Maximian_unlist.jpg
032 - Maximian (286-305 AD), Antoninianus - RIC 404, 407 (hybrid unlisted in RIC)Obv: IMP MAXIMIANUS AVG, radiate bust left in imperial mantle, holding globe.
Rev: PAX AVGG, Minerva standing left, leaning on shield, holding olive branch and spear.
Minted in Lugdunum (C in exe, * in left field) 292-294 AD.

This coin is a hybrid between RIC 404 (as above but without the * and C(?)) and 407 (with * and C) and not listed in RIC. However Bastien lists this coin (vol 7, nr 488) with five examples cited. Not a very pretty coin but somehow interesting anyway as it turned out. Thanks to Jochen and maridvnvm of the FORUM´s classical numismatics discussion board for the info.

064 - Septimius Severus, denarius, Ancient imitation?Obv:– L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP II, laureate head right
Rev:– AEQVIT AVG TR P COS II, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia

I will freely admit that I bought this coin hoping that it would be a scarce Laodicea type combined with a hybrid reverse of Pertinax. Having discussed the coin with Curtis Clay he is of the opinion that :-
"I think I would consider the coin to be an ancient imitation.
The style is not right for the IMP II series.
That exact rev. type of Pertinax is known on authentic Alexandrian denarii of SS, but there with the obv. legend is that of 193 (probably the coin BMC and RIC refer to as hybrid), and again the coin is in different style."

I am still happy with my purchase and it is still an interesting coin. Perhaps one day I will be able to find out some more about it.

065 - Julia Domna denarius - 607aObv:– IVLIA DO-MNA AVG, Draped bust right, hair tied in bun behind
Rev:– AEQVITAS II, Aequitas standing left holding scales and cornucopia.
Minted in Alexandria. A.D. 194
Reference:– BMCRE Page 86. RIC IV 607a. RSC 3a.

BMCRE, RIC and RSC all refer to the same coin in Vienna which is queried as being plated.

Curtis provided this additional information however:-
"Bickford-Smith, Mint of Alexandria, unpublished typescript (1993), p. 91: four specimens known to him, in Vienna, Berlin, Basel, and Tbilisi.

BMC and RIC refer to the Vienna specimen, which they are wrong to classify as a plated hybrid: it is a regular, solid-silver coin."

Vienna also has a similar denarius with bust laureate, draped r.

These are mules from an old rev. die: the lack of P P in the obverse legend means that it should have been added to the rev. legend, but these coins are from one or more rev. dies that had been engraved before that change was made, and were later erroneously coupled with at least two of the new obv. dies without P P.

Crawford 341/4, ROMAN REPUBLIC, "Mule" Titia/Pansa AE AsRome, The Republic

AE As (10.78g; 27mm)

Obv: Head of Janus w/rounded beard (Pansa obv die).

Rev: Prow r; palm-branch behind prow; Q●TITI above (Titius rev die)

Reference: Crawford 341/4d; Hannover 2942 (dies); c.f. Hannover 2974 (Pansa)(obv die)

Provenance: Savoca 12 (22 Jan 2017) Lot 457

Hybrid mule of rare Q. Titius reverse with a "rounded-beard" Janus obverse of Pansa. See Hannover 2974 (Pansa) for only other known example bearing this reverse control mark.

Circa 90 B.C., during the time of the Social War, Q. Titius and C. Vibius C.F. Pansa were co-moneyers at Rome. The Social War was a civil war between Rome and her Italian allies who had broken-away in a demand for citizenship rights. It was a time of massive coinage output by the Rome mints, likely to pay the costs associated with the conflict. Not much is known of TItius or Pansa. TItius is the only member of the TItia gens for whom coins are known. Pansa was possibly the father of the later Pansa who struck coins in 49 BC and became consul in 43BC.

Some of TItius’ silver coin types feature a male head with long, pointed beard. There is speculation that the head represents Mutinus Titinus, another name of the minor god Priapus, and a naming pun for Titius. His AE asses overwhelmingly depict a Janiform head with atypical, long. pointy beard, resembling the head shown on his silver coins.

