This coin is one of a series of coins struck by Philip I and Philip II in A.D.248 to commemorate the 1000th anniversary of Rome. Many of these coins depict the various animals, brought from all over the Empire, which were displayed in the arena during the games celebrating this event.

RIC cf.181 GOBL 716b(1) CUNETIO 1344 CMR 7a3(C)

This variation of the Antelope where the head is looking up isn't depicted in the drawing types for the Antelope in Figure 9 in Appendix 5 of the Cunetio. Although it is not so uncommon as I have seen about 3 or 4 examples coming up for sale in the last couple of years, and there is one example is shown in Gobl but with a different obverse (716u). Judging from the differences recorded between the other example types in Figure 9 in the Cunetio (for example Tigress items 5 & 6, Doe item 20 & 21 or 23 & 240) one would assume that the authors would have also recorded the head being raised on the Antelope had such an example been present. Therefore the logical conclusion is that this variation is unlikely to have been present in the Cunetio Hoard.

There is no record of a retrograde gamma antelope in Gobl or in Cunetio/Venera hoards. The curaissed bust is also rare for the Antelope types with only 3 examples recorded in Gobl and a rarity grade of R4 in CMR (Catalogue Des Monnaies Romaines)

The Catalogue des Monnaies Romaines goes into good details on the bust

GOBL 717b

From the information published in the Cunetio & Gobl and other examples I've found on the internet (not so many). The near side front leg is always to the rear of the far side front leg (like my other Antelope right). On this particular coin the front legs are the other way round, which could indicate it is not an Antelope type but perhaps one of the Gazelle types. The right facing Gazelle from the XI Officina is quite common, however the rear legs are always seen from behind and the horns are usually short and straight rather than curvy. The right facing Gazelle from the XII Officina is uncommon and does have examples with both sets of legs in the same position as this coin, but again the horns are different, longer, straight and sweeping back over the body rather than curvy. It is a shame the Officina mark is off flan, but for the time being I'll stick with an Antelope attribution until further research informs me otherwise.

RIC ??? GOBL ???? CUNETIO ????

I've listed this one as a Gazelle from the XII officina. The rear legs are wrong according to the Cunetio for the Gazelle XI types. Plus the front legs seem to be wrong for the Antelope Gamma types. The shape of the horns seem more in keeping with the Gazelle XII Type rather than both of the other types. The right facing Gazelle XII types seems to be more common than the right facing Antelope types.

The bust seems to be the type listed in Göbl as "Paludamentum über Cüraß" (Paludamentum is a roman cloak/cape, über = over & Cüraß = Cuirass which is a piece of armour which covers the torso) this is abbreviated as PCh in the tables. In table 20 which is where the animal series for Rome can be found, there is only listed a PCh2 bust type, the 2 digit relating to the ties/ribbons which would be hanging freely. This coin however seems to have one tie draped over the shoulder like the standard right facing busts which is indicated by the 1 digit (B1 for example for the standard right facing bust). This would make the bust type a PCh1 of which there are few examples in Göbl (for example table 7 38r) but none recorded in table 20 for the animal series.

GALLIENVS AVG / DIANAE CONS AVG antelope antoninianus (close to 267-268 A.D.) "Zoo" series Obv.: GALLIENVS AVG, radiate bare? bust of Gallienus right, [one ribbon behind, one forward across shoulder?]
Rev.: DIANAE CONS AVG, antelope, walking left. Exergue unclear, mintmark broken off.

irregular 16-19mm, 2.13g, die axis 6h (coin alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy supposedly with some silver.

Authority and portrait: Gallienus (joint reign 253-, sole reign 260-268). Mint: Rome.

AVG = Augustus; DIANAE CONS[ervatorix] AVG[usti]= to Diana the Protector of the Augustus.

"Zoo" coins: a significant fraction of Gallienus radiates was issued very near the end of his reign to honor nine Roman deities, asking for their protection. Their reverses depict various animals and thus are known as "zoo" coins. Typically stag or doe is the sacred animal of Diana, but in this case it is antelope.

RIC V-1 181; RSC 165; Goebl 750b; Sear 10200. RIC 181 has some variations: emperor's bust bare/draped/cuirassed, antelope walking left or right and so on. The size is typically 19-20mm, but there are slightly larger types.

