Macedonia, Pella AE21. 158-149 BC. Bust of Pan / Athena Alkidemos advancing right. Ref.Sear 1445

( I was given this coin as a bonus by an experienced collector / dealer, to attempt electrolysis on, he had been attempting to clean it with conventional methods for 1½ years, however it remained a nugget... I know some members will object, but 10 minuets in the bath of evil, and the crust just flaked off revealing a pretty and detailed coin!!! How I wish it was always so easy!!)

Notes:
-Menander was one of the most famous Baktrian rulers. He was said to have raided as far east as modern day Patna. He is also reported to have converted to Buddhism according to the Buddhist text the Milinda Panha (The questions of king Milinda). It is recorded by Plutarch that upon his death his remains were shared amongst cities and 'monuments' were erected to honour these. This may be a reference to Buddhist stupas. It appears that like Alexander before him, he respected the various religions of his kingdom, and used them to gain advantage wherever possible.
-The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, thought to have been written in the mid first century CE, records the following:
"To the present day ancient drachmae are current in Barygaza (modern day Bharuch in Gujarat, India), coming from this country, bearing inscriptions in Greek letters, and the devices of those who reigned after Alexander, Apollodorus and Menander."
-Kharosthi (also known as Gandharan) was a script used in the region of modern day Afghanistan and Pakistan from about the 3rd century BCE to about the 3rd century CE. There is evidence of the script surviving as late as the 7th century CE in some outposts along the Silk Road. Interestingly, some early Chinese translations of Buddhist works indicate a Kharosthi source.
-Kharosthi is read from right to left, like for example modern Arabic. In the case of Menander, his epithets all end in 𐨯 (sa), so it is quite east to make out each word on the coin. The first letter of Menadrasa ꅐ (me) is made up of 𐨨 (m) combined with the diacritic vowel mark ' (e). This letter 'me', is quite distinctive and clearly visible directly below the monogram on my coin. Thus reading (by English convention) backwards the word me . na . dra . sa is clear. Note I was not able to find the Unicode script for Kharosthi 'me', so the symbol I have used is from 'Yi' script which was the closest approximation of The Kharosthi symbol I could find.

Silver Tetradrachm; Very Rough, Edge Chip, Scratches
Minted during reign of Ptolemy I as Satrap
Svoronos 146; SNG Copenhagen 18

Obverse: Head of Alexander III Right with Horn of Ammon, Clad in Elephant's Skin and Aegis.
Reverse: AΛEΣAN∆POY (Of Alexander), Athena Alkidemos (Defender of the People) Advancing Right, Brandishing Spear and Shield; Eagle on Thunderbolt.

Ptolemy I Soter (Savior) (c. 367-283 BC) was a close boyhood friend and later trusted bodyguard and general of Alexander the Great. On Alexander's death, Ptolemy received Egypt as his inheritance. He ruled for 18 years as 'Satrap' of Egypt, but in 305 BC took the title of Pharaoh. He ruled for a further 20 years before dying peacefully in bed, the only of the Diadochi to do so (305-283 BC). He succeeded in creating a stable and prosperous kingdom which his dynasty ruled for 293 years. Most knowledge of Alexander the Great comes from works based on his lost account.

Ptolemy I Soter Tetradrachm as SatrapPtolemy I Soter. Silver Tetradrachm (15.68 g, 26mm), as Satrap, 323-305 BC. Alexandria, in the name of Alexander III. Overstruck on earlier Alexander tetradrachm, 306-305 BC.
O: Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, wearing elephant's skin headdress, aegis around neck with tiny Δ in scales.
R: AΛEΞANΔPOY in left field, Athena Alkidemos advancing right, wielding javelin and holding forth shield;in right field, monogram, Corinthian helmet right above ΔI and eagle standing right on thunderbolt.
-CPE 72; Svoronos 169; Zervos Issue 31, dies 527/a; SNG Copenhagen 30; BMC 26 (same dies).

Overstruck, undertype beading visible on obverse just above elephant's ear; on the reverse, portrait of Alexander above eagles head into Athena's shield.

The earlier 17g tetradrachms were withdrawn from circulation in 306/305 BC and reissued after weight adjustment. They were trimmed to remove 1.5g of silver, heated and restruck. This must have been faster than melting them down into bullion and restriking. Some of these issues, such as this one, show the clear evidence of the edges being trimmed, although many do not.

Ptolemy was feeling the financial burden of repelling Antigonus’ invasion and supporting Rhodes through a thirteen-month siege. The government needed extra currency and Egypt produced little or no silver. The recall of the heavy issues meant 8 tetradrachms were restruck into 9 “Crisis Issues” but with no change in the appearance of the dies.
