Dy.176 Philip II (Augustus): denier tournois (Saint Martin de Tours)24 viewsPhilip II, king of France (1180-1223)
Denier tournois (Saint Martin de Tours)

Billon, 0.96 g, diameter 18.5 mm, die axis 7h
O: PHILIPVS REX; croix pattée
R: +SCS MARTINVS; châtel tournois

The livre parisis was a standard for minting coins (and for unit of accounts) inherited from the Carolingians.
In 1203, John (Lackland) lost Anjou to Philip II. The deniers minted at the Saint Martin abbey in Touraine were considered as very stable. So Philip II decided to adopt the livre tournois (tournois means "of Tours", Tours is a French city in Anjou close to Saint Martin abbey) as a new standard denier and unit of account. Livre parisis and livre tournois coexisted for some time but the livre tournois quickly outstripped the livre parisis as a unit of account. Deniers parisis ceased to be struck a little more than a century later, but livre parisis existed till 17th century.
SCS MARTINVS means Sanctus Martinus (Saint Martin). The name of the abbey was temporarily kept on the deniers tournois, but was soon replaced by the name of the city of Tours.

Poitou was an Anglo-Gallic province in what is now west-central France and its capital city was Poitiers, the mint at this time was however located at Melle. Melle was an active centre of minting during the early Middle Ages due to the important silver mines located under and around the city. This is the only coin issue struck during the reign of Richard I to bear his own name and titles as King of England.

Richard I was King of England from 1189 until his death on 6th April 1199. He also ruled several territories outwith England, and was styled as Duke of Normandy, Aquitaine and Gascony, Lord of Cyprus, Count of Poitiers, Anjou, Maine, and Nantes, as well as being overlord of Brittany at various times during the same period. He was the third of five sons of King Henry II of England and Duchess Eleanor of Aquitaine. He was known as Richard the Lionheart (Richard Cśur de Lion) because of his reputation as a great military leader and warrior when, at the age of 16 and commanding his own army, he had put down rebellions against his father in Poitou.
Richard was a commander during the Third Crusade, and led the campaign after the departure of Philip II of France. However, although he scored several notable victories against the Muslims led by Saladin, he failed to retake Jerusalem from them.
Although Richard was born in England and spent his childhood there before becoming king, he lived most of his adult life in the Duchy of Aquitaine. Following his accession, his life was mostly spent on Crusade, in captivity, or actively defending his lands in France. Rather than regarding England as a responsibility requiring his presence as ruler, he appears to have used it merely as a source of revenue to support his armies. Nevertheless, he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects and he remains one of the few kings of England who is remembered by his epithet rather than by his regnal number, and even today he is still an iconic figure in both England and France.

This issue of coins is known as the pinecone-mascle issue because these symbols are incorporated in the obverse and reverse legends. This issue was struck between 1430 and 1434 at the mints of London and Calais.

Henry VI was King of England from 1422 to 1461 and again from 1470 to 1471. The only child of Henry V, he succeeded to the English throne at the age of nine months when his father died.
This was during the period of the long-running Hundred Years' War (1337–1453) and Henry is the only English monarch to also have been crowned King of France (as Henri II), in 1431. During his early reign several people were ruling for him and by the time Henry was declared fit to rule in 1437 he found his realm in a difficult position, faced with setbacks in France and divisions among the nobility at home. Henry is described as timid, shy, passive, well-intentioned, and averse to warfare and violence; he was also at times mentally unstable. Partially in the hope of achieving peace, Henry married the ambitious and strong-willed Margaret of Anjou in 1445. The peace policy failed and the war recommenced with France taking the upper hand such that by 1453 Calais was Henry's only remaining territory on the continent.
With Henry effectively unfit to rule, Queen Margaret took advantage of the situation to make herself an effective power behind the throne. Starting around 1453 Henry began suffering a series of mental breakdowns and tensions mounted between Margaret and Richard of York, not only over control of the incapacitated king's government, but over the question of succession to the throne. Civil war broke out in 1459, leading to a long period of dynastic conflict, now known as the Wars of the Roses. Henry was deposed on 29th March 1461 after a crushing defeat at the Battle of Towton by Richard of York's son, who took the throne as Edward IV. Margaret continuing to resist Edward, but Henry was captured by Edward's forces in 1465 and imprisoned in the Tower of London.
Queen Margaret, who was first exiled in Scotland and then in France, was still determined to win back the throne on behalf of her husband and son. So, when Edward IV fell out with two of his main supporters, Richard Neville the Earl of Warwick and George the Duke of Clarence, Margaret formed a secret alliance with them backed by Louis XI of France. Warwick returned with an army to England, forced Edward IV into exile, and restored Henry VI to the throne on 30th October 1470, though Henry's position was nominal as Warwick and Clarence effectively ruled in his name.
But Henry's return to the throne lasted less than six months. Warwick overreached himself by declaring war on Burgundy, whose ruler responded by giving Edward IV the assistance he needed to win back his throne by force. Edward retook power in 1471, killing Warwick at the Battle of Barnet and Henry's only son at the Battle of Tewkesbury. Henry was again imprisoned in the Tower where, during the night of 21st May he died, possibly killed on Edward's orders.

