Struck in Zagreb. The emissions from the reign of Charles Robert were debased and of variable weights, and were referred to by contemporaries as "banales novi." This coin does not appear to match that description. While Rengjeo and Mimica attribute this emission to Charles Robert and Ban Nikola, Unger indicates that it is of unknown attribution but from the 14th century. Metcalf, however, states that emissions with the NE ligate, such as this coin, are found only within Nuber Type AI, varieties 1 and 2, which were only issued during the reign of Bela IV (ending 1270), in which this privy mark was used.
