RIC 210?

Pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust, right, CONSTANTIVS P F AVG
Soldier spearing fallen horseman who is kneeling forwards on ground on hands and knees. Star in right field, FEL TEMP REPARATIO. Mintmark BSIS?

Constantius II got the East when the empire was divided after Constantine the Great's death. Zosimus recorded, "The empire being thus divided, Constantius who appeared to take pains not to fall short of his father in impiety, began by shedding the blood of his nearest relations. He first caused Constantius, his father's brother, to be murdered by the soldiers; next to whom he treated Dalmatius in the same manner, as also Optatus whom Constantine had raised to the rank of a Nobilissimate. Constantine indeed first introduced that order, and made a law, that every Nobilissimate should have precedence over of the prefects of the court. At that time, Ablabius prefect of the court was also put to death; and fate was just in his punishment, because he had concerted the murder of Sopatrus the philosopher, from envy of his familiarity with Constantine. Being unnatural towards all his relations, he included Hanniballianus with the rest, suborning the solders to cry out, that they would have no governors but the children of Constantine. Such were the exploits of Constantius." He defeated the usurper Magnentius in 351-353. He died of fever while marching to confront Julian the Apostate, who had been declared emperor in Paris.

The two captives FTR was most likely issued to celebrate the victory of the Roman Army under the command of Constantius II at the Battle of Singara, which occurred in A.D. 344. The Roman Empire claimed to have defeated the Sassanid Army led by Shapur II, but in reality the Persians broke off the siege, as Shapur II probably realized his forces were spread too thin.

This type was issued by both Magnentius and Nepotian in the name of Constantius II.

When assigning RIC numbers to these, it is a bit arbitrary since the biggest difference between the issues is size, and there is overlap, i.e. Second series first group (Magnentius) RIC 195- 197 dia. 25- 26mm, second group (Nepotian) RIC 198- 200 dia. 23- 25mm, third group (Magnentius) RIC 204- 205 dia. 22- 24mm. There is likely no actual way to tell these coins apart.

This type was only struck at Trier and is attributed to the period known as the Revolt of Poemenius. This event would be completely lost to history except for the brief passage in Ammianus 15.6.4: ...Poemenius was condemned as a malefactor, hailed to execution and perished; he was the man (as we have told above) who was chosen to protect his fellow-citizens when Trier closed its gates against Decentius Caesar.

Sometime in A.D. 353, the citizens of Trier revolted against Decentius and declared their support of Constantius II (SALVS AVG NOSTRI = Safety of our Augustus). Unfortunately for Poemenius, he was executed in A.D. 355, probably for his support of Silvanus.

The position of the horseman is extraordinary and doesn't fit any of the RIC types of FH. And he doesn't wear a pointed cap - as described in RIC - but obviously a turban! So I think he is not an ordinary horseman but a dignitary.

Pedigree:
ex Baldwins 1989
ex coll. Failmezger (plate coin)

The rev. is cut a bit disregardfully. So the position of the spear behind the soldier's arm is physically impossible. Not in Helvetica's FH lists. Arles 215 is only described with type FH3 reaching!

Arelate (Arles) was named Constantina AD 328-340 in honour of Constantine II, who was born here. And a second time from AD 353-374.

Here the horseman is not only reaching but grasps clearly the soldier's spear. A nice variant. Not in Helvetica's list..