Ivan Alexander divided his kingdom between his two sons. Ivan Stratsimir received Vidin. In 1365, the Hungarian King Louis I of Anjou captured Vidin. Sratsimir and his family were held captive in Croatia for four years but in 1369 Sratsimir was restored to his throne under Hungarian overlordship. After the Ottoman invasion in 1388, he was forced to acknowledge Ottoman overlordship and garrisons. In 1396 Sratsimir and his subjects aligned themselves with the anti-Ottoman Crusade led by the Hungarian king Sigismund of Luxemburg. The crusade ended in disaster at the battle of Nikopol on September 25, 1396. By the end of 1397 Sultan Bayezid I approached Vidin and, assured by the promise of his safety, Ivan Stratsimir came out to meet him. On the order of Bayezid I, Ivan Stratsimir was arrested and conveyed to Bursa, while the Sultan confiscated the contents of the Vidin treasury. Sratsimir's fate is unknown. Vidin was likely annexed by the Ottoman Empire in 1397, but at least part of the realm remained under the control of Sratsimir's son and heir Constantine II.

Rev.: + SIGNVM DEI VIVI (= Signe de Dieu vivant = Sign of the Living God), cross with pellets in the upper quadrants and alpha and omega in the lower.

Herbert was, at times, a nominal vassal of his neighbor Fulk III Nerra, Count of Anjou but otherwise considered himself independent. He obtained his nickname "Wake-dog" for having to constantly resist the intrusions of his Angevin neighbors to the south.

Obv: + GOSEDVS COS (Geoffroi, count), cross with staff and hammer in second angle and triangles in other three angles.

Rev: + GIEMIS CA (Castle of Gien), degraded monogram of Fulk of Anjou (legend begins at 9 o’clock).

The deniers of Gien were derived from those of Angers and bear a degraded monogram of Fulk of Angers. The reason for this is unclear as the regions are far apart and there is no connection between them. Standards of weight and fineness appear to have been similar, as records from 1202-3 value the denier giennois at 1.5 deniers parisis and the denier angevin at 1.46 d.p.

The deniers are struck in the name of a Count Geoffrey, and the type may have begun under Geoffrey II (1169-1184) or more probably Geoffrey III (1120-1160), but was immobilized after 1160. The coin is variously attributed to either or both of them, and also to Herve III (1160-1194). It ceased to be minted in 1191 when King Phillip II Augustus (1180-1223) acquired Gien and closed its mint.

Money Provisino31 viewsDescription provided by Signiferlxf

Money Provisino, or more simply "Provisino", a coin was minted in Provins, in the north-east of France, by the Counts of Champagne. The name is the Provisino Italianization of Denier Provinois.

The type is the cross and the comb. Straight to the comb in the field has a double reference to the activities of the carding of wool, which was the main industry of the city of Provins, and the play on words between "champ" and "peigne" ("field" and "comb") which showed similarity to the region of origin.

In the twelfth and thirteenth Provins was the site of an important cattle fair, held in May and September, which attracted merchants from Europe as a whole. It was inserted between the Champagne fairs, which alternated between the city of Provins, Troyes, Saint-Florentin, Bar-sur-Aube, Sézanne, Château-Thierry. The first traces of the exhibitions are documented in Provins (999) and Troyes (1100): in 1137 the Flemings before attending the fair, the Italians began to attend on a regular basis since 1170. Based on local currency trades, the provisino acquired great importance and circulated throughout Europe.

