Obv: + MONETA REGIS P SCLAVONIA; A Marten left between two stars.
Rev: Patriarchal cross between sun and moon with clover, with two omega, two lis, between R – L.
cf. de Wit 3857.
The “Marderdenar” (literally “Marten denarius”) features the marten on the obverse. The pelts of martens were considered valuable trade goods, thus their an appearance on the coins of Slavonia. Slavonia had its own Ban, or dignitary, which oversaw it for the kingdom of Hungary, but Slavonia issued coinage independently. Hence, the Hungarian king Ladislaus IV has his name on the coinage, but the designs are separate from those of Hungary.

Obv. + MONETA REGIS P SCLAVONIA (irregular lettering), Marten running left, rosette of annulets above and below.

Struck in Zagreb. The emissions from the reign of Charles Robert were debased and of variable weights, and were referred to by contemporaries as "banales novi." This coin does not appear to match that description. While Rengjeo and Mimica attribute this emission to Charles Robert and Ban Nikola, Unger indicates that it is of unknown attribution but from the 14th century. Metcalf, however, states that emissions with the NE ligate, such as this coin, are found only within Nuber Type AI, varieties 1 and 2, which were only issued during the reign of Bela IV (ending 1270), in which this privy mark was used.

Obv. + MONETA.REGIS P SCLAVONI.A, Marten running left, star above and below.

Rev. Patriarchal cross, facing crowned heads below, star and crescent above, fleur-de-lis (privy mark) to sides.

Mint and dates of issue uncertain. Ban Stejpan Gutkele was commissioned by Béla IV to set up a mint at Pakrac, Croatia, in 1255. This operation was relocated to Zagreb around 1260, where a mint may have already been functioning. The tentative identification of the mint is therefore necessarily dependent upon the dates of issuance. This emission (within Nuber Type AI-II, variety 2) may have been issued as early as 1242 (per Metcalf) or 1255 (per Pohl) or 1256 (per Truhelka, Nuber & Homan); only the earliest of these dates comports with the attribution to Duke Stephen (per Rengjeo & Mimica). Despite the attribution to Gutkele, the mintage of this emission may have continued until 1270 (per Nuber via Metcalf). Struck with an average fineness of approximately .900 silver and an average weight of .972 g.