Note that as often with Rome mint some letters are made of separate lines and thus sometimes V = II, N = ΛI or III, M = IIII etc.

The officina is unknown, for this type it is typically XI or XII.

GALLIENVS AVG / DIANAE CONS AVG stag antoninianus (close to 267-268 A.D.) "Zoo" series Obv.: [GA]LLIENVS AVG, radiate bare bust right, one ribbon behind, one forward across shoulder
Rev.: DIA[NAE CON]S [AVG], stag, walking left. X in exergue.

oval 17-21mm, 2.13g, die axis 6h (coin alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy supposedly with some silver.

Stag (or doe) is the sacred animal of Diana. X designates officina 10, mostly minting Diana coins of this type, with a stag.

Seems RIC V-1 Rome 179; Cohen 160; Goebl 0744b; Sear 10201. RIC 179 has some variations: emperor's bust bare/draped/cuirassed, stag walking left or right and so on. There are coins of smaller 17-19mm type and larger and heavier 21-23mm / up to 4g type.

Note that as often with Rome mint some letters are made of separate lines and thus sometimes V = II, N = ΛI or III, M = IIII etc.

ID points: The coin is definitely a Diana Zoo type. There are two ID problems: is there IMP in the beginning of obverse legend (very likely not, because there is not enough space) and what type of animal is this, a stag or an antelope? The latter would point towards RIC 180 or 181 types. The shape of the antlers is a bit inconclusive, because there is only one and it bends down. However, the antelope usually has two clear parallel antlers close to each other. In this case it is more likely that we simply do not see the full pair of stag antlers, because they are separated too far and one is lost, while vague shapes near the other are continuation of its branches. Also, officina X almost exclusively minted the stag coins of Diana, while the antelope ones were the work of officinas 3, 11 and 12.

INDIA, Kushan-Huviska-oHpOKushan Empire, Huvishka, Gold Dinar, 21 mm, 7.80g, OhPo (Oesho) or Shiva type (with 4-arms)

Obv: Bearded King's bust emerging from clouds holding a short mace/goad in right hand and a sceptre/sword in left hand, flames coming out from the right shoulder. The King is wearing beautiful clothes and ornaments but the overall look of the King, bearded and with heavy jowl, is nomadic, barbaric and fierce. If the desire was to convey an image of a fierce and uncompromising warrior, then the same has been communicated very well by the die engraver. The King rising from the clouds and with flames coming out from shoulders indicate the King's claim to divinity.

Rev: 4-arm Shiva, nimbate and wearing a 'dhoti' (Indian loin cloth), holding in various arms, Damru or the celestial drum (upper right), Kamandla or water-pot with water pouring forth (lower right), Trishul or trident (upper left) and a Mrig or antelope held by its horns (lower left). The kamandla with water pouring forth symbolizes the blessing of the God on the King's investiture featured on the Obv while the Mrig held by its horns symbolizes the control of (an ascetic) Shiva over sensory perceptions, desires etc of which a fast moving and easily agitated deer/antelope is a symbol. Shiva is also known by various other names with the most popular ones being "Maha Yogi" (Great Ascetic) where Shiva is shown with matted hair and ash smeared over body sitting in "Padmasana" (Padma - Lotus, Asana - yogic posture). He is also termed as "Pashupatinath" (Lord of Animals or Wild Beasts) where the reference to animals/wild beasts is to the wild passions/desires etc that leads mere mortals astray but over which Shiva has mastery and full control. Shiva is also called "Mahadeva" (The Great God), "Mahakaal" (The Great (controller of) Death, Destruction or Time, a reference to Shiva's ability to destroy (evil/ignorance) for new creation and creativity), "Neelkanth" (Blue Throated Lord, a reference to Shiva's selfless act of consuming poison generated from the churning of the ocean to elicit the elixir of life that the Gods drank to become immortal), "Rudra" (Fierce, Mighty, Terrifying etc, a reference to Shiva's ability to eliminate evil and usher peace), etc.

A very fine piece of art in which the swaying 'rudraksha mala' (garland) around the neck of Shiva conveys the necessary vigour and motion together with the other objects shown in the iconography viz vibrating drum, pouring water etc. The facial features of both the King and the Deity complement each other symbolizing common association with the King claiming his right to rule as a "Dev-putra" (Son of God) with the blessing of the God. A powerful iconographic symbol.
