This Magnentius is from the collection of Daniel Turner (1794- 1850) who was a War of 1812 veteran. At the age of 14, Turner started his Navy career. In 1813, he was promoted to Lieutenant and joined Oliver Perry’s squadron and commanded the brig Caledonia in the Battle of Lake Erie. On September 10, 1813, Turner’s suppressive fire for Perry's flagship Lawrence was so impressive and effective, that he earned a Congressional medal and a sword from the State of New York. He eventually commanded the USS Constitution in 1839 and served in the Navy until his sudden death in 1850. His collection, which included 292 Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval, and Islamic coins, stayed in his family until it was sold at auction in 2015.

his handwritten description is pictured

The mintmark SPAR, coincidentally, is also a Navy term for a pole used to support the sail or a type of deck-- spar deck.

Ex. Bazas Hoard | Ex. Jean Elsen (Belgium) | Scarce

The last series of these Anglo-Gallic coins was likely struck under more than one Henry and they have not currently been differentiated by ruler because the legends and types are generic. However, over time, Anglo-Gallic issues suffered from regular debasement and a deterioration in workmanship, the size, weight and quality of the strike of this coin would therefore all seem to point to it being an early example.

The Bazas Hoard
This hoard was discovered in May 2004 by a builder at Bazas in south West France when he was renovating a house. Bazas was a regional centre in the middle ages. The hoard consisted of a mixture of medieval coins which had been minted in Spain, Portugal, Italy, England, the Netherlands and various French duchies. Of the 1010 coins found, 157 were gold, 300 were silver and the remainder were billon. The oldest coin was a King Jean II franc from 1360 and the rarest coin was a gold castellano from the time of Henry IV of Castile, of which only one other example is known to exist.

Medieval, England, Edward I, (1272-1307) 1 Penny.England N.D. (1272-1307) 1 Penny.

Newcastle-On-Tyne Mint.

King Edward I (1272-1307).

King Edward I was commonly known as the 'Hammer of the Scots',as he tried to take over Scotland in the turmoil that ensued as a result of the death of King Alexander III of Scotland (1249-86).

King Edward I's silver 1d. coins are the commonest English hammered coins - but not from some of the provincial mints though.

The T W on the reverse of this coin refers to Thomas Wolsey, known to posterity as Cardinal Wolsey, one of the most powerful figures at the court of Henry VIII. Although this coin is undated, the issue of Henry VIII's second coinage only began in 1526 and so, since Cardinal Wolsey died in 1530, it must have been struck between those two dates.

Richard I~0.jpg
MEDIEVAL, England, Richard I (the Lion Heart).Richard I, fought against Saladin in a struggle of epic proportions. Legend has it that when Richard's horse was killed under him, Saladin gave him one so that he would not have to fight on foot. Richard managed to recapture the coastal cities that were lost during the disastrous second crusade. But Richard failed to recapture Jerusalem, forced to return to France where his lands were under attack by the King of France, he hastily concluded a treaty with Saladin leaving Saladin in control of the city.

This coin was struck at the time of Charles Martel who defeated an Arab invasion led by Abdul Rahman at the battle of Tours in 732 AD. His army of 15,000 infantry defeated an Arab army of 60,000 cavalry, an astonishing feat for outnumbered infantry to defeat cavalry. This victory turned the tide of the Muslim invasion in western Europe. This coin was minted in Touraine, the province where the famous Battle of Tours took place.

John was King of England from 1199 until his death in 1216. The baronial revolt at the end of John's reign led to the sealing of the first Magna Carta, a document sometimes considered an early step in the evolution of the constitution of the United Kingdom. This third issue "REX" coinage was the only coinage struck by King John in his own name.

MEDIEVAL, Italy, Genoa, 1139 - 1339Silver Grosso, Biaggi-838

Before 1100, Genoa emerged as an independent city-state, one of a number of Italian city-states during this period. Nominally, the Holy Roman Emperor was overlord and the Bishop of Genoa was president of the city; however, actual power was wielded by a number of "consuls" annually elected by popular assembly. Genoa was one of the so-called "Maritime Republics" (Repubbliche Marinare), along with Venice, Pisa, and Amalfi and trade, shipbuilding and banking helped support one of the largest and most powerful navies in the Mediterranean. Through Genoese participation on the Crusades, colonies were established in the Middle East, in the Aegean, in Sicily and Northern Africa.

The collapse of the Crusader States was offset by Genoa’s alliance with the Byzantine Empire, which opened opportunities of expansion into the Black Sea and Crimea. When I purchased this coin it was identified as as an annonomous issue from Genoa’s trading post at Caffa. The Black Death was imported into Europe in 1347 from the Genoese trading post at Caffa (Theodosia) in Crimea, on the Black Sea.

MEDIEVAL, JERUSALEM, Guy de LusignanAE denier
Obv: facing bust of Guy
Rev:Holy Sepulchre

Guy of Lusignan was a French Poitevin knight, son of Hugh VIII of the Lusignan dynasty. He was king of the crusader state of Jerusalem from 1186 to 1192 by right of marriage to Sibylla of Jerusalem, and of Cyprus from 1192 to 1194. Having arrived in the Holy Land (where his brother Amalric was already prominent) at an unknown date, Guy was hastily married to Sibylla in 1180 to prevent a political incident within the kingdom. Guy was appointed regent of Jerusalem and at Sibylla's succession to the throne in 1186 she gave the crown to Guy as her king-consort. Guy's reign was marked by increased hostilities with the Ayyubids ruled by Saladin, culminating in the Battle of Hattin in July 1187, during which Guy was captured, and the fall of Jerusalem itself three months later.
