Caracalla AE 27 Tetrassarion of Odessos 198-217 ADOBV: AVK MAV ANTWNINOC, Laureate draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind.
REV: ODHCCEITWN; The Great God of Odessos standing left, holding a cornucopia and makining an offering from a patera over a burning altar.
The coin has a great portrait of Caracalla, in this case depicted in one of his rare good moods - or perhaps it was in his youth that the coin was minted. The deity on the back has sometimes been characterized as Zeus, but to whom would he be offering a sacrifice?
Odessos was a town on the Black Sea (today's Varna, Bulgaria) which had produced coins back to the 3rd Century BC. As a city in the Roman province of Moesia it first produced coins honoring Augustus, and later in the 2nd and 3rd century AD under Commodus, Verus and the Severans. It's greatest and final output of coins were minted under Gordian III.

"Derzelas (Darzalas) was a Dacian or Thracian chthonic god of abundance and the underworld, health and human spirit's vitality, probably related with gods such as Hades"
"Darzalas was the Great God of Hellenistic Odessos (modern Varna) and was frequently depicted on its coinage from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE and portrayed in numerous terra cotta figurines, as well as in a rare 4th century BC lead one, found in the city. Darzalas was often depicted in himation, holding cornucopiae with altars by his side. There was a temple dedicated to him with a cult statue, and games (Darzaleia) were held in his honor every five years, possibly attended by Gordian III in 238 AD."quadrans

Gordian III AE26 Pentassarion of OdessosOBV: AVT M ANTGORDIANOC AVG; Confronted draped busts of Gordian, laureate, and Serapis with modius on head and cornucopia to right.
REV: ODECCEITWN ('of the Odessians'); Coiled serpent with raised head and E ('5') in field.
Moushmov 1663 (ref. Wildwinds and Moushmov on-line)
The obverse inscription is incomplete on the coin but was taken from a die match to a pentassarion in the Wildwinds database. Odessos minted a very large coinage in the time of Gordian with at least thirty known reverse types listed by Moushmov for the Gordian/Serapis Pentassarion. The coiled snake motif is great and seems to say "Don't tread on me!" though the serpent also had allusions to health in ancient times. Unfortunately the reverse was preserved at the expense of the obverse by fusing to another coin. This coin has been added to the Wildwinds database.

Greek, Mithridates VI (The Great) as HeraklesPontic Kingdom, Thrace, Odessos, Mithridates VI Megas, 120-63 BC, AR Tetradrachm in the name of Alexander the Great, struck ca. 88-86 BC.
Head of Mithridates VI (the Great) as Herakles, wearing lion's skin headdress / ΒΑΣIΛΕΩΣ ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡOΥ.
(Reverse is of Zeus seated left, legs draped, confronting eagle held on outstretched right arm and grasping lotus-tipped sceptre, ΛAK before, OΔΗ (Odessos ethnic) in exergue.)
Callataÿ Group 3; Price 1192. Odessos ca. 88-86 BC
(30 mm, 16.04 gm, 1h)
This is amongst the last of the coinages in the style of Alexander the Great to be minted. In this final incarnation the portrait of Herakles was adapted to the features of Mithridates VI the Great, to the extent that the image of Herakles is in fact a portrait of Mithridates. Comparison with his portrait on tetradrachms minted in Pontus proves this point.

Svoronos, who has described this coin first, interprets the child correct for sure as Ploutos. We have to see the goddes possibly as the same personification which is named EVPOCIA on coins of Hierapolis in Phrygia. It should be noted that the title EVPOCIARXHC occurs in our region, in Odessos and Tomis, too.
There is another similar type, AMNG 1866 (2 ex. in Paris and Mandl). Pick writes: It is possible, that the small Ploutos on these two coins was overlooked! Jochen

Usually the coins with the countermark Δ on one side carry on the other side the countermark NIKO (Howgego 553). This is the first coin I know that carries only Δ..
The fact that here the counterstamp was applied to a coin which is not yet worn out speaks for Howogego's assumption that "it may be that the coins were not worn when they were countermarked, but that the countermark allowed the coins to circulate until they were worn. Since the type of a countermark was recessed into the coin it remained visibile long after the original type of the coin had been worn flat." (Howgego, p.11)
Prof.Jekov has mailed me that it is Odessos in Thrace.Jochen

DARZALEIA were games in honour of the Great God of Odessos. This type is one of the proofs that the Great God and the Thracian god Darzelas were mixed together. In AD 238 such games took place problaby in the presence of the emperor (Pick p.528).

The type with the l. leaning bearded god is known from the small denominations of Odessos. But on these coins the god is always leaning on a rectangular base and not on a kline with feet. The depiction in the ex. is unclear too. I have never found a similar depiction. I think it is a god from the ambit of the Great God of Odessos depicted like a river-god with a 'meadow' below. But cruciate is the kline.

The Great God, Theos Megas, was the old Thracian god Darsalas or Derzelates. To honour him there were games in Odessos, the Darzaleia. In AD 238 they took place in the presence of the Emperor as it was reported on coins.

Pick writes: The obv. is the exact imitation of some Roman consecration denari, so that face, hair and beard step by step seem to be re-cut. That is the explanation too that for the reproduction of the legend DIVO SEVERO PIO instead of the usual term Theos the Latin loan word DIVUS was taken, which otherwise never occurs on coins - at least on authentic ones.

Odessos, Gordian III & Great God of OdessosObviously Gordian III as Robert stated. Obv. legend AVT KM ANT GORDIANOC and AVG below. But it is not Serapis but the Great God of Odessos! I have an article about this deity in the thread 'Mythological interessent coins'. Perhaps you take a look. You can differentiate the Great God (greek = Theos Megas) from Serapis easily by the cornucopiae he always is holding. The cornucopiae you can see at the rigt brder under the -OC of GORDIANOC.
The reverse is ODHCC - EITWN. The O you can see too. E in the left field for pentassarion. It s AMNG 2341 if the size is AE27. Only one spec. in Sofia known in AMNG, so I think it is a rare one.ecoli
