64-65 Ad Nero - RIC 53 - RareNERO CAESAR AVGVSTVS - Laureate Bust right
IVPPITER CVSTOS - Jupiter, seated left, holding thunderbolt and scepter.
The reverse "type commemorates the protection of Nero from the Pisonian Conspiracy. In 64 AD, a large section of central Rome burned; Nero's reputed singing of the destruction of Troy during the fire led to the later association of him "fiddling" as the city burned. Nero's "excesses" resulted in a conspiracy to overthrow and replace him with Gaius Calpurnius Piso. Among the conspirators were many high-ranking members of Nero's court including Seneca the Younger, the poet Lucan, and Petronius, who called himself Nero's "arbiter of elegance." To Nero, the the failure of a conspiracy made up of those so close to him could have been achieved only through divine intervention. As the king of the Gods oversaw the security of the Roman state, Nero believed it was Jupiter the Guardian (Custos) who had saved him from harm."

This reverse type commemorates the supposed protection of Nero, by Jupiter, from the Pisonian Conspiracy. Nero's excesses after The Great Fire of Rome in 64 resulted in close associates conspiring to assassinate and replace him with Gaius Calpurnius Piso. As the king of the Gods oversaw the security of the Roman state, Nero believed it was Jupiter the Guardian (Custos) who had saved him from harm.

About a year after this coin was minted, in 66 CE, the Jews would rebel against Roman rule and, in 67, Nero would send general Vespasian to crush the rebelion.

Acquired from Silenos Coins, eBay, September 2007.

Possibly a reverse that refers to a failed plot against the emperor, Jupiter is scene here as his own worshipper. Similar in theme to the previous Neronian Iuppiter Custos reverse.

A nicely centered denarius with no obvious flaws. A good example of prime Flavian coinage.

It so happens that I already have one of these. This one is, I believe, a significant upgrade. RIC 849 has Vespasianus in the obverse legend. This is a very common coin. However, this example (RIC 863) uses Vespasian in the legend. That simple change is the difference between a very common coin and a very rare coin. This is a very difficult type to find if you are looking for one.

Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 159, 3 June 2008, lot 271.

Rated R2 by the RIC and unlisted previously, this was a most difficult coin for me to find.

Here is Curtis Clay's text from HJB's 159th buy or bid sale, which I cannot improve upon:

"A rare variant of the obverse legend for this reverse type, only recently published, allowing us to date the type's introduction precisely to 76 AD. In the course of that year, the obverse legend on Titus' gold and silver coins was expanded from T CAESAR IMP VESPASIAN to the same with VESPASIANVS, and the new form lasted until his accession as Augustus in 79. Titus' IOVIS CVSTOS reverse type was previously recorded only with obverse VESPASIANVS, so datable 76-79 AD; but RIC-863 and our coin with obverse VESPASIAN suggest that the type was introduced precisely in the year of the legend change, 76. RIC-863 cites two specimens of this denarius, in Berlin and in a private collection; we have seen a couple of others in trade or private collections over the past few years."

It's not everyday you come across a variant which can pin down the dating of a well known type! Not only is the coin rare, but the portrait on this example, in my opinion, is quite exceptional.

A coin type, which was also issued by Vespasian, symbolises the Emperor's safety after a plot. Helvidius Priscus' execution around this time comes to mind.

While the flan may be a bit ragged and the legends not full, the portrait is wonderful and it caught my eye.

An excellent mature portrait of Nero with striking details and stylistically superior devices on a flan that is just a touch tight, but still full legends. The reverse, however, exhibits significantly more wear than the obverse, possibly from cabinet wear as it does appear that this coin has been out of the ground for an extended period. Lightly toned.

Vespasian RIC II 0849Vespasian. 69-79A.D. AR Denarius. Rome Mint. 76 A.D. (3.31g, 18.6m, 6h). Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right. Rev: IOVIS CVSTOS, Jupiter standing facting, with patera over alter and scepter. RIC II 849, RSC 222, BMC 276.

Dated to coins with COS VII with obverse die links, this is a new type issued for 76 A.D. This is a decent specimen of this common type issued towards the end of Vespasian’s reign.

Vespasian RIC II 0850Vespasian. 69-79 A.D. AR Denarius. Rome Mint. 76 A.D. (2.91g. 17.9mm, 6h). Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head left. REV: IOVIS CVSTOS, Jupiter standing facing with patera over altar and scepter. RIC II 850 (R2). RSC 223.

A worn reverse, but I got this coin for the left facing head on the obverse, with the left facing coins being more scarce that the typical right facing coins.

Vespasian RIC II 0850Vespasian 69-79 A.D. AR Denarius. 76 A.D. Rome Mint. (3.23g, 20.0mm, 6h). Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head left. Obv: IOVIS CVSTOS, Jupiter standing facing with patera over altar and scepter. RIC II 850 (R2). RSC 554; BMC 279.

This Jupiter reverse was a new type for 76 A.D., and can be dated by obverse die links to dated issues of the year. This left facing example is scarce and is an upgrade for me of a well worn example I’ve had for some time.
