An exceptional issue: It is the first Roman coin struck from Orichalcum (brass). Probably this type was struck after the victory over the sons of Pompeius at Munda 17.March AD 45 to serve as donation at his triumph in Rome. The depiction is unusual and is a symbol of Caesar's military abilities. Brass was used probably to make the look of the coin more valuable.

RIC_Julius_Caesar_Crawford_476-1a.JPG
Julius Caesar (Gaius Julius Caesar) (Dictator, 49-44 B.C.)Crawford 476/1a-b, RPC I 601/1

AE Dupondius (26 mm; orichalchum), north Italian mint (possibly Milan) stuck 45 B.C.

Obv: CAESAR•DIC•TER, draped bust of Victory right (probably without star behind bust).

Rev: C•CLOVI PRAEF, Minerva walking left, holding trophy over shoulder, spear, and shield, decorated with Medusa; erect snake at feet left.

Note: The first AE coin struck in nearly 40 years and the first struck in orichalchum. AE coinage was probably reintroduced to recall traditional republican ideas. The coin commemorates Caesar’s victory in Spain, with Victory and Minerva sending a clear message about Caesar’s military abilities. The identity of prefect Clovius and his prefecture are debatable, as is the mint in which these were struck, although hoard finds suggest a north Italian origin, possibly Milan. (per CNG Coinshop No. 735607)

Note: If there is no star behind the bust, it is a Crawford 476/1a, and if there is a star it is a Crawford 476/ab.