The great influx of pilgrims to Rome, (even after the Crusades) brought large amounts of provisini in the city are also documented numerous trips influential Roman merchants at the fair in Provins. Given the poor performance of the Mint, and the arrival of a lesser amount of Imperial Coins of Pavia, Provisino had wide circulation in the city, much to soon be imitated by the mint of Rome. Around 1184 the Senate of Rome did in fact issue the provisinus senatus, showing the comb topped with an S and the legend ROMA CAPUT MVNDI. On the reverse cross was surrounded by the inscription SENATVS P. Q. R.
Provisini were coined by the then Senator of Rome, Charles of Anjou and Cola di Rienzo, and later still by Boniface IX in the Jubilee of 1400. The Roman provisino was coined until the reign of Pope Eugenius IV (1431-1447).

A linguistic curiosity: the value of small coins, it was natural that the Provisino (Provvisino called by the people) were used for purchases of food or goods of necessity. From here we began to say that he went to the first provvisita, then provvisita, and subsequently provided. Likewise other words originated as a commission, provisional, and so on.

NEAPOLITAN REPUBLIC - Henry de Guise58 viewsNEAPOLITAN REPUBLIC - Henry de Guise (1647-1648) AE 3 Tornesi, 1648. Obv.: Crowned shield with letters SPQN. Legend: HEN DE LOR DUX REIP N. Rev.: Bound wheat and olives, legend PAX ET UBERTAS 1648. Reference: KM #55. Ex Ardatirion collection.
These are always poorly struck, usually not this nice. The design quality of this piece is rather crude, and the SPQN is NOT aligned properly... letters are sideways. Usually they are straight. Probably made toward the end of the siege of the Republic by Spain.
From Wikepedia: The Neapolitan Republic was a Republic created in Naples, which lasted from 22 October 1647 to 5 April 1648. It began after the revolt led by Masaniello and Giulio Genoino against the Spanish viceroys.
The leader of the Republic was Henry II of Lorraine, duke of Guise, descendant of the former king of Naples Rene I of Anjou. The Republic had the following official names: Serenissima Repubblica di questo regno di Napoli ("Most Serene Republic of this Kingdom of Naples"), Reale Repubblica ("Royal Republic"), and Serenissima Monarchia repubblicana di Napoli ("Most Serene Republican Monarchy of Naples"). All indicated the double nature of the Republic, both republican and monarchical, and "Serenissima" was a purposeful comparison with the famous Italian maritime republic with the same title, Venice. The coat of arms was a red shield with the motto S.P.Q.N., in imitation of the well-known S.P.Q.R., the initialism of the Latin phrase, Senatus Populusque Romanus ("The Senate and the People of Rome"), Thus, the Neapolitan phrase meant "The Senate and People of Naples." The coat of arms contained the crest of the duke of Guise.

Penny of Stephen of Blois, king of England during the period known as "The Anarchy". This was a time of civil war, during which Stephen and Matilda of Anjou, daughter of the late Henry I, feuded for the throne. The country was thrown into chaos, and local barons or warlords took power when central authority disintegrated. The coinage reflects this disorganization, and there are pennies of Stephen, Matilda, and several of the prominent barons, along with "local issues" struck from crude dies with unusual legends. Most coins of this period are poorly struck, with incomplete legends, and this one is no exception.

This type, called the "Watford" type in honor of a large 19th century hoard found in Watford, features the king facing right, with a crown and scepter. The reverse depicts a cross moline with an inward facing fleur-de-lis at the junction of the ends. This is the most common type of Stephen's coinage

This particular coin is of a sub-variety without the inner circle around the king's portrait.

The legend is nearly impossible to make out, but comparison with a finer coin with preserved legends (from the same dies) has enabled me to figure out the legend.

Struck in Zagreb. The emissions from the reign of Charles Robert were debased and of variable weights, and were referred to by contemporaries as "banales novi." This coin does not appear to match that description. While Rengjeo and Mimica attribute this emission to Charles Robert and Ban Nikola, Unger indicates that it is of unknown attribution but from the 14th century. Metcalf, however, states that emissions with the NE ligate, such as this coin, are found only within Nuber Type AI, varieties 1 and 2, which were only issued during the reign of Bela IV (ending 1270), in which this privy mark was used.
