RIC #116; Sear #8684.

The chronology of the denarii coinage of Gordian III has been poorly understood because Roman Imperial Coinage (RIC) has it mixed up in its listings. For example, it will tell you that 5 denarii (Diana, Pietas, Salus, Securitas, and Venus) were issued in the summer of 241 to commemorate the marriage of Gordian and Tranquillina. Recent thinking tells another entirely different story. The following summary is based on a posting by Curtis Clay, November 25, 2011, on the Forum Ancient Coins Classical Numismatics Discussion Board.
Although antoniniani were issued for a while under Caracalla and Elagabalus, the denarius was the standard silver denomination throughout the reigns of Severus Alexander, Maximinus Thrax, and into the first part of the joint reign of Balbinus & Pupienus. (This, by the way, is when the PIETAS AVGG denarius of Gordian as Caesar was issued.) Sometime during the short reign of Balbinus & Pupienus, the antoninianus supplanted the denarius as the standard silver denomination. When Gordian III became emperor (July 238), his administration continued to follow the then current practice of issuing only antoniniani.

Early in 240, Gordian apparently decided to revert back to the traditional coinage of the Empire and began to issue only denarii. The denarii issued at this time were the following:

P M TR P III COS P P / Horseman
DIANA LVCIFERA
PIETAS AVGVSTI
SALVS AVGVSTI
SECVRITAS PVBLICA
VENVS VICTRIX

No antoniniani exist with these reverse types.

The next issue of denarii was issued in the summer of 240 after Gordian became COS II, and consists of these types:

P M TR P III COS II P P / Emperor standing
P M TR P III COS II P P / Apollo seated
AETERNITATI AVG
IOVIS STATOR
LAETITIA AVG N
VIRTVTI AVGVSTI

Within a short time, however, it was decided to go back to having the antoninianus as the standard silver denomination. Antoniniani were issued again, at first with the same reverse types as the second issue of denarii. That is why these reverse types exist on denarii and antoniniani even though they were not issued at the same time.

So the period the mint issued denarii rather than antoniniani as the standard silver denomination lasted from about March through August, 240. This was the last time denarii were issued for general circulation. The antoninianus lasted until Diocletian’s coinage reform of 295, after which Roman coinage was so vastly different that there was no question of returning to the denarius.

The 13 denarii of Gordian III are presented in this album in this order:
Gordian III as Caesar denarius - 1 coin.
First issue of denarii - 6 coins.
Second issue of denarii - 6 coins.

Coin depicts radiated beardless Jupiter Axurus who seems to be simmilar to the Apollo, Sol or Syrian Jupiter Heliopolitanus. His temple complex from the first century BC stood on the cliff above town Terracina which gave to the world the word terrace.

Moneyer was adoptive son of C Vibius C.f. Pansa. He became tribune in 51 BC and supported Caesar. In 43 BC he and Aulus Hirtius were sent with two senate armies to attack Marc Antony. Their armies won the battle of Forum Gallorum near Mutina but Hirtius died in the battle and Pansa was mortally wounded so Octavian Caesar became commander of the whole army.

Rev.: IOVI CONS AVG, goat, walking or standing right. Ï‚ (digamma or stigma) in exergue.

19mm, 2.53g, die axis 12 (medal alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy supposedly with some silver.

Authority and portrait: Gallienus (joint reign 253-, sole reign 260-268). Mint: Rome.

AVG = Augustus; IOVI CONS[ervatori] AVG[usti]= to Jupiter the Protector of the Augustus.

"Zoo" coins: a significant fraction of Gallienus radiates was issued very near the end of his reign to honor nine Roman deities, asking for their protection. Their reverses depict various animals and thus are known as "zoo" coins. Goat is the chosen animal of Jupiter. Ï‚ designates officina 6, mostly minting Jupiter coins of this type.

Basic type is RIC V-1 Rome 207; RSC 341; Sear 10236. But then many varieties exists – emperor's bust bare/draped/cuirassed, goat walking left or right, larger and smaller sizes etc.

Note that as often with Rome mint some letters are made of separate lines and thus sometimes V = II and N = ΛI or III etc.

