Histiaia, Euboea TetrobolAR Tetrobol
Size: 15mm Weight: 2.68 grams Die axis: 12h

Histiaia, Euboea
Mid 4th century BCE

Obverse: Head of the nymph Histiaia right, hair bound in decorative sakkos, wearing wreath with grape bunches, single-drop pendant earring, and pearl necklace.

Reverse: The nymph Histiaia seated right on the stern of galley, her left arm placed around stylis to right; galley decorated with wing, grape bunch to left; IΣTIAI-EΩN around.

References: Hunterian II, pl. xxxiii 12 (obverse die match)

Notes:
-This rare tetrobol belongs to the early 4th century issue of coinage from Histiaia; the more commonly encountered issue copying this type was minted during the 3rd and especially the 2nd century BCE.

The exact dating of these early tetrobols is not settled. Newell (Octobols of Histiaea) argued the issue was related to the expulsion of a pro-Macedonian ruler by Athenian forces in 341/340 BCE - there is a rare octobol of a similar type with what Newell read as ‘AθA(NA)’ written on the stylis.

Robinson in “A catalogue of the Calouste Gulbenkian collection of greek coins” dated the type from the battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE onwards.

Indo-Roman_imitation_(5th_century)_AE4.png
Indo-Roman imitation (5th century) AE4Obv.: Diademed head of emperor right Rev.: Female figure surrounded by veil? Field: S C? Diameter: 13.92 mm Weight: 1.2 grams

This Indo-Roman imitation, according to Weerakoddy, should be connected to the invasion of Sri Lanka from South India by a certain Pandu who, according to the Mahavamsa, ruled the island from A.D. 433-460. He further suggests that most of the coin hoards from Sri Lanka may represent temple donations and payments made to soldiers during Pandu's reign. The abandoning of these hoards may have been the result of disturbances that accompanied the Sinhala rebellion led by Dhatusena, which ended South Indian rule of the island in A.D. 460. Weerakkody also states that these imitative bronzes have been found in great numbers on the island, often as part of large hoards. Many are in private collections, of unknown provenience, or inadequately published. In general, the coins are very worn, and when their context is known it is often a good deal later than the date that they were struck.

Harlan J Berk Buy or Bid Sale 175, May 2011, Lot 114 (incorrectly attributed to Babylon).

This is amongst the first coins issued from Tyre after the siege. It was probably struck in the months immediately following the fall of the city to Alexander. The people who handled it were probably participants in the bloody, protracted siege of Tyre and may then have accompanied Alexander on his expedition to Egypt before going on to fight at Gaugamela. Few Alexander tetradrachms can be so closely associated with the location and movements of the man.

Although traditionally attributed as Kore Soteira, in my opinion this should more correctly be Persephone Soteira. The epithet Soteira (or ‘Savior’) refers to the Goddess’ role as the bringer of Spring and the return of life-giving crops. As this return must necessarily occur after Her abduction She is no longer Maiden (Kore) but rather Persephone, Queen of the Underworld and consort of Hades.

SRI LANKA (imitazione romana) 433-459 d.C.Sri Lanka o Sud India, imitazione monete romane del IV-V secolo (Valentiniano I o Onorio). Databile 433-459 d.C.
D/ busto con elmo a sinistra
R/ figura stante (?)
AE, 1,2 gr., 14,31 mm., MB/D
Moneta 25 (Jarman*)
C., all'inizio dell'era feudale.