On the other hand, obverses of Pansa’s AE asses overwhelmingly depict Janus with a more traditional, curled beard. The fact that the obverse styles of Pansa’s and TItius’ contemporaneous asses are so different supports the argument that the pointy-bearded character on TItius’ coins represents someone other than Janus.

The fact that Titius and Pansa served as moneyers at the same time is evidenced by occasional mules of Titius’ pointy-bearded obverses with Pansa reverses and vice versa.

An online search of acsearch, Coin Archives and Coins of the Roman Republic Online yielded only four auction sales and one ANS example of this rare reverse, and all of them were paired with a pointy-bearded obverse. However, the Kestner Museum Hannover has a similar mule that may be a double die match to my coin (see Berger, Hannover 2942). Further, the Kestner Museum has a Pansa AE As in their collection with an apparent obverse die match to my mule (see Berger, Hannover 2974).

Are these Titius/Pansa mules indicative of particular administrative practices at the mint?

One possibility is that obverse dies, which contained no legends, were mixed freely among the two moneyers; however, the overwhelming conformity of pointy-bearded TItius asses and curled-beard Pansa asses refutes this suggestion. The mules are too scarce to suggest any freewheeling intent.

Second possibility is that all dies, TItius’ and Pansa’s, were controlled by a central mint repository which assigned the dies to teams at the commencement of work shifts and likely collected them for security at the end of work shifts. Care was certainly taken to pair pointy-bearded Janus obverses with TItius reverses, as evidenced by the super-majority of extant coins. Mistakes were inevitably made. How long it took the mint to correct such mistakes is unclear. The fact that my collection and the Kestner Museum share a mule from the same dies suggests that a good number of coins were made by those dies. The fact that Kestner Museum also has the same Pansa obverse die paired with a correct Pansa reverse proves that die combination was a likely mistake; whether the correct pairing was made at a previous work shift, at a subsequent work shift when dies were reassigned, or in the middle of the same work shift cannot be determined – the coins are not in such great condition that die states can be easily compared.

Third, the mules suggest that TItius’ and Pansa’s coins were struck at the same mint and perhaps in the same workshop by different striking teams. I don’t think it’s possible to extrapolate whether the dies were controlled on a workshop basis vs. a full mint basis.

References: Crawford 407/2; Sydenham 903; Hosidia 1.

Provenance: Ex Kunker Auction 257 (10 Oct 2014), Lot 8422.

This type was struck in a serrate and plain-edged variety. Obverse and reverse styles differed on both varieties. Additionally, there are very rare hybrids, with the style and legend variety of one type on edge style flans of the other. The hound on the coins of C. Hosidius are shown in two distinct styles: on the non-serrate coins, in an ultra-slim, almost linear body style; and on the serrate coins, in a more lifelike, heavier style. In both cases, the hunting scene suggests that this dog should be a Laconian or Vertragus hound. Indeed, the dog is slim on both types, with a short haired tail – not a bushy tail, like a Molossian.

By looking at this coin accuracy wasn't important to ancient counterfeiters. The obverse is a Domitian as Caesar whereas the reverse is taken from a coin of his brother Titus as Augustus.

A similar hybrid is listed in Roman Silver Coins as Domitian 590b with slightly different inscriptions.

This is a challenge for all but the cognoscenti. Notwithstanding its superficially shabby appearance, it qualifies as the best of its type because that is what it is, the best of four examples known. To appreciate this it is necessary to understand the background to the coin. This imitative hybrid was unknown to numismatists until 2001 when four examples were discovered in the East Arachosia (Quetta) Hoard in southwestern Pakistan, to date the only known find of the type. Three of the four examples, in lesser condition than this one, Miller (CH 10.275) 180 and 182 & 183 are now in the collection of the ANS as noted by van Alfen in AJN 14 (2002) p. 183-186 & pl. 29, #6, #7 & #8 (ANS 2002 acquisitions #460- #462; accession numbers: 2002.19.3 - 19.5). This fourth specimen is the only example outside of a museum collection.

