132 - Probus - RIC 401 var - Bust Type C (Ticinum) (VIXXT)Obv:– IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG, Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen half from the back
Rev:– RESTITVTOR SAEC, Emperor standing left, holding globe and sceptre, crowned by Victory holding palm.
Minted in Ticinum (VIXXT in exe) Early Emission 2, Officina 6. A.D. 276
Reference:– RIC 401 var Bust type C (Unlisted obverse legend with this type)
It is a variant of RIC 401, with unlisted full spelling of RESTITVTOR.
This is a coin from the very beginning of the second emission of Ticinum (276 CE), before the portrait transitions to Probus proper. Coins from the later part of the emission and already much less Tacitus/Florian in likeness, while not quite 100% Probus himself.
The style is typical for that period, but these coins are scarce, so you do not see them often.

Louis XIV 1672 Prise de douze villes en Hollande.JPG
1672, Prise de douze villes en HollandeObv. Draped and cuirassed bust right LVD MAG FRA ET NAV REX PP, CHERON on bust truncation.
Rev. The King in the guise of Sol, radiating light, seated right in a heavenly chariot pulled by three horses, surrounded by clouds. Around are aerlia views of twelve towns and forts captured in Holland SOLIS QVE LABORES on scroll above central design, the names of all twelve towns/forts around.

AE63. Engraved by Charles Jean Francois Cheron. ORIGINAL STRIKE, very rare.

Charles Jean Francois Cheron (1635-1698), one of the most distinguished artists of the school of Jean Warin, was born at Nancy and was trained by his father, Jean-Charles Cheron, engraver to Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Cheron went to Rome and became engraver of medals for Clement IX and Innocent X. Cheron's style in his Roman medals is of remarkable boldness, and his medals of Pope Clement IX and of Bernini are grandiloquent and among the finest Italian medals of the period. He returned to France in 1675 and was employed by Louis XIV at the Medal Mint at Paris for about twelve years, where he contributed several medals to the medallic series of the monarch, the Histoire Metallique. His medals are considered to be in an international baroque style.

Notes: Historical issue celebrating the local Pythian Games in honor of Kabeiros at Thessalonica (not the Pythian Games at Delphi). But for this album I am sharing it for the extra-large incuse circular formation on the reverse.

While opinions long differed over the function of these "centration dimples" (or "centering divots" or "flan preparation marks") -- found on bronze coins of many Roman Provincial mints, some Ptolemaic bronzes, and a few other Greek types -- they are now generally accepted as having been using in the lathing of the flans prior to striking. The rotational marks sometimes seen inside the divots indicate they were used to center to the coin or apparatus while mechanically smoothing the flan. Whether any progress has been made in determining exactly what these apparatus looked like or how exactly they worked, I am unsure.

See Nurpetlian (NC 2018, p. 241, "central holes," & pl. 20, 17-19 [LINK]). Ex-Peter Weiß

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Weiß_(Historiker)

probably ex Bikić-Do Hoard as it was in a lot of coins all ex Weiß and two were plate coins from the hoard

Divus Antoninus, RIC (Marcus Aurelius) 1266, sestertius of AD 161Orichalcum sestertius (21.73, 31mm, 12h). Rome mint, Struck under Marcus Aurelius, AD 161.
Obv.: DIVVS ANTONINVS, bear head of Antoninus Pius facing right
Rev.: CONSECRATIO (around) S C (field) Four tiered funeral pyre or rather an ustrinum surmounted by a statue of Antoninus in a quadriga, facing. The lowest tier is hung with wreaths, the second has a door in the centre with two niches at each side with a statue in each; the third has six niches each with a statue; the fourth is hung with draperies and flanked by torches.
RIC (M. Aurelius) 1266; BMC (M. Aurelius) 872; Cohen 165; Banti (I Grandi Bronzi Imperiali II-3) 74 (31 spec.); Sear (Roman Coins & Their Values II) 5198; Foss (Roman Historical Coins) 136:15
ex Roma Numismatics; ex Künker

Minted under Marcus Aurelius in joint reign with Verus, in honour of the funeral and deification of Antoninus Pius. Traditionally the structure on the reverse is called a Funeral Pyre, but there are good arguments to believe this is in fact a stone pyramide building called "ustrinum" where the ashes were kept: see an article at BeastCoins.

Faustina Junior, RIC unlisted, Sestertius of AD 161 (Emperor's growing family)Æ Sestertius (25.86g, Ø33mm, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 161.
Obv.: FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust of Fautina Junior facing right.
Rev.: FECVND AVGVSTA (around) S C (in field), Fecunditas standing left, holding a child in her arms, two more standing left and right of her raising their right hands.
Strack 1335 (1 coll.: Naples); RIC (Aurelius) unlisted (legend corresponds to RIC 1635 and the representation to RIC 1649); Cohen: (idem with nos. 96 and 136)
ex Aeternitas Coins & Antiquities (via VCoins)

This type refers to the growing family of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Jr. The three girls represent the three surviving children (of a total of 7 born) around end of 159 to early 160: Annia Galeria Aurelia Faustina (age 14), Lucilla (12) and Fadilla (1).

Additional information from Curtis Clay through the forum discussion group: "This type commemorating the birth of a third survivng daughter usually has the legend IVNONI LVCINAE, whereas the type FECVND AVGVSTAE commemorates the birth of the next daughter about a year or so later and shows Fecunditas/Faustina holding two children in her arms while two more stand at her feet.

