsakos, Mysia.Obverse: No legend. Head of Herakles, wearing lion-skin knotted at base of neck, facing right.
Reverse: AΛEΞANΔPOY. Zeus Aëtophoros seated facing left, right leg drawn back, feet on stool, eagle in right hand, sceptre in left; buckle in left field; Λ above Ω below throne.
Diameter: 18mm | Weight: 4.16gms | Die Axis: 7 | Cut mark above eyebrow on obverse.
Price: 1376

Alexander the Great reigned from 336 to 323 BC but this coin was struck shortly after his death, in around 323 to 317 BC under Philip III Arrhidaios.

Philip III Arrhidaios was the king of Macedonia after the death of Alexander the Great, from 323 BC until his own death in 317 BC. He was a son of King Philip II of Macedonia and a half-brother of Alexander. Named Arrhidaios at birth, he assumed the name Philip when he ascended the throne.
As Arrhidaios grew older it became apparent that he had mild learning difficulties. Alexander was very fond of him, and took him on his campaigns, both to protect his life and to ensure he would not be used as a pawn in a challenge for the throne. After Alexander's death in Babylon, Arrhidaios was proclaimed king by the Macedonian army in Asia, but he was a mere figurehead, and a pawn of the powerful generals, one after the other.

re behind him a horse stg. r., head turned l.
cf. Schultz 100 (obv. only, same die), unpublished

This coin was very difficult to interprete. Because of the depiction of the male figure, nude, with parazonium,
very tall upper part of the body, the suggestion tends to Themistokles. There is another rare type of him
sacrificing before an altar, where he is depicted similarily. Themistokles is the famous heroe of Salamis who
after an ostrakismos had to flee from Athens. His former enemy the Persian king Artaxerxes I accommodated
him and made him satrap of Lampsakos and Magnesis ad Maeandrum due to his merits at Salamis.

A very valuable example from FORVM. The Sam Mansourati Collection.

Lampsakos was founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea in the 6th century B.C. Soon afterward it became a main competitor of Miletus, controlling the trade roots in the Dardanelles. During the 6th and 5th centuries B.C., Lampsacus was successively dominated by Lydia, Persia, Athens, and Sparta; Artaxerxes I assigned it to Themistocles with the expectation that the city supply the Persian king with its famous wine. When Lampsacus joined the Delian League after the battle of Mycale in 479 B.C., it paid a tribute of twelve talents, a testimony to its wealth.

LAN erroneous for LAM, but there are some open questions too: KOI seems to be erroneous for KAI, magistrate APOLLONITOS couldn't be found until now.

PRIAPOS was born by Aphrodite in Lampsakos/Mysia. Therefore Lampsakos was the centre of warshipping of Priapos. Here his depiction was more like Dionysos who was said to be his father.

about EF, a small scratch before the crescent, wonderful style, a Hellenistic artwork! For sure one of the 5% most beautiful specimens of this type!

Now this gem has its place for some years at my home. Curious where it will go then!

According to Thompson Lampsakos was the biggest mint of Lysimachos in Asia Minor with c. 150 different obv. dies. When Amphipolis began about 288 BC its extensive coinage the issue from Lampsakos decreased.
