Hawaii.jpg
Kingdom of HawaiiKM # 3

AR dime/umi keneta (± 90% AR, ±10% AE), struck 1883-1884 at the San Francisco mint. Designed by Charles E. Barber, 249,921 circulation strikes (250,000 were minted, but 79 were melted), ±2.5 grams, ±17.9 mm. 180°

Obv: KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII, bust of King Kalakaua, • 1883 • below.

Rev: UA MAU KE EA O KA AINA I KA PONO [= the life of the land is in righteousness] / • UMI KENETA [= One Dime] • around rim. ONE / DIME surrounded by wreath, crown above.

Edge: Reeded

In 1880, Hawaii's monarch, King Kalakaua, authorized a new coinage that more closely followed United States coinage. His associate Klaus Spreckels contracted the United States Mint to produce silver coins for the islands: 700,000 half-dollars, 500,000 each of quarters and silver dollars and 250,000 dimes. The total was $1 million worth of Hawaiian coins. The Hawaiian Dime was a substitute for the 12-1/2 Cent (Hapawalu) denomination specified in the original application to the U.S. government. The Hapawalu would have required specially made blanks, whereas the Dime denomination was already a standard in the American series. Six Proof Dimes were made in September 1883 at the Philadelphia Mint for inclusion in four-piece sets containing the 10c, 25c, 50c, and $1.00 denominations. 250,000 circulation strikes were struck at the San Francisco Mint (without mintmark) from November 17, 1883 through June 1884. An additional 20 Proof Dimes were made at the Philadelphia Mint in 1884, this time for inclusion in five-piece sets containing the aforementioned denominations, plus the 12-1/2c coin. On June 14, 1900 Hawaii became a territory of the United States, and Congress ordered that a majority of the Hawaiian coins be withdrawn and melted.

LT17c-1853.jpg
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1853"Minnie" around top hat, with "89" and flourishes below. Presumably the latter indicates that the engraving was done in 1889, or something important to Minnie happened that year. Could this have been a wedding gift? Did Minnie's new husband wear a top hat like that, and present her with this ... or did Minnie give it to him? We'll never know, but it's fun to speculate on. Since the best known of my Internet avatar pictures features me wearing a top hat covered with holed coins (my trademark "Holey Gold Hat"), I simply HAD to have this piece. Others wanted it, too, so a scuffle ensued. I won. Ha! As it happened, I had just sold off an 1873 with the name "Minnie" on it when I upgraded that date to a pictorial piece. Ex-eBay, spring 2012. Total number of 1853 dimes struck at all mints = 13,273,010.

LT25b-1861.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1861"RWS" with marsh scene and stork. These stork pictorials might have once been christening gifts. Not only do I live in the coastal marshlands, but a stork flew right in front of me on the day I bought this. More amazingly, it has all three of my initials in sequence! Ex-eBay. Total number of 1861 dimes struck at all mints = 2,055,500.lordmarcovan
LT27b-1863.jpg
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1863"J", "K", and "S" (or maybe I,K,S?) in monogram. Old center mount- probably was a button or cufflink.

LT36-1872.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1872"JWD" with geometric design and stork in well-executed marsh scene with flying birds in sky. Ex-eBay. As previously mentioned, I believe these "stork" themed pieces were christening gifts for new babies. Total number of 1872 dimes struck at all mints = 2,620,980.lordmarcovan

LT43-1879.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1879A" and "J" in monogram with ornamental border. KEY DATE. Rare, especially as a love token. High grade host coin, too! Came with an 1876 companion piece which had a different monogram but shared the "J" initial. That and their similar style indicate to me that they were probably from the same family and maybe were engraved by the same person. I'm not displaying that 1876 here since I already have a pictorial 1876 for this set. Ex-"seanq" (Collectors Universe). Total number of 1879 dimes struck at all mints = 14,000 (minted only at Philadelphia that year).
lordmarcovan
LT44b-1880.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1880"C", "I" (or "J"), & "L" in monogram with ornamental border. KEY DATE. Rare, especially as a love token. I found this piece in a bulk lot for only $7.50! Not long before that, I had bought a similarly monogrammed example for about $125.00. I resold the $125.00 example at cost, and kept the lucky cherrypick. Both were remarkably similar in grade. Both ex-eBay. Total number of 1880 dimes struck at all mints = 36,000 (minted at Philadelphia only).