Strack 1335 knew a sestertius like yours in only one specimen, in Naples, but unfortunately does not illustrate the coin.

The Naples collection was stolen in 1977. Your coin is of nice quality, and has an old-collection look, lightly cleaned on the reverse. I would not be at all surprised if it is the actual Naples coin! "

The Bourton-on-the-Water Hoard was discovered in 1970 in England. The main part of this Constantinian hoard consisted of 2,707 coins and the majority were Sol issues from London and Trier. It was probably buried shortly after the coin reform which introduced the VLPP series, so circa A.D. 318-19.

Mamluk (Bahri). Salih (al-Salih Salah al-Din) (752-755 A.H. = 1351-1354 A.D.)Balog 338, Plate XIII No. 338a-b; Album 951

AE fals; Halab/Aleppo mint, dated (7)55 A.H. = 1354 A.D.; 2.71 g., 21.41 mm. max., 0°

Obv.: Solid circular line border. Field divided by two horizontal lines into three segments: سنة خمس (sunat khms/five years) / الملك الصالح (al-Malik al-Salih) / وخمسين بحلب (wakhamsin bi-Halab/fifty in Halab)

Rev.: Circle of scrolls between two circular lines. In center: bird (probably an eagle) walking to right, head turned straight back. Above the bird's back, swan-like body.

Salih was the eighth son of Muhammad I to hold office. He was installed as sultan at age 14 upon the ouster of his half-brother, Sultan Hasan, by senior Mamluk emirs. In effect, Emir Taz was the ruler of the sultanate and Salih was a figurehead sultan, although Salih did lead an army into Syria to quash a rebellion. In 1354, dissident emirs ousted Taz, toppled Salih and restored Hasan to power.

AE fals; Hamah mint, undated (2nd reign); 3.63 g., 25.36 mm. max.; 270â–«
Obv.: Circular line border. Legend in three lines: برقوق (=Barquq) / السلطان الملك (= al-Sultan al-Malik) / الظاهر بو سعيد (=Al-Zahir Abu Sa’id).

Rev.: Circular line border. Field divided by two horizontal lines into three segments/fesse: lion passant to left, tail curled back in central segment; بحماة (=bi-Hama) in upper section; ضرب (=duriba/struck) in lower segment.

Barquq, who was of Circassian origin and acquired as a slave, became the first sultan of the Mamluk Burji dynasty. A member of the faction behind the throne during the reigns of Sha'ban II's young sons, 'Ali II and Hajji II, Barquq consolidated power and siezed the throne in 1382. He was deposed in 1389 and Hajji restored as sultan. By early 1390, Barquq reclaimed his title. During his second reign, the Mongol warlord Timur invaded and defeated the Mamluks at Damascus and sacked it along with Aleppo in 1399.

Obv: Laureate head of Zeus right.
Rev: EΠI ΣIΛANOY ANTIOXEΩN / ΔM (date). Ram leaping right, head turned to look back at star above. (Aries and the Star of Bethlehem?)
Ref: McAlee 99; RPC 4269; Molnar p. 52, Fig 9 (this coin).
Prov: Ex Dr. Michael Molnar (1945-2023) Collection, acq. for $50 at a NY coin show (before 1991). CNG e-Auction 543 (1 Aug 2023), Lot 319.

Note: At some point it appears that the artificial desert patina was removed from this coin, so the surfaces appear slightly different now.

Provenance Notes: This is the very coin that reportedly inspired Michael Molnar's theory that the "Christmas Star" or "Star of Bethlehem" was an astronomical event (the conjunction of Jupiter & Aries on 17 April 6 BCE) commemorated on Roman Provincial coins of Antioch.

He first published this coin & theory in The Celator vol. 5, n. 8 (Dec 1991), this coin illustrated on p.8 [LINK]. He also published it on his popular website [ARCHIVED] & in his book, The Star of Bethlehem: The Legacy of the Magi (Rutgers: 1999), which was reprinted & translated many times (this rev. ill. on p. 52). The hypothesis received enduring enough attention to be the subject of a 2014 scholarly colloquium at Groningen University, w/ conf. proceedings published in 2015 [LINK].

Molnar's theory was also widely reported in the popular press. Among many other publications, this coin was illustrated in a 21 Dec 1999 New York Times story, “Coin May Link Star of Bethlehem to King of Planets” (actually illustrated twice, as Molnar's portrait shows him holding up this coin's plate from the book) [ARCHIVED].

See also: T. Cartwright's (2014) "Star of Bethlehem" paper on Numiswik, which gives considerably more detail on Molnar's theory & the many related coin types: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/numiswiki/view.asp?key=Star%20of%20Bethlehem

As Pekka writes the ID depends on factors I can not see in the coin. IMO an AS ,late 1rst century BC. Emporiton.
Here a catalogue of coins minted in Ampurias and Rosas (two important greek colonies in Spain until the Romans arrived and bashed them).
Unfortunately only in Spanish, but many PICS.

Nummus/Follis of JovianPurchased in London, on a business trip, from Coincraft- across the street from the British Museum. I checked out a few numismatic shops in London, including the ones I was told ‘should’ be more affordable – those were actually rather pricey. I was not too keen on dropping a couple hundred pounds in London, but I also really wanted to not leave town without getting a coin there... I eventually found the Coincraft – which I had been told in advance is the most expensive - to actually be the friendliest towards the casual, low-budget collector.Alex F