There is a significant confusion regarding how to represent numerical Ï‚ of that time and what to call it (digamma or stigma or sigma), see a detailed discussion in http://parthia.com/fonts/stigma.htm. The scoop is that it should be written as a cross between Ï‚ and S, treated as a capital and called stigma. But we use modern Greek end sigma Ï‚ since it is conveniently available in modern fonts. And it still means number 6 in this case.

Possibly a reverse that refers to a failed plot against the emperor, Jupiter is scene here as his own worshipper. Similar in theme to the previous Neronian Iuppiter Custos reverse.

A nicely centered denarius with no obvious flaws. A good example of prime Flavian coinage.

It so happens that I already have one of these. This one is, I believe, a significant upgrade. RIC 849 has Vespasianus in the obverse legend. This is a very common coin. However, this example (RIC 863) uses Vespasian in the legend. That simple change is the difference between a very common coin and a very rare coin. This is a very difficult type to find if you are looking for one.

Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 159, 3 June 2008, lot 271.

Rated R2 by the RIC and unlisted previously, this was a most difficult coin for me to find.

Here is Curtis Clay's text from HJB's 159th buy or bid sale, which I cannot improve upon:

"A rare variant of the obverse legend for this reverse type, only recently published, allowing us to date the type's introduction precisely to 76 AD. In the course of that year, the obverse legend on Titus' gold and silver coins was expanded from T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN to the same with VESPASIANVS, and the new form lasted until his accession as Augustus in 79. Titus' IOVIS CVSTOS reverse type was previously recorded only with obverse VESPASIANVS, so datable 76-79 AD; but RIC-863 and our coin with obverse VESPASIAN suggest that the type was introduced precisely in the year of the legend change, 76. RIC-863 cites two specimens of this denarius, in Berlin and in a private collection; we have seen a couple of others in trade or private collections over the past few years."

It's not everyday you come across a variant which can pin down the dating of a well known type! Not only is the coin rare, but the portrait on this example, in my opinion, is quite exceptional.

Acquired from Ancient Imports, June 2007.

A coin type, which was also issued by Vespasian, symbolises the Emperor's safety after a plot. Helvidius Priscus' execution around this time comes to mind.

While the flan may be a bit ragged and the legends not full, the portrait is wonderful and it caught my eye.

There is much debate about the nature of Vejovis, some of it going back to Roman times: Aulus Gellius sees this deity as an anti-Jupiter (NA 5.12). Why he appears on coins is, to my knowledge, not clear. The reverse shows the Lares Praestites, protectors of the city strongly associated with dogs: they were clad in dog skins, and had a dog as their companion "the dog is terrible for strangers (...) but well-disposed and kind to those who live with them” but the Lares were also avenging deities who chased down evil doers (Plutarch, Quest. Rom 5.51, Ovid, Fastes 5.140-142) Ovid also mentions a statue of the “twin gods”, apparently lost by his time: it has been suggested that this coin represents this cult image, found in the temple at the Via Sacra (Ovid, Fastes 5.145-6).

According to Sydenham, the Lares portrayed on this coin are those of Rhegium, the monogram reading LA[res] RE[gienses]; for Palmer, RE reads regionum (quoted in D. G. Orr, ANRW, ‘Roman Domestic Religion’:1567n54), Freeman and Sear read “PRE”.

Thanks to Amadis for pointing out an inscription (the "Bronce de Alcántara") mentioning a L. Caesius as a propraetor (?) in Hispania Ulterior in 104 B.C. It is conceivable this was indeed the moneyer of this coin.

RIC (for Vespasian) 863 (after discussion with David - see file -). Flan crack at 7 pm on the observe has been quite a nuisance for attribution (hesitating with the 874 type).
Rarity : R2

End of the observe legend partially off but attributed as VESPASIAN (which is 863 in this case and a R2 rarity factor vs the 874 - VESPASIANVS - and a C rarity factor).

Dated to coins with COS VII with obverse die links, this is a new type issued for 76 A.D. This is a decent specimen of this common type issued towards the end of Vespasian’s reign.

This Jupiter reverse was a new type for 76 A.D., and can be dated by obverse die links to dated issues of the year. This left facing example is scarce and is an upgrade for me of a well worn example I’ve had for some time.