Very rare
This very rare hybrid coin is one of the rariest coins of Herennius Etruscus, only one was found in Dorchester hoard. Unusual abbreviation in reverse legend: MARs PROPugnatori - Mars the Champion or Defender.

Hungary. Béla IV (1235-1270). Huszár 266, Toth-Kiss 22.11.1.1, Unger 160, Réthy I 226, Frynas 17.38, Lengyel 18/30, Adamovszky 313, Rengjeo 38, Mimica 38, Dimnick-Dobrinić 4.1.6Hungary. Attributed to Béla IV (1235-1270) by Toth-Kiss and Lengyel, and to András/Andreas II (1205-1235) by Huszár, Unger, Frynas, Adamovszky and Gyöngyössy (who states that the type was issued 1215-1222). The reattribution is based on a study of hybrid denárs (per Toth-Kiss at pp. 30-31).

AR denár (average .56 g., 13.1-13.3 mm.); .32 g., 12.49 mm. max, 180°

Obv: Tower above crescent above star, flanked by profiles facing left and right, pellets above.

Rev: Panther facing left under branched tree with leaves, rosette above in left field and Hebrew letter ט (tet) above in right field.

The Hebrew letter ט (tet) is probably the mark of Teka, who was a kammergraf in 1232 (under András II) and 1235-1245 (under Béla IV), per Rádóczy and Nagy.

The coins of Béla IV were issued with an average fineness of .800 and “later” .900, per Huszár at 11.

Rengjeo, Mimica and Dimnick-Dobrinić refer to this emission as a Croatian Freisacher issued in 1212-1220 in Slavonia under András II (1205-1235) and various Bans (Group IV). This attribution was initially made by Hóman in 1920, who tentatively assigned this emission to a Zagreb mint. However, the basis of this attribution has been proven to be erroneous, and the consensus among Hungarian numismatists is that the emission is Hungarian (per Metcalf [1979] at 156). Rengjeo, Mimica and Dimnick-Dobrinić do not note the presence of the Hebrew letter on the reverse.

Hungary. Béla IV (1235-1270). Huszár 267, Toth-Kiss 22.12.1.1, Unger 161, Réthy I 227, Frynas 17.39, Lengyel 18/33, Adamovszky 312, Rengjeo 39, Mimica 39, Dimnick-Dobrinić 4.2.1Hungary. Attributed to Béla IV (1235-1270) by Toth-Kiss and Lengyel, and to András/Andreas II (1205-1235) by Huszár, Unger, Frynas, Adamovszky and Gyöngyössy (who states that the type was issued before 1215). The reattribution is based on a study of hybrid denárs (per Toth-Kiss at pp. 30-31).

AR obulus (average .23 g, 10.6-10.8 mm.); .37 g., 10.83 mm. max., 180°

Obv: Tower above crescent above Hebrew letter ש/shin (per Huszár, Toth-Kiss and Lengyel) or E-shape (per Frynas), flanked by profiles facing left and right, pellets above.

Rev: Panther facing left under branched tree with leaves, Hebrew letter פ/feh-peh (per Toth-Kiss) or ט/tet (per Lengyel).above, although Huszár and Frynas do not recognize any Hebrew letter,

The Hebrew letter on the reverse is most likely a ט/tet. This is consistent with the letter appearing on the matching denár Huszár 266, is probably the mark of Teka, who was a kammergraf in 1232 (under András II) and 1235-1245 (under Béla IV), per Rádóczy and Nagy. Moreover, the פ/feh-peh is probably the mark of Fredman, who was a kammergraf in 1270-1272 under István V (1270-1272); as such, the mark is inconsistent with either Béla IV or András II.

Rengjeo, Mimica and Dimnick-Dobrinić do not note the presence of the Hebrew letters on the obverse and reverse; Dimnick-Dobrinić describes the letter on the obverse as a trefoil ornament (consistent with Frynas).

Lucius Verus Denarius - Apparent Hybrid [Not in RIC]Lucius Verus Denarius - Apparent Hybrid [Not in RIC]
The obverse legend dates this to c.Dec 164-c.Aug 165,
whilst the reverse places this at c.Summer 166-Dec 166.
No such coin is listed in RIC, but the obverse concords
with RIC 528-537, and the reverse with RIC 561-567.
An unusual hybrid variant, perhaps unofficial.