LT45-1881.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1881"A", "H", and "W" in monogram, with flourishes. KEY DATE. Rare, especially as a love token. Ex-"Minerscoin" (Collectors Universe). Total number of 1881 dimes struck at all mints = 24,000 (minted at Philadelphia only).

LT47c-1883.jpg
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1883"PETE" on fence, with chick hatching from egg below. This nice pictorial was superbly engraved by a master craftsman. I think the symbolism of the hatching chick indicates this was once a christening gift when Pete was born. I have the same theory about the "stork" themed pieces in this set. This one has had some admirers in the past. Ex-eBay. Total number of 1883 dimes struck at all mints = 7,674,673.2 commentslordmarcovan
LT48c-1884.jpg
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1884"J.J.T." above river scene with boats and the Brooklyn Bridge. A nice companion to the 1887 "Statue of Liberty" piece in this collection, forming sort of a New York theme. Both this and the "Statue of Liberty" piece date within a year of the dedication of the landmarks they portray! A rare topical piece tied to a famous landmark. I had to fight tooth and claw to win it! Love tokens are underappreciated enough that they are usually quite affordable, but this and a few of my other important pieces did cross the $100 mark. Ex-eBay, 2011, closed for around $126.00. Total number of 1884 dimes struck at all mints = 3,930,474.1 commentslordmarcovan
LT49b-1885.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1885"WJH" in banner across inverted horseshoe. Ex-"love-tokens" (eBay). Total number of 1885 dimes struck at all mints = 2,576,187.lordmarcovan
LT50b-1886b.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1886"P. L." below lighthouse and seascape, with partial ornamental border and scroll above. Ex-"rarecoinsgallery" (eBay). Considering the technical proficiency shown in the superb engraving on this piece, it's rather surprising that the artist let his tool slip and caused the apparent flaw on the "P". Perhaps a master carved the design and the coin was kept on hand until somebody else later added the initials? Total number of 1886 dimes struck at all mints = 6,583,208.lordmarcovan
LT51b-1887.jpg
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1887"MA-MA" with Statue of Liberty scene and rope border. Like the 1884 "Brooklyn Bridge" piece in this set, this host coin dates to within a year of the opening of the landmark it portrays, and continues the New York theme. Ex-Heritage Long Beach Tokens & Medals Auction #110, Lot 29116, 09/2008. I forget the closing price, but I think it ended up being an upper two-figure price tag. It might be difficult to acquire a similar themed pictorial like that under $100 these days! The engraving on this is skilled but simple, giving it a sort of folksy, whimsical feel, and it's easy to imagine why somebody once chose this as a gift for his mother. If only we knew the rest of the story. Were they immigrants who passed the Statue of Liberty on their way to Ellis Island? Maybe not, but it's fun to think about such things. Needless to say, this piece is a sentimental favorite. Total number of 1887 dimes struck at all mints = 15,737,679.lordmarcovan
LT52-1888.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1888"Ivy De" or "Joy De"(?) in script, with parachute (!) and ornamental border. It's rather fascinating to see a parachute portrayed on a love token whose host coin was struck 15 years before the Wright Brothers ever flew! Of course the engraving could have been added years after the coin was struck, but still may date to the late 19th century. I guess the invention of the parachute must have preceded the airplane by centuries, but it is still a quirky and unusual portrayal for a love token. I can't tell if that's supposed to be a little person hanging below it or not. Ex-"engraved" (Collectors Universe). Total number of 1888 dimes struck at all mints = 7,215,655.
lordmarcovan
LT53-1889.JPG
USA, Seated Liberty dime love token, 1889"FHI" or "FHJ" in script with flourishes and fancy borders. Very intricate. Ex-"rarecoinsgallery" (eBay), 04/2008. Total number of 1889 dimes struck at all mints = 8,352,678.lordmarcovan
HGH-USA-Gold-_1_00-1889.JPG
USA, Type 3 Indian Princess gold dollar, 1889This appealing little coin represents the end of an era, as 1889 was the last year the United States Mint struck gold dollars. (REAL gold dollars, I mean- not what they call "golden" dollars now.) Gold dollars are the most commonly encountered US gold holeys. As such they were popular gifts at the time, and gold dollars were not far behind dimes in popularity as host coins for love token engraving. This one isn't a love token- just a holey- but I'm fond of it. I had several others on my hat but one year a friend wanted to buy a pair to make his wife some earrings for Christmas.lordmarcovan
