Antoninus Pius - sestertius - RIC 747a, Clive Foss 59a, Van Meter 94/4 (Sear 4185 refers to RIC 746)The celebration of the 900th anniversary of Rome was accompanied with a series of coins struck between 140 - 144 AD. The coins figured scenes from ancient Roman legends, such as the she-wolf and Romulus and Remus. This coin, depicting Italia on the reverse, was part of this series. The turreted crown is the symbol of the sovereignty of the Italian peninsula as a land of free cities and of Roman citizens. The globe perhaps could also refer to the Ptolemaic notion of heavenly spheres, shown by zonal grid-lines superimposed over the globe and stars. The stars and lines can clearly be seen on my example. Prov: Bertolami Fine Arts Web Auction 92 (3 Oct 2020), Lot 987.

Notes: A classic of Republican "captives" coinage, the obverse depicts the same female captive shown on Julius Caesar's famous denarius (Craw 468/1); my specimen: [FAC Gallery LINK]. A second denarius was issued depicting the head of the male (Vercingetorix?).
The obverse dies for this type (Crawford observed 126 of them!) fall into two groups: those presenting an "idealized" Gallia (much more common), and those attempting greater "realism" (including this one). (Some dies in the latter group are dreadful.)
This particular die presents a uniquely vivacious portrait in highly realistic style. Was this a "master die" for the issue, based on an actual living Gallic captive as the model? Who was she? If one accepts Vercingetorix as the male captive on Caesar's & Saserna's denarii, could "Gallia" have been a member of his family?

English_Grenadier_1751.jpg
English grenadier of the 18th "Royal Irish" regiment of Foot, 1751The 18th was first raised in 1684, from independent garrison companies in Ireland, under the Earl of Granard and was known as Granard's Regiment of Foot. Granard's Regiment was placed on the English Establishment in 1689. The regiment saw action under King William III at the battle of the Boyne, and all throughout the Irish campaigns, including the fall of Limerick. Serving with the fleet as marines, the regiment received its first battle honor at Flanders, during the assault on the Castle of Namur on August 20, 1695. Having won the admiration of both King and Country, the regiment was designated the Royal Regiment of Ireland. During the War of Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the Royal Regiment of Ireland served with distinction at Schellenburg and Blenheim in 1704, Ramilies in 1706, Oudenarde and Lisle in 1708, Malplaquet and Tournay in 1709 and at Bouchain in 1711. In 1747, the regiment was ranked as the 18th Foot and became the 18th Regiment of Foot, or Royal Irish, in July of 1751. The regiment was disbanded after action around the globe in July 1922. Although the Bastille was stormed in 1789, the coinage of Louis XVI continued to be struck until 1792, with a new constitutional coinage in copper or bell-metal, silver and gold commencing in 1791. Thar coinage circulated alongside the ancien régime pieces, but did little to alleviate the shortage of specie. A short-term solution was attempted by the introduction of the assignats, which were paper money backed by confiscated church properties and land. Produced in vast quantities, the assignats eventually depreciated to the point of worthlessness. The tokens of Frères Monneron were issued in response to this situation.

The Monneron brothers, Jean-Louis (1742-1805), Pierre-Antoine (1747-1811), and Joseph-François-Augustin (1756-1824), were the sons of a Huguenot lawyer from Annonay, who made his fortune by buying the rights to receive the gabelle (salt tax) for the town of Annonay. By 1791, Joseph-François-Augustin obtained the right to strike copper token coinage. Production began in late 1791. However, in March 1792, Frères Monneron went bankrupt and Pierre-Antoine fled. His Francois-Augustin resumed the business, but a law of enacted on May 3, 1792 prohibited the manufacture of private coins. These currencies of necessity circulated only until the end of 1793.

The tokens were designed by the greatest engraver of the revolutionary era, Augustin Dupré (1748-1833), who had made his name as a medalist, producing many medals commemorating the American Revolution before becoming the Engraver General of the French mints in 1791.

GALLIENVS AVG / LAETITIA AVG AE/Bi antoninianus (260-268 A.D.)GALLIENVS AVG, radiate head right, one ribbon behind, one forward across shoulder / LAETITIA AVG, Laetitia standing left, holding wreath in right hand and anchor or rudder in left. No discernible field or mint marks.

AE3/4, 16mm, 1.15g, die axis 6 (coin alignment), material: bronze/copper-based alloy

AVG = Augustus, LAETITIA AVG = "the Joy of the Emperor", Laetitia was the goddess of joy, wreath = celebration, anchor = stability or rudder = guiding fortune.

Looking at WildWinds examples, it is similar to the different RIC 489 variations of the Mediolanum mint. The Laetitia reverse was also minted at other mints, but either during the joint reign (with AVGG, which might still be the case here ) or, at Rome, as a much larger and heavier coin (20-21mm, 3-5g). So this one is likely to be from Milan.

Gallienus (reign 253-, alone 260-268), see more info at http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-147472