This coin is an enigma because of several reasons:
(1) The ethnic is missed. Only the names are in the legends. Therefore it is difficult to tell the mint. Referring to the style I think the coin belongs to Northern Greece, i.e. Moesia or Thrace. There are small coins from Nicopolis with Severus and Domna on the rev. with strange abbreviations like IO DO. On the other side the scrubby hairstyle of Geta reminds strongly on Marcianopolis.
(2) The legends on both sides are unclear. IMIOC GETA on the rev. is sure and means naturally CEPTIMIOC GETA. But for the missing CEPT left behind the head seems to be not enough space. May be that CEPT can be found right before Geta's head? Then the legend would be perhaps [T[IMIOC - GETA[C CEP], an unusual legend distribution at all.
(3) The obv. legend is absolutely unclear. Actually we would await Severus, and it is his portrait on the obverse. The legend could begin left behind the bust with AV K (like AV KAI CE or AV KL CE). Then on the right side should appear CEVHROC! But the remaining letters don't match! May be that the CE of CEVHROC can be found too behind the bust and is followed by VHROC in front of the bust. But that too would be a strange legend break.

Gospodin Jekov: This coin seems to be unique, possibly an error-hybrid from Markianopolis.
Igor Lasarenko (Museum of Varna): Rather not Moesia, hybrid from Asia Minor may be.

extremely rare, F, dark green patina

A remarkable coin:
(1) rev. undoubtedly from Nikopolis
(2) obv. undoubtedly Severus Alexander (who never has struck coins in Nikopolis!)
(3) but Severus Alexander has not issued coins in Nikopolis
(4) rev. Greek legend, obv. Latin legend
(5) Latin legends occur only in Deultum (for Moesia)
So this is a hybrid of an obv. from Deultum and a rev. from Nikopolis, an ancient imitation!

Marcus Antonius Polemon Pythodoros, also known as Polemon II of Pontos and Polemon of Cilicia is the only known direct descendant of Mark Antony who bares his name. Through his maternal grandmother he was a direct descendant of Mark Antony and his second wife Antonia Hybrida Minor. Antony and Antonia Hybrida were first paternal cousins. He was Antony’s second born great grandson. Through Antony, he was a distant cousin to Roman Client King Ptolemy of Mauretania and Drusilla of Mauretania. He was also a distant cousin to Roman Emperors Caligula, Claudius and Nero and Roman Empresses Valeria Messalina, Agrippina the Younger and Claudia Octavia.

Polemon II’s father Polemon Pythodoros King of Pontos died in 8 BC. His mother then married King Archelaus of Cappadocia, and the family moved to the court of his stepfather. In 17 AD Archelaus died and Polemon II and his mother moved back to Pontus. From 17 until 38, Polemon II assisted his mother in the administration of Pontos. When his mother died in 38, Polemon II succeeded her as the sole ruler of Pontus, Colchis and Cilicia.

Around 50 AD, Polemon II met the Judean princess Julia Berenice in Tiberias during a visit to King Agrippa I. Berenice was widowed in 48 AD when her second husband and paternal uncle Herod of Chalcis, died. She had two sons by him, Berenicianus and Hyrcanus. Berenice set the condition that Polemon II had to convert to Judaism before marriage, which included undergoing the rite of circumcision. Polemon II complied, and the marriage went ahead but it did not last long. Berenice left Pontus with her sons and returned to the court of her brother. Polemon II abandoned Judaism and, according to the legend of Bartholomew the Apostle, accepted Christianity, only to become a pagan again.

In 62, Nero compelled Polemon II to abdicate the Pontian throne. Pontos and Colchis became a Roman province. From then until his death, Polemon II only ruled Cilicia. He never remarried and had no children that are known.

Polemon's sister Antonia Tryphaena's Royal lineage goes all the way down to Nana Queen of Iberia, who died in 363 AD. Truly Antony may have lost the battle of Actium but won the war of genetics!
